Y&R to air classic episodes
I always rooted for Jack, mostly because I think Eric Braeden is a bad actor (I've come to accept that the Newmans are largely mediocre acting wise) and there was Peter Bergman constantly giving 110%.

Peter Bergman was so handsome, his eyes are almost an unnatural blue. I totally get why there's such a divide between fans of his version and Terry Lester's (PB is definitely more matinee idol while TL's is more wily playboy). But I saw a LOT of Bergman's interpretation while watching the aftermath of John finding out about Jack and Jill's affair. That little boy who just wants his dad to forgive him is absolutely how PB's version would have reacted, he wears his heart on his sleeve 100% of the time compared to Lester's 60% of the time.

Fabulous scene. When exactly did Brenda Dickson start acting like a nutter? She's incredible here.

He looks like a 50-something year old white man who gets a lot of sun. Y'all are being extra.

Sharon Case, god love her, is still very stilted now. I find her to be a very self-conscious actress.

That was great! I think it's much better with fewer people. MEK, Cady and John all ended up tearing up recounting fan encounters and various soap memories. And MEK looks great! Better than he did at the end of AMC that's for sure. I liked when MEK said his favorite material wasn't the on-the-run stuff but the domestic work with Tad and Dixie raising Junior and Jamie while trying to keep their love alive.

Doug Davidson: Bill [Bell, Y&R’s co-creator, head writer, and senior executive producer] was a master at building to a climax like the honeymoon and from there it would break off into three or four different stories. Characters would go onto different rivers of their own. There wasn’t really a let down after a climax. It was like going to a different altitude. PRECISELY. That was the beauty of Y&R, when one story was crescendo-ing another was just revving up and another was barely off the ground. It was magic.

Lol I couldn't resist, I read that. Thanks. I saw what happened between them, apparently he'd been servicing her for some time until she got the divorce and came into some power with her settlement. Suddenly she rejected his advances and got him fired. He went to her room afterward and tried to reason with her, instead she called security. Jill was just being plain mean about the whole thing, I can't blame him. I will say it feels a little lazy to make him the culprit but that's to be expected of most shootings/murder mysteries on soaps. It's usually someone expendable.

Jill interviewing a parade of men while making sexual innuendos and then choosing the man who didn't put up with that BS was iconic. Iconic! Brenda Dickson is growing on me in these scenes, she's still a little awkward and arch but Jill is a fascinating character. The trauma from Phillip's death and Katherine's constant interference seem to dictate her every action. You can totally see the throughline in her characterization. When and why was David Kimble recast? I wonder if David turning evil was planned from the start.

I've been watching Y&R episodes from 85, the fallout from John finding out about Jill and Jack's night together. An episode of AMC from 85 was also posted in their thread today. And the production values are like night and day. Y&R looks and feels so lush, with the sweeping camera angles, the close-ups, the deliberated nuanced dialogue, whereas AMC (which is the soap I grew up on so it holds my heart) looks like an 80s sitcom. Y&R was just on another level, sure the show doesn't feel as homey or relatable or funny as other soaps of its day but it's not supposed to be. It's a novel for television, every moment has purpose. It's just so pretty.

I have questions...is Traci supposed to be a teenager here? She looks 30. Victor and Ashley are just openly having an affair? Kissing in the lab? Happily giggling? Was Ashley torn about this at all? Either of them? Who is Andy's girlfriend? Who is the bald black guy? 3 black guys on Y&R? And they're not related? They can barely handle 3 black people at a time now. I'm shook. I miss when Y&R had friend groups. Are there even friends on the show anymore? Maybe there are now, I haven't watched in some time. Kay was such a miserable old crone. It's a staple of daytime but the fact that she took time out of her day just to antagonize Jill makes her look so pathetic. She didn't even have an excuse, she just went there to spar, it's hilarious.

This masquerade episode is wild. Not a dud in the entire lineup of characters, classic characters all in the middle of classic storylines. Usually in an old episode you can say "oh who is that? Where'd they go?" but this is nothing but superstars. Speaking of...where was Nikki during this?
