  1. Someone was talking about this in the AW thread and it led me to learn that Allie has a son...so I guess there's that.
  2. I saw a tweet that, if this baby lives, it's the first black child born on the show since 1989 (Tommy Hardy). That's crazy, yet somehow not at all surprising.
  3. Thank you for sharing these passings with us that we'd never know of otherwise.
  4. She has an accent, it's just not as all-consuming as I'd expected. She, Lonnie Quinn, and Cady don't really have an Appalachian accent (is that the part of West Virginia Palmer was from - I can't remember), but that's probably too much work. I think Kari was just there through part of 1988. I wonder if they recast because she doesn't fit as the ingenue they molded Dixie into - she's made up like a discount Hee Haw Honey, and she reminds me of Sally Kirkland. I wonder when they decided to get rid of Lonnie Quinn. He's a bit ambitious but clearly not what they made Will under JPS. He seems more like the hot pieces of farm ass Marland collected at ATWT. (he would pop up on ATWT, but long after he'd retired from acting and moved into being a weatherman). That sad Skye/Tom bedroom scene led me to realize Richard Shoberg still had such a great body by this time. So many men on soaps, and in life, overdo the muscles and just look cartoonish - he has the perfect build. I can't remember - did viewers ever see Juanita Ramsey? Wasn't expecting to see her grandson. I guess that doesn't go anywhere. What did Erica fans think of this whole hostage story with Travis? I know some think it ruined his character.
  5. Good spot. I forgot he was on AMC near the end.
  6. That was also 15 years ago...
  7. I think that's always the crux with Gottlieb. She did brilliant work, and I don't think she was inherently dismissive of OLTL in the work she put across onscreen. Yet there was clearly something about her which alienated many in the industry, not just touchy actors or journalists, but also Erika Slezak. So the two co-exist. Her work still mostly holds up well and a good portion of what I personally may not care for I can at least say was well-produced. She's luckier than Lemay as most of his work is gone so we're left with fan memories, audios, a few episodes, and a dishy tell-all that makes him look petty.
  8. I think the writing for the triangle had issues beyond Clint's behavior - it was disrespectful to the Viki/Clint relationship and also very cheap to use homophobia (and the whole idea of "good" and "bad" homophobes) the way they did. There were ways to break Clint and Viki up which weren't taken, while still building up Viki and Sloan. I don't think Gottlieb was wrong if she had a low opinion of the few years of stories proceeding her taking over the show, but that interview where the composer seemed to have such a dismissive opinion of the Megan death story made me wonder if they just did not have much use for the soap format.
  9. @slick jones Not sure if this has anything you need or not, but it was a VintageNoSpintage upload that was blocked in the US but is now unblocked. There are AMC credit crawls at 20 minutes and an hour and 2 minutes and an hour and 18 minutes. I didn't realize they started Cliff/Nina this early, or this soon after Jesse's death. I have never watched Dixie #1 (Kari Gibson). She's not as "country" as I had expected - I was expecting someone from Dogpatch. That blonde is very garish though. Also wasn't expecting to see Cecily and a Speedo-clad Sean making out in the pool. Sometimes I forget how sexual soaps were then compared to now.
  10. I would say this would be a good chance to give Trina something interesting to do but that isn't happening.
  11. Interesting, as Christopher Stone was a few years younger. I always thought Robinson looked older than his age anyway. A few years later he'd be cast as Hunter Tylo's father on B&B (the only soap role I enjoyed him in).
  12. What "substantial" story did she give Ada? Buying into Mary's? @Soaplovers You make valid points. I think my biggest issue with her tenure is the grimy feel and the misogyny. And awful Reginald. Someone uploaded this because of the contrast between the music and the scenes, mainly one at around 48 seconds. It did make me laugh. I miss getting proper closing credits on TV shows.
  13. I guess this wasn't too far after that ill-fated story about Leslie's mother. Thanks @Paul Raven
  14. Thanks @slick jones I know that must have taken a lot of time.
  15. That was the vibe I got from that interview about the music in her OLTL run. Just some thinly veiled contempt.
  16. I haven't seen Jerry on Texas! but he has always seemed a little cold and manic to me, the opposite of Billy. I agree that I can't see Marland making the Billy I loved. Billy was a very layered character and that isn't something I can say about most of Marland's new characters - although I give Jordan a lot of the credit. If you ever want to see Jerry in a different setting, here's an infomercial he did with a L'Oreal lady.
