To me that's always what they have been. I figured that was part of the charm to people who enjoy them. They could have just had the legendary Rosalind Cash onstage but instead they have Lucky and Luke (and Justus) in the background to give us some heartwarming comedy as the Pips.

I think the Nurses' Ball should just have been left to those first few years, to be honest (any time before we got year after year of Ned "rocking out" and the year of a sex tape being played), but I do know many people love them. My main issue is they often just seem a little too glossy since coming back thanks to the HD format. I was watching the Spinelli performance on Youtube and it is clearly meant to be charming, silly fun, which it is, but it's more suited to the cheap seats era of the Ball where you had someone literally hanging from the rafters, not today's slickness.

Ranger, will you be his champion?! Tell Dante to back the he&l off? Be there for him in the coming days when he is going to be furious & possibly turn his back on the Cerullos & the Qs & show up at Sonny's door looking for a new place to park his weary head?

As for me, I watched the NB every year even when I wasn't watching GH. Many years have been disappointing. So far this year is amazingly satisfying. Clothes! Performers! Drama!  So ironic that they actually have Cam doing what we always said he should be doing, emcee, tux, mic, huge toothy grin! Snark! Could they possibly throw any more shade? Nooo! This is like 100% attitude coming from all directions. You could say I died & went to heaven. Gimme all this high school talent show soapy goodness, I mean, it's only 4 days, what kind of wimp are you, anyway? As soap fans, we are supposed to enjoy these occasional flights of fancy. Maybe you aren't, but I sure as he&l am! And, I won't let any Debbie Downers ruin it for me, either. This brief early morning message was brought to you by the letter N for what else Nurses Ball.

Edit to add: Didn't we see Sawandi really dancing in a preview?!!! And, as a Kristina lover, I think we are def headed to either Ferncliff or some other similar facility. Meanwhile Mansi & NLG their scenes yesterday AMAZING, that's acting.

The point being that y'all Kristina haters are gonna get your way.

per the description on the official GH youtube account, from the clip posted above:
the character Gio was performing "Glow", an original piece that the actor Giovanni Mazza co-wrote and released when he was only 12 years old.

Honestly, Gio's performance was probably one of the best Nurse's Ball performances ever.  It shows how contrived and silly every other act was.  90's Nurse's Balls had their silliness too, but it tended to be with characters we cared about-not two nurses that get trotted out 3 times a year lol.  There was also some genuine singing talent happening with Vanita Harbour, Rosalind Cash, and even Ricky Martin.  I don't think anyone on the current cast has that high quality of a singing voice.  I suppose Ned can go rock out again lol.

The other issue with the Nurses Ball is that the cause isn't very relevant.   Obviously, it's amazing how far we have come with HIV/AIDS treatment, but without Robin, Stone, Jon Hanley, the Quilt, etc. it's hard to feel like the cause is close to anyone's heart except for a few people that were near and dear to Stone/Robin.

The Nurses' Ball has always been cringey, fast forward material for me, but especially during the Frank era. The musical numbers and audience reactions are unwatchable.

So many of the conflicts on this show feel phony and manufactured. Probably no better instance is the Gio - Dante crap. Gio's whole story is inorganic, plot driven, no stakes, fake conflict; giving people lame drama just to give them drama, a prime example of GH under Frank.

    • This, plus they nixed their overnight set crew during the COVID era and never brought them back.

    • I did some research because I had a similar question.  A Reddit user who works at TeleVision City (where Y&R is filmed) estimated it takes 45 minutes to set up or reconstruct an already built set.  However, according to union rules, it takes at least seven crew members (not counting lighting and sound installation).  As always, the real cost is the labor, not the task.   Y&R uses robotic cameras, so there is only a skeleton crew on set.  Most of their crew budget goes to production assistants, who cannot move sets.  So, they would need to hire a crew every time they wanted to put up or take down a set (for two days) as well as a lighting and sound design installation.  Which is obviously very different from how production worked when money was more freely spent (and good for the unions for keeping the workplace safe). So, filming a single day in Lauren and Michael's living room could cost as much as they spend on two actors salaries for an entire year.
    • I knew Giovanni Mazza was talented but damn that kid is a star in the making.

    • What is the reason why soaps can’t use whatever sets they want? How exactly does it cost money..? I’m sure they still have Michael and Lauren’s house, why can’t they just put it up and shoot it when needed lol
    • I'm binging last week and I still find it so odd how different the show feels. Before I felt like each episode felt so long but the show is gliding by now. I'm on Thursday and it's crazy how real the characters feel. It doesn't feel like Days of Our Lives because I'm so used to everything being slapstick. It's definitely nice seeing layers to the characters now. I'm beginning to feel really confident about the coming months when the new headwriters can introduce their own stories.
    • And, Dani's focus, whoa, when she deigns to really pay attention, her focus is laser sharp. And, Chelsea is a natural attention seeking target for Dani. She is so much more mother than I realized before.

    • I did enjoy the Dani/Chelsea scene! It’s nice to see Dani show a little more nuance, and I agree I do buy her and Chelsea as mother/daugher.
