ATWT Mike Learns About Jennifer

Yeah, I agree Mike/Katie could leave tomorrow and nothing would be affected. Unfortunately, you can say that about anyone on the show. Craig's leaving only had impact because of Johnny; as does Jen's. But look at Molly's, Dr. John's, Rosanna's or Dr. Ben's leaving....nothing really changed around Oakdale at all. Rose's death really didn't even affect anyone other than Lily and Holden, and she was a freakin' air-hog for years. It's not that the leavings don't affect story, it's that the writers just don't write the consequences for that story. At the time of Ro's death, Paul was deeply still in love with her, no matter how he denied it. He regretted not being able to tell her that. In this last year, he's had two other lovers since. Sure, it caused a two-week speed bump for him and Emily; but as of last week, he lumped her in with the either "dead or crazy" wreckage of his love life. And Carly hasn't dealt with it at all. Not in any obvious way at least. (I always blame her overreaction to Gwen on Rosanna's loss...) But just a couple of weeks ago, she said something about how she couldn't imagine Holden's feelings with Lily in a coma...it's like HUH???? HER sister's in a coma in Switzerland!!!!!!!

And bless your bravery on that "other" board. I've been there....it's not pretty. (And I'm convinced Mike's shooting blanks. LOL...*crosses fingers*)

Thanks for your input.

Yes, it is a battle at that *place* but I put on the full armor and go in and fight, almost on a daily basis, which is getting to be ridiculous

Mike and Katie are definitely two of the most useless characters on the show, Mike especially. At least Katie still has Margo, but when's the last time they interacted? There are probably newer viewers who have no idea that they're sisters. I'm sure that MC and TC are nice people, but if they both left ATWT, I wouldn't miss them. Actually, I'm surprised that they're still on the show. I know that a lot of people love the characters. I have no idea why though.

Someone pointed out on another board if you were to go back the three years that they have been together and totally erase it, it wouldn't shake the canvas of the show because they have been isolated for so long. Do you guys agree with that?

Definitely. Mike hasn't been needed since the whole triangle w/ Carly and Jack. And Katie is just about unnecessary. Lyla hasn't been on the show in years. Craig is gone. And Margo is only involved in Casey's storylines and then some stuff w/ the OPD. Also, Henry is pretty much out of Katie's orbit.

Their characters are too isolated from the rest. I know that this is a common problem on ATWT, where storylines never intersect one another; however, it's so blatantly obvious w/ Katie and Mike. They could go weeks, even months w/o conversing w/ other characters. The writers create entirely new characters to give them a storyline (ie. BJ and Nick), when it would be a lot more effective if they used current characters instead.

Okay, and if we're going to speak about other message boards, here's my problem: I can't even read other boards b/c the majority of the posters (I think we all know which one we're talking about here) are what I'd consider to be ATWT fan!@#$%^&*]es. It's scary that they exist, but they definitely do. They'll make threads saying something like, "So-and-so is the best couple on ATWT" and then people will either agree or people will disagree and say, "No, I like him w/ this girl instead..blah blah blah".

Also, a lot of them don't understand the history of the show. It's really unfortunate. There were actually people saying how they want Emily off the show. But did anyone bring up the fact that KMH has been on the show since 1992? It's not like the show can dispose of Emily like that. I understand that a lot of people hate the character (I'm one of those people), but I think time on the backburner would be the best thing, not firing an actress who's been on the show for almost 14 years.

Today is just what drives me nuts about the show. (Forget the fact I loathe Matie; this rant isn't about that...really) Mike and Katie learn of Jen's death. Do they take one second and reflect on the fact it was barely a year ago that they practically humped on Jen's baby's grave celebrating their love? Does Katie...HIS AUNT...ask about Johnny's welfare? Does she even know he was near death himself? Does Mike ask Nancy about how Jen's family is doing (since he might be tactful enough not to bother his ex-inlaws, although none of them seem to give a fig about him since the divorce anyway)?

NOPE...the only thought in their pretty little heads is getting Katie a new shiny rock for her finger and lamenting on how Simon ruined their honeymoon. And in this case, I don't really even blame them. It's the writers keeping everyone in their separate little story bubble.

And all it would have taken, at least for me to be satisifed, was at the most 3-4 lines of Mike reminiscing that he once almost spent his life with Jennifer and so on and so forth. I didn't need to see him cowering over her grave or even have a flashback. At least acknowledge that it was someone he was in love with before, not just a random passerby.

Yep...me too. Even his asking Carly how Parker was, would have shown me Mike was thinking outside his own world. (I believe Mike did say something about "the baby", who he apparantly doesn't even know the name of, even though JD is Katie's nephew. ) And it's just some throw away lines....like Babs mentioning talking to Frannie and Sabrina, Jen's aunts. I don't get why the writers don't do it. Surely someone mentioning they'd called Abi and Bonnie (who were Jen's friends in the recent past) wouldn't have confused too many new viewers.

I'm not against Emily being written off the show. I do think they've written her into a horrible corner, and KMH's isn't very good at playing sympathetic, at least to me. Sure, Em's got a wealth of connections on the show, but they don't play them up. I've heard exactly two veiled references to Em and Meg's volitile past. Otherwise, Meg treats Em like Little Mary Sunshine who temporarily went nuts.

The "fan!@#$%^&*]es" went and created the drama over at the other board. One specific group chased almost everyone away, and complain when "there's nothing going on there" on the general board. Then they moan because "character X" is "being picked on". Is it any wonder, when they spent months belittling other fans? The chickens came home to roost; and they only have themselves to blame.

