I don't think Gottlieb was out to punish Clint. I just think she had a somewhat narrow vision of who the character was during that story. And to be fair, a good portion of the last decade under Rauch had been spent valorizing the cowboy Buchanans as the epitome of manhood, sex appeal, truth, justice and the American way. While other pre-Dallas examples of more nuanced or imperfect men and women were slowly weeded out of OLTL. Over time it became mostly Viki, Tina, the Buchanans (often talking down to Viki and especially Tina), their women, and some rotating foils, villains and bimbos. Okay, that's reductive but it's also not entirely untrue.
I have a lot of love for the Bukes for who they are. But their dominating the show was something Malone was right to challenge. I didn't hate them being humbled, but I do think Clint and Viki should've reunited down the road as was the original plan. And I do think the handling of Clint in the material I've seen thus far from the Billy Douglas story, etc. could've been better. But he also got some beautiful stuff in those years, before and after.
