As someone who isn't a fan of flashback episodes that are standalone I really didn't mind this one or find it boring.

I enjoyed today's episode and would take this over Joey/Vanessa, Samantha/Tyrell, Nicole/Carlton any day. People have been saying this show has been all talk and not showing anything. Today they showed some of how Naomi and Jacob met. I thought it was well done. Just because you may not enjoy the characters in the episode, doesn't mean it's a bad episode. It's just not your thing, and that is fine.

I think I've said before I feel killing off Jacob would be a big mistake. The Hawthornes should be a prominent family on the show and why would it make sense to kill off Jacob? To what? Bring in Luke to take his place? Personally, I wouldn't see the point. Now, Jacob being severely injured while undercover would be good story. Maybe make him question still being a cop. Naomi pushing him to stop. His father (and family) pushing him to stay in. Jacob soul-searching to decide what to do.

I did expect the Elon and Izaiah dust up at the wedding to be a bit more after the way it has been talked about.

Thank you for this. Although, I don't agree with everything, nice perspective.

That was the big fail in the episode.

Izaiah wore sneakers? Are you kidding me with this? He didn't fit in? We needed something much more dramatic and big to make this father-son rift believable.

It's not.

My autistic mind goes into analytical mode and that proves that Monday's episode was a good one because it was rife full of things to analyze.

Darlene Hawthorne: I like her vibe and I think her character is someone that is needed to enrich the show. She came from the south, lived in a working class/middle class family, didn't go to college, and managed to find love, purpose, and a career without a college degree. It also was refreshing that she wasn't kissing the ground the Dupree's walk on and we need more characters that aren't SPS to fill that position. Curious to see more of her.

Naomi's 'Best Friend': It's interesting that Naomi choose to use the words 'best friend' when it came to Hayley even though all the flashbacks had Ashley in them. Ashley was the one to encourage Naomi to call Jacob, came over to lend them something when they moved into their apartment, and was helping with the proposal/engagement situation... yet Hayley is her best friend? I want the show to explore that because I would assume Ashley's her best friend over Hayley... and maybe have a flashback or two of Hayley/Naomi pre-husband stealing to show their rapport when they were friends.

Elon/Iziaiah: That disagreement between them at Jacob's wedding wasn't a huge blow up though you could tell Jacob looked worried/concerned so I'm hoping that this choice of scene means we'll be getting some detail on their estrangement and why Iziaiah turned to a 'life of crime' and why he opted to go to Joey Armstrong over his own father/mother/brothers.

I'm really hoping this episode isn't a foreshadowing of Jacob dying, and just as we finally meet Darlene. I want to see the family dynamics at a family dinner with Naomi and Eva in attendance.. and see their interplay as well/

I might be alone in this but I also think the actor that plays Izaiah has improved tremendously since his first day and this was his best episode.

I like him and I though he was good in that scene. That was definitely from the Black family perspective which some won't ever get.

Lami is a decent actor (no one to write home about); however, his bobblehead movements have yet to stop since day one, and that's my main problem with him.

960px-Beyond_the_Gates_%282025_logo%29.s

original release date: Tuesday, April 7, 2026 | writers: Jamey Giddens, Judy Tate | director: Sonia Blangiardo-Goins

Thoughts:

  • I know that Anita is likely joking about writing a novel, but I do think given all she has gone through, it could be a good idea to get some of her creativity out.

  • Ooh-la la, look at Bradley flirting with his husband. And yes! The chemistry is alive and despite all that happened last year, I am truly happy for them right now.

  • I like the friendship (and friendship only) between Donnell and Samantha; it is nice to see him so supportive of her with the upcoming cotillion. And Donnell's breakfast sounds delicious.

  • Given how Darlene reacted to Naomi in the beginning, who knows how she will continue to be with Eva. I am hoping that it works out well, but it could blow up in the end.

  • It is so nice to see that Anita's spark is coming back after the infection that had her giving up.

  • Damn. Not the afternoon delight being postponed! That was the perfect time, despite Jacob waiting and Vernon's impending arrival. A quickie would have sufficed, no?

  • Vernon calling Dani a snitch was hilarious. They definitely have that father-daughter relationship down pat.

  • What is going on with June? She is acting quite peculiar with Donnell and Samantha right now.

  • Damn. Looks like the Rashad persona is beginning to rub off on Jacob, and that is not a positive thing.

  • DAMN! Darlene does not mince her words or hold her tongue. And look out, here comes Dana. This is about to get very, very interesting. Tea Period GIF And just as I suspected... this is going to be a hilarious mess. Darlene's facial reactions and body language towards Dana are telling.

  • Martin's embarassment at discussing his sex life with Vernon is beyond grounding, and I love how candid Vernon is willing to be with him, too.

  • Good on Donnell for encouraging Samantha to excel in areas she is comfortable with and that will set her apart from everyone else at the cotillion.

  • Dani's self-doubts about her return to the modeling industry feel rooted in realness, and her concerns about it make sense. And I feel like models have the same kind of feelings.

  • My heart is broken for Eva. She was genuinely trying to impress Darlene and be liked by her, and Dana came in like her usual self, destroyed any chance of that, and is now going for a cocktail and a spa treatment? She should have just kept her trap shut.

  • Martin talking about increasing security surrounding his campaign worries me that something is going to happen. First Bradley's involvement with the plasma ring, and now this political campaign! This is not going to end well for the Richardson Smith family.

  • Damn. Darlene has some strong feelings and while I may not agree, I do know she is entitled to have them. Wow. And poor Eva having to overhear her warning Izaiah. That cannot feel good at all.

Notes:

  • Writer2 was not needed today. Huge downgrade.

  • Monique Mosee (Darlene) is quite the find. She works so well in the role and is definitely the anti-Anita. Welcome aboard!

Leslie: "She better be glad my biking days are over..." 😂 I know many are getting tired of Leslie, but I still love her. Those scenes today were good.

I still love her as well. Trisha has chemistry with the whole cast

This is the drama I wanted for Eva and Izaiah.

Eva is gonna have to come to some real truths if she wants to have any kind of life in FC. Let's see if they'll have her do it.

Eva and Izaiah need to keep far away from their parents because they are all incredibly toxic in their own ways (save for Ted who is pretty calm).
