Y&R to air classic episodes
Taking bets that some of the Y&R (R) draw more viewers than DAYS when they air. LOL CBS erred not reairing at least one of those massively pre-empted episodes the next day to extend content. Probably going full repeats starting week of April 27 or May 4. Y&R will have been out of production for seven weeks (May 4) at that point. Between pre-emptions and inserting some repeats, I can't imagine they have more than that. It's unlikely they'll start filming again until early June, since the lock downs will likely continue until June 1. It would be great if it were possible for Y&R/B&B to re-edit a bunch of episodes to present one-week 'classic' story arcs. I'm sure it's difficult for rights issues. Editors can work remotely so I don't think it's much of an issue. That would actually make the episodes worth watching.

Edge of Night (EON) (No spoilers please)
EON late-afternoon slot made it very popular with men and I could've sworn I read at one point close to 50% of audience was men! I still don't get why CBS didn't move it back after the early slot was a clear killer. And a definite hard no on NBC at the time of the switch.

Edge of Night (EON) (No spoilers please)
@Broderick With spades with those actresses! SG became the 'star' of the show for good reason. It also helped that HS wrote Raven with traits, dialogue and drive normally associated with a man. But Sharon's inherent sultry sensuality was never compromised so she never came away as harsh or, using a very un-PC term, "butch.' Something that isn't easy to accomplish. Raven was easily one of the strongest women in the history of soaps. Even when she was down, she never felt like a victim because HS always had her forge her own path to the top.

Edge of Night (EON) (No spoilers please)
I stumbled on Edge during the middle of the Jeff Brown story and I was hooked - it aired AFTER Nightline where I lived at the time (St Louis). By then Elliot, Logan and Draper had already exited. It wasn't until I saw the videos of the pre-late 1981 episodes that I realized what a huge hole having those 3 leading men exit. Interestingly, they all played so well with SG. Of course, SG continued to drive the show because she had chemistry and presence to spare.

As The World Turns Discussion Thread
@Soapsuds The Kim/Sabrina scene was just as perfect as I remembered it! No dialogue. I'd forgotten about the quick cuts to the Mom/Child. Thank you for finding it for me! Separately, I'd forgotten that this was the end of the 'child' Emily. It was only when Melanie Smith was cast a few months later that it was believable that James would hook up with Emily. That 1987 cast was pretty darn solid (except for miscast Emily). @DramatistDreamerDarn Marie Masters really could kick butt! And she should've never lost her edge. I loved the way she could flew in the face of all things wholesome and Stewart! The Marland-era work really did stand out.

As The World Turns Discussion Thread
Does anyone know if the Kim/Sabrina meet/reunion is on YouTube? I couldn’t find it during on a regular search. Maybe it’s tied to a daily episode or a compilation of JM’s best moments? I just remember it was remarkably authentic - especially for a sorta retcon - though I seem to remember that they showed an old clip of Kim ‘losing’ her baby. I was never a KH fan, but I was stunned at how beautifully acted those scenes were. OC, as a huge JM fan, she made everything great so I’m automatically biased by her work! Any guidance would be helpful. And I hope I’m not ‘over’ remembering how good it was!

The Preemption/Out of Pattern Thread
@Franko Your mention of Tampa and B&B reminded me that B&B didn’t air in Seattle until 1995 when the CBS affiliate changed. Seattle tv was very weird when I lived there - MNF was taped delayed 1 hour to start at 7 Pacific because the geniuses thought people wanted to watch news first.

The Preemption/Out of Pattern Thread
@Franko LLB did a promo for KMOV that proclaimed that STL was the #1 market for Y&R. The move to 4 pm was in reaction to Oprah and the ratings for Y&R was quite huge. It lasted almost 30 years in the slot until a new company bought the affiliate and moved it. It's too bad because when I'd go back to visit my mom, it was always a good 'shared' experience at that time of day. Couple of odd STL tidbits I recall from growing up: 1) SFT didn't air on the CBS affiliate starting in 1980. It did, however, air for a few weeks when it moved to NBC, but was dropped fast. 2) EON aired AFTER midnight (or later) on the ABC sometime around 1981 - I know this because I got home one night and stumbled on it. It hadn't been on since 1977.

Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin indicted in bribery case
Good. I hope they do get jail time. Funny how these Hollywood elitists preach how regular people should live their lives - no school choice, socialized medicine, green energy, gated communities, armed security guards - and, yet, they don't follow any of those 'ideals.' Why on earth would these celebrities need to scam these universities? Didn't they have plenty of money to pay for tutors, personal coaches, etc. to give their kids even more advantages? C'mon. If their overprivileged children couldn't get into on their own merits and connections, they shouldn't be there in the first place!

Edge of Night (EON) (No spoilers please)
I'm behind here, but love the "Draper" name origin. It's funny, but I first saw Edge when the Sky/Jeff Brown story kicked in and I was hooked - it was on late night after Nightline and I happened to tune in. Once I had the opportunity to view the 1978-1980 episodes, I realized the show really got hit with the loss of Logan, Elliott, Draper and, even Steve - all were gone when I first started watching. And Raven sure managed hold her own against all of them.

Edge of Night (EON) (No spoilers please)
@j swift You're so right. I've always loved that scene. And what an exit: "so free with beautiful black wings," then out the door. Outstanding camera work keeping focus on SG during the whole speech until she grabs purse on her way out. In many ways, SG's Raven was written like a man - strong, sexual, scotch drinker, aggressive, determined, etc. You'd think 40 years later, soaps would be filled with women like that.

Edge of Night (EON) (No spoilers please)
Catherine Bruno just nailed that character and was so sad to see her go. The single episode where Nora gets it is one of the best post-Clown Puppet era. And Nora's speech in front of the camera. I'll never forget watching the video - I jumped out of my chair when it happened.

