AMC's New Look...

you rarely do see anything anyone describes in their posts, so this is not a shock.

I know what I'm talking about. Their FPS is far too low, and thats whats causing the shakiness. Videotape has more fps than film. But AMC is still being videotaped. Their conversion process needs improvment. If they are going to stick to this, I'm sure they'll get it right eventually.

No, as a former film student, I know all of this. I just said I pay more attention to the stories and not the process itself. (Well, not always.)

Well, I knew it wasn’t actual film. I just didn’t know how else to describe it – hence "film look". It looks like a marriage between videotape and film. I don’t know all the terminology.

I think most people understand what you're talking about. :)

They shot it on tape, then applied a digital filter in post-production to give it the look of having been shot on film. It's an interesting effect, but for an hour a day, five days a week? Hard to pull off.

And Drew's right about the FPS. The general feeling of shakiness is (likely) enhanced by the fact that there are too many frames missing between each frame that we see, enough that the ones we do see aren't successive images. I still think someone would benefit from a steadycam on a lot of the tracking shots, but the FPS is a bit part of it. Anytime you apply a digital effect, you lose a teensy bit of quality. When it's this big, it becomes really noticeable.

Still, I think it was cool for AMC to do during the ConFusion opening. It was fun and different, and it added a liveliness to the show for this big event. I'm just ready for regular multi-camera setups again now!

Um, no. Obviously, I do. I'm the film student, and even if I weren't, it's common sense that soaps are shot on tape and if something looks like it's shot on film but isn't, it has 'the film look.'

Well... excuse me, Mr. Film Student extraordinaire.

You all are too much comedy for me! I'm loving it!

Anyway, I think AMC looks better in "film look". It's different, it's a fresh approach which hasn't been used in years. They need to do something to step up their production values. This at least makes AMC unique out of the nine soaps... Aside from the atrocious attempts at writing McTavish is thrusting upon us.

I think I like the look for the same reason that you said, R Sinclair. Despite the sets, despite the props, the "film look" makes things look better, visually, for AMC. Hopefully they can resolve their jittery issues that come from this look -- and while they're at it, work on the sound too -- but I think it's a good thing.

I saw AMC today, the new look looks funny, amateurish

I agree, DaysPassions. Today I noticed the jitters. They need to work on the 'film look' a bit.
