Katherine Corning and Missy played a similar storyline to AMC's Myrtle Lum and Kitty. The plots were similar, but of course Katherine and Myrtle could not have been more different. It's interesting that Agnes Nixon chose to repeat on AMC, several characters and/or storylines she had earlier written on AW.

Just one more example of soap writers not talented enough to write for a good girl, because the bad girl is "just so much more exciting" (and easier to write for). Then they make the good girl go crazy, to force the audience to root for the bad girl. Suddenly the roles have been reversed -- the good girl is now the trouble maker, and the bad girl gets the man. Jeeze-Louise, I get so sick of this, and variations on this situation. I realize these "good girl goes crazy" plots are often popular with the audience, but it still shows a lack of writing talent and it's a hail-Mary pass when the writers don't know what to do with the good girl. Let's just make her crazy and write her off the show.

Edge of Night (EON) (No spoilers please)
Daytime Confidential has not reported Ann Flood's death. What the heck it up with that? Who is in charge at DC these days?

Flamingo Road
In Season Two, I thought they took the voodoo storyline too far -- beyond believable. And with the Season Two cliffhanger, how were they going to write themselves out of that?? It was just too supernatural to be explained away, and take the show back to believability. Just my opinion, of course.

Yes, that was the name. As I mentioned, I was told about a year ago, that he was the actor cast as Reginald who worked one day in the studio, then unexpectedly quit because he could not handle the pressure of daytime TV. I do not know if this information is true, but Pryce is the only name I have seen associated with this issue. This story (without naming the actor) is also told in John Considine's biography.

I asked a question about the first actor cast as Reginald, either here or on another platform a year or so ago. Someone supplied the name of an actor, but I've forgotten the name. He was a famous Broadway actor, and I believe was later criticized for playing an Asian character on Broadway, though he is Caucasian. Maybe that will ring a bell with someone. I would recognize the name, but it is not coming to mind right now.

If my memory is correct -- when Patti returned, she mentioned Sarah only one time, and mentioned Len only one time. She did not mention by name her other children. Does anyone remember if I am correct?

Love of Life Discussion Thread
Tess and Bill are considered by many to have been a super-couple. They were extremely popular during their run, and got lots of soap-opera press coverage. And Love of Life was very modern (certainly anything but old-fashioned) during their time on the show. They were likely the closest to a super-couple Love of Life ever had.

Interesting. So you think this board is a s h i t show, because several posters with decades of soap opera knowledge had the gall to suggest Colleen might be misinformed?? Do you know how many times over the past 20-years, we've heard rumors that P&G's entire soap opera archive had gone up in flames, been thrown in the dumpster, been dumped into the East River, or otherwise destroyed? And do you realize that none of those rumors have been true? Nobody's suggesting Colleen was lying or deliberately spreading false information. We are simply saying she was likely given faulty information. Plus, this is a discussion board, so guess what typically happens here -- discussion.

It is probably not P&G complaining to YouTube about copyright infringement. It is likely just some individual copyright nazi, who likes to see copyrighted material taken down. ANYONE can register a copyright infringement complaint with Youtube -- not just the copyright owner. And Youtube will remove the questionable material, no matter who makes the complaint.

Guiding Light Discussion Thread
I remember Bill Bauer's return from the dead was handled as believably as possible. And it included some realistic details. For example, Bert had to return the life insurance money she received when Bill was thought dead, and she was concerned about the financial difficulty that would cause for her. I've never seen details like that written as part of any other return from the dead plots.

Beginning around 1979, nearly all American soap operas stopped reusing videotapes and began keeping all episodes. There are exceptions, of course. P&G had kept nearly every episode of all their soaps from 1979 forward. Assuming Colleen's statement that all P&G episodes were recently wiped/erased is not true, then P&G still has those episodes in storage someplace.

I agree. "Wiping" tapes is synonymous with erasing tapes. P&G had tens of thousands of tapes. There is no way they would have gone to the expense of erasing all those episodes. So if P&G disposed of the tapes, they most certainly just threw them away. But truthfully, I do not believe they disposed of them. The archivists at P&G are obsessive (in a good way) about preserving the company's history. So they would fight hard to preserve the episodes, even if they had to do the work themselves in Cincinnati. I feel certain Coleen was misinformed. There was a rumor a few years ago, that all the tapes had been destroyed in a massive fire at a warehouse in NYC. That was completely untrue. My understanding is that P&G Productions still exists, but now they produce video material mostly for P&G's in-house needs. I believe Televest has ceased operations completely.

Right. Lemay was not a fan of Jordan Charney's acting choices. Perhaps a recast would have been a good idea, instead of writing off the character. Lemay enjoyed writing for working-class characters, and keeping Sam in town would have given Rachel another foil to bring her down-to-earth, as she became the wife of another millionaire. Also, since Sam was an attorney, Lemay could have written to Sam's internal conflict between his working-class roots and his upper middle-class income. Like so many of AW's earlier characters, there was still a lot of potential drama in Sam Lucas.

I've always been a little surprised that Harding Lemay did not choose to bring Janet Matthews back to the show. Janet seems like the kind of internally conflicted character Lemay would have enjoyed writing for. Plus, she could have provided motherly advice to Pat, Russ, and Alice after Mary Matthews died. And Janet most certainly would have had conflicts with her sister in law, Liz.

With all due respect, if I were in terrible pain and taking strong pain medication which makes me stupid, I would refrain from posting. It's that easy. All that aside, I am beyond tired of your rumor-based posts, which are minimally accurate at best. There are many actual experts on AW history online, so please check your facts before posting. My opinions only.

Denise Alexander should have played Missy Matthews, Liz's former daughter in-law. Missy's son, Ricky, could have come along with the package. That would have provided more meaty stuff for Liz to play (since Liz intensely disliked Missy, but loved Ricky). They could have paired Missy with both Jason Frame and Vince McKinnon -- two men Liz would never have approved of. And Ricky, just a bit older than Jamie, could have mixed with the younger crowd and found a woman equally distressing to Liz. Reginald Love was AW's version of Stefano Dimera, but without the European class. Reginald's moustache-twirling was literal. Poorly written and acted with campy humor. Reginald did not belong on a believable soap-opera like AW.

Soap Opera Mothers & Matriarchs
I agree that Doug Marland played Bob and Kim Hughes as the new more modern version of Chris and Nancy (patriarch and matriarch of the entire show). Even going so far as to host the annual Hughes 4th of July picnic, and raising the flag during Bob's (formerly Grandpa Hughes's and Chris's) speech. Bob and Kim slowly diminished as patriarch and matriarch of ATWT with later head writers, and especially after Bob and Kim's home completely stopped being used around 2000-01. You can't have a real patriarch/matriarch if they never have scenes in their home.