Why are soap fans so averse to online streaming?
Does anyone have real data on how many people are streaming the 4 US soaps? Since I cut the cord, I've streamed DAYS/Y&R. Years ago, I streamed B&B when I was traveling. I wouldn't be surprised if the numbers are pretty good - even if CBS.com is terrible platform. NBC's app is pretty good. Soaps L+Same Day ratings have not dropped nearly the same amount as prime time.

Like Original Steven, Cristal will be bandaged, in a coma and pregnant. Will emerge with recast in 2B.

Dynasty: Discussion Thread
@ChitHappens I don't think the Colbys are done for. I wish Jeff had been cast with RCR instead. I wouldn't be surprised if Dynasty 17 follows the original and recasts like a daytime soap. No primetime soap came close to the number of major recasts of Dynasty 81. One thing that makes this Dynasty work is the incredible diversity, yet the characters are not all about color/race - though they aren't afraid to address issues either. I hope they don't lose that. But the show does need to make some tweaks in Season 2. Also, Dominique is coming in Season 2. Oh, I wish Vanessa Williams was available instead of being tied to that False Profits series that is on hold. I see Jeff with Kirby, like original. I started watching once it got full season 1. It's definitely not nearly as horrible as people made it sound. Sure, it's campy (it's Dynasty!), but it does move fast, has some great one-liners and has EG and NS. And talk about scandal - making Jeff/Fallon related! Yikes. I'm really curious how it's doing internationally since it's exclusively distributed on Netflix during the regular season. CBS did say it made money for Day 1 because of that deal.

As The World Turns Discussion Thread
@Mitch I'm so glad someone else felt the same way about Luther's Corners/the farm house, etc. Tuscany, my a--. Did Marland ever visit that part of Illinois? The farm was a nice novelty for the first couple of years, but as all the children became successful, it was ludicrous. I like the idea of the 'rough side' of Oakdale. Even Monticello, of which Oakdale was treated as a suburb, had an urban downtown with questionable bars, seedy motels, the dance studio, etc. I remember when someone gifted Emma with a new refrigerator and for some reason a few weeks later, they tossed it and brought back that old icebox from the 1950s. For being such a 'great' cook, you'd think those kids (and Lily, Cal, Rosanna, etc.) would've gotten Emma the best appliances, etc. It still could've been an interesting set blending the old with the new. It's funny how everyone Emma ended raising/knowing somehow earned, married or had serious money - not a poor one in sight. Though Caleb as a cop was the closest, but even he was middle class and Julie was a model. It just seem ingenious after awhile.

Dynasty: Discussion Thread
They sure jammed a lot of stuff in the full episode of Alexis. I like that they didn't try to replicate the original Alexis. While NS seemed a bit off at the beginning, she was clearly starting to get her groove as the episode progressed. They're also making a good choice in shifting the rivalry to Alexis-Fallon. EG/NS certainly will be entertaining. I also liked that Alexis really does own Carrington Manor, but Fallon paid off the anesthesiologist to alter the times - and told Alexis to her face! While this Dynasty has it's flaws - it certainly has a lot of energy and is never boring. Like the original, I fully expect at least one or two characters to be recast - most likely one of the Colby kids.

Dark Shadows Discussion Thread
@Chris B I started watching on Amazon Prime around Xmas and I've watched almost 300 episodes in 2 months. I watched part of it on DVD years ago. It's perfect binge material. I have found it interesting how certain key actors were off-screen for several weeks at a time. As I rewatch DS & TEON, it's clear the worst thing to happen to soaps was the 1-hour format.

One big issue with soaps getting released on streaming or other services - the unfortunate use of pop songs starting in early 1980s - the licensing fees are very expensive especially compared to an individual episode's relative worth. I also don't think they are easily 'wiped' from audio tracks based on the way they were filmed and preserved back then. Wasn't this an issue with the DVD sets that were produced a few years ago? I've often wondered how Dark Shadows is doing on streaming services like Amazon (I've been watching) as well as The Doctors on RetroTv. With those soaps, it really helps that they are only 30 minutes - so they are easyier to watch, focus on fewer stories at a time, etc.

Edge of Night (EON) (No spoilers please)
I couldn't agree more about Raven during that era - she was written 'like a man' - aggressive, unapologetic and strong. I wish soaps wrote women more like that. Raven's exit was amazing and the name scene stands out as a highlight her run. BTW - Does anyone know why SG left the show at that point? Upon her return, she was clearly being punished by being left out of the new opening credits, which debut months after her return - despite being the main female protagonist. Obviously, that was more that made up in future openings.

Edge of Night (EON) (No spoilers please)
Even though she was crowned one of the first 'hair models in soaps,' LL was a huge find for EON. Jody was annoying character at times, but she kept the show young.

Search For Tomorrow Discussion Thread
I remember reading - back in the day - because SFT was not on in STL, where I lived at the time - that CBS decided they wanted to do something 'new' rather than give SFT, yet another facelift. The hype was that Capitol was going to be the "Dallas" of daytime - getting the primetime launch and opening credits that tried to minimic Dallas. I remember watching it and thinking this show is definitely NOT all that. It had it's moments, but knowing what I know now, CBS gave up a solid show that was pretty compatible with ATWT/GL. (Similar to the way they botch TEON, which was #2 until the timeslot change and then sent to ABC. CBS got nervous when ABC overtook it and lost sight of the fact that their solid line-up was its biggest asset, even though it was 'older.'

ALL: Soap Stars - Where are they now?
I just watched that episode on DVR the other night. SS does NOT age. He looked great and he's 66! A VERY under-appreciated actor. I never got how he didn't land as prime time series regular - particularly on a procedural.