Wow, they have a name  ! I like that. But yeah, they did get a bit ridiculous and the only time they come out to play (so to speak) when such character/couple is being critized (sp?) and it is not needed. It just p*sses people off and causes trouble. Sorry, but everyone character gets bashed, that is how it is. I could easily go over there and say that it is "unfair" that people are still talking horrible about Jennifer seeing that she is dead and blah, blah, blah but I'm not going to do that because there is just not enough time in the day and it is just not that serious.

Everyone is going to have different characters that they like and dislike. I'm sure that if we all named our favorite and least-favorite characters, we'd all come up w/ a lot of different characters.

Then of course there are the people over there that said that Jen deserved to die in order for Dusty and Lucy to reunite, which is utter filth. I hope that the writers never pair Dusty and Lucy back together just to piss those !@#$%^&*]es off. It bugs me b/c, obviously, they've only seen the coupling when the old Lucy was on the show, so who's to say that the new Lucy will have chemistry with Dusty? Whenever I read that board, it makes me want to defend Dusty and Jen, which is saying a lot b/c I never liked them togther.

The problem is that fangirls alienate other fans of the show. That's what happened w/ all of the CarJack fans a few years ago. I kept getting !@#$%^&*]ed out b/c I didn't happen to like them, so automatically it made me hate the couple. Eventually, my feelings for them just became neutral, but still...the world doesn't revolve around them, just as much as it doesn't revolve around any other couple. When the fangirls complain about their couple not getting enough airtime, I just want to say, "Listen, other characters deserve airtime too! Not all of us like the same character!" But then they'll !@#$%^&*] to the show, and the show responds by pimping these couples out, further alienating the other fans. It's just a vicious cycle.

W/ Emily, I would see a write-off as being a cop out from the writers. They should have Emily lose custody of the baby and then send her on the backburner. I really don't know what else they can do. She's always been a character that is borderline bad girl/pathetic, and I think the writers took her too far this time around. I think the biggest problem is that she's been over-exposed, and I agree, that I have an awfully hard time feeling sympathy for the character. She's done such awful things in the past, and even in that brief time when she was "normal", it felt like she was such a fraud. The character has been on for ages, but she hasn't developed at all. It's like she's been stuck in neutral all this time.

What she's doing to Paul is pretty much the same thing that she did to Tom when she got pregnant w/ Daniel: she uses her baby to get what she wants. She obsessed w/ Tom, trying to get him to fall in love w/ her and marry her, when she had to have known that he would never leave Margo for her. It's the same exact thing w/ Paul. All of this is to reunite w/ him.

I feel like what's happened to Emily will happen to Katie. Katie's development has plateaued for years now w/ no sign of improvement. She'll be on the show for years and years until it becomes almost impossible to get rid of the character.

I could agree that an immediate write-off of Emily could be a cop-out, but then again, she's been looney for the past six-and-a-half months. The cop-out is her getting out an out of jail free card. This three month stint in Looneytoonville isn't redemptive. I don't see why they couldn't just leave her in jail for like a year.

Re: Katie....I don't think it would ever be impossible to right her out. She should seem like an intergral part of Oakdale, but she never has.

And if TIIC think LustyII is gonna fly, they're nuts. Spencer Grammer seems even younger than Peyton List.

A part of me doesn't want to see KMH get canned b/c the writers messed up, and I don't blame her for not saying anything about the direction of her character. After years of being on the backburner, I'm sure she was just happy to be getting a storyline.

But a part of me doesn't know how they're going to be able to save Emily's character. The writers seem to be nuts about her (no pun intended) and are willing to let her off the hook for what's she's done, but the viewers aren't that stupid. I know that there are a lot of fans who will love her no matter what, but the majority of viewers aren't going to buy her being "redeemed". TIIC said that she was going to suffer for her crimes, but I have yet to see that.

And Katie should leave now. The writers could make her character better, but as long as they keep her w/ Mike, I highly doubt it. She and Mike should leave town and never return.

If TIIC are sick enough to hint at a Damian/Lucy pairing, I'm sure that they're more than willing to do a Dusty/Lucy redux.

You picked up on the yuckky Damian/Lucy vibe too? I keep hoping Meg gets disillusioned enough with Paul to head back in Dusty's direction. Dusty needs a woman, not a little girl playing doctor.

I had no problem with Mike and Katie's reaction, i thought it appropriate, she were shocked and saddened, Mike clearly showed that in his face

Everyon deals with grief diffrently, with Mike it seemed to make him want to hold onto Katie tighter and not waste one moment of life.

When Mike was arrested for maya's murder, it made the front page of the paper if I recall, did Jenifer go see Mike to offer her support? When Nick died did Jen go see Mike.

As for the fan!@#$%^&*]es comment, CarJack fans are the last [!@#$%^&*] fanbase to point fingers at anyone.

I'm very easily able to let Emily off scott free since I despise Paul and how he weaseled his way into her life. Yes, she returned that affection for a while too, but I'm all for anything that pisses Paul off. So Emily back in society, not allowing Paul to raise their kid together with Meg makes me smile. And laugh. And cackle with glee!

I know Emily's masterminded a lot of outlandish stunts over the past several months but if I'm able to forgive Carly and all her wacky schemes, this is nothing! Plus, watching Dusty chained up like the dog he is, well that was priceless!

ITA about Emily being in a corner, but so have Babs, Carly, Craig (except he got caught last time) and Paul. All have committed major crimes only to be let off the hook. I would like to see them grow the Emily character more -- she has had a tortured history from childhood to teen lover of James to being raped by Diego, etc. Now have her learn that she has to accept that those things happened to her and that it's time for her to be a responsible mother and refocus on her career. Plus, MM is the best tough-love mom out there!

Great post, agree with every word! Mike & Katie make me sick