  17. I suppose with Mike they would have kept going if James Kiberd had wanted to stay (I assume he wanted to leave), but they did fail Doug, not doing much with him even with two actors. Curtis and Rick...yes, so many missteps. Overall, given how unstable Loving was, I think they often did right by Trisha and Noelle Beck, probably more than just about any other character. Even with Stacey, I feel like they never entirely knew where to take her and Lauren Marie Taylor was the guiding force.

A lengthy piece on the show that I hadn't seen elsewhere. From a presentation at a convention. The photos are long gone but the writeup is still there, complete with some great quotes from Jeremy Sims. They give Sims a lot of credit for his work on the show and how he could play just about anything, which based on the glimpses I've seen, I'd tend to agree with. I didn't realize until recently that the whole thing had originally been filmed as a pilot several years earlier and then they recast multiple roles. I also didn't know the woman who came up with the show was the sister of the infamous Neighbours producer Susan Bower. https://jblum.livejournal.com/248295.html
  19. Nice that Greg is working on daytime again after DAYS kept writing him out.
  20. I agree that they really should play more of Liesl being bewildered and shaken by both her children returning. That could even play into the likelihood of Nathan not being Nathan, if she can "feel" something is wrong but doesn't trust her instincts anymore. Regarding Ronnie, if she does turn out to be a con artist, then her kissing up to Sonny would at least have a more believable edge to it. Now I'm imagining Niki Smith meeting Sonny - the horror...
  21. After I watched the Shana and Jim wedding I realized that was the happiest I've ever seen Shana. Susan Keith is a fascinating actress in that she always added a lot of neurosis to Shana even in happy moments, but she felt free here. It makes me all the sadder about what happened with Jim and their baby (although at least Shana was able to start over). I winced at the predictions of long lives for them. I wonder if the show had the wedding in "Italy" as a nod to their large Italian fanbase. That Cabot and Isabelle clip is one I watched a few times over because I haven't paid enough attention to that era to realize Isabelle thought so highly of Shana (especially given Shana's origins), and because in those few moments you get a good summary of why it was difficult for the show to recast Isabelle - Celeste Holm was a better actress, and Pat Barry a more spirited one, but Augusta really brings together a certain combination of dignity with a common touch, frailty with strength. This Jeff reminds me of an Elvis impersonator. I wonder if he was auditioned around the same time as Todd. Egypt questioning Trisha about her upbringing and then trapping "Clay" in the same questions was an interesting scene, and I appreciated getting to hear a little more about Trisha's upbringing. Randolph Mantooth and Linda Cook had a good antagonistic chemistry - I am never sure how it will shift when the show starts to make them lovers again before Mantooth leaves. I also appreciated getting to see such early Ava material for Lisa Peluso (Roya's final scene as Ava is also in there). I wonder how long the play up some of the naiver aspects of Ava under Lisa that Roya had. She plays those in a rawer way - the moment where she threw herself into the ocean and Alex thought she had killed herself was powerful, rough. The Rick and Stacey scenes annoy me because it's clear they never really wanted that relationship to be anything more than an obstacle - they have decent chemistry, Ron Nummi has a good body they're happy to show us, but the scenes are all about his insecurity and resentment, and repeatedly throwing JJ into scenes with them just so we will know they will never be. Not sure what to think of that filler-seeming song Jack is singing to that lady I don't know much about. Perry Stephens does have a lovely voice. I think I might have been more interested in seeing a real quad where Jack and Stacey and Rick and that woman became genuine couples and we would see all four struggling with jealousy and whether to be "good" or "bad," especially as Stacey was at one time the other woman with Jack before he cheated on her. I wonder if the pre-strike plans would have had Lily in this story or if they had already washed their hands of her and the strike was just dragging her along until she left.
  22. I do not like it. It's softcore material. It's also so generic. OLTL had many unique openings. Even their most generic openings up to that time felt special to the show. The second is actually my favorite OLTL opening, even though this video will blow out your eardrums:
  23. Thanks @Kane I was looking at a little of that earlier. I wish we had more strike material but I'm just glad for any new '80s Loving. I always associate Lisa with the "good" version of Alex so seeing her still with the more wicked Alex/Clay is interesting.
