Rosanne/TheConnors - show about working class family stuff, where the struggle to pay the bills and just function is a major part of the show
(ignoring the weird lottery-win era)
but the storylines are about family emotional stuff, but against a background of being interrupted by financial stress and exhaustion from working at hard jobs.

Beyond The Gates is about family emotional stuff, but against a background of every day being filled with champagne and caviar parties.

It was stated before the show even debuted that this show is "not your grandmother's soap opera". There have been a number of events but they do give the opportunity for more character relationships and interactions to develop.

Can you scream this to the folks in the nosebleeds?

It's amazing to me how some people want the same old soap tropes over and over.

I concede there are some technical aspects of the show than can be improved, but we're only three months in and they taped a few months ahead (which I don't think is a good idea) so I'm sure they're looking at what's working and what's not and they will correct it.

But we are still getting the same soap tropes.

Do you feel that tho? Aside from a solid black cast, there's not much about this soap that I can truly say is cutting edge storywise. The storylines are pretty tame and on brand for soaps for the past 20+ years. There's a gay couple, but they're so vanilla and heteronormative and the hint of Chelsea getting down with couples hadn't really developed into much yet.

Exactly my thoughts. We have been swimming in cliches.

I'm committed because I want this to work and yes I know that this is a brand new project and it will have its hiccups. But on that same note, it is a new project but following the same old script. I feel like the storylines needed to be new, fresh, exciting but keep the core elements of soaps like the melodrama, the long looks and pause to a cut, the families, etc.

I really hopes sweeps turns this around.

Mm-hmm; I absolutely agree, and people [from my POV] are trying too hard make this "your grandmother's soap" and it is infuriating.

I was talking about how many events/parties the show has had in comparison to other soaps and the overall comparisons to the other soaps. The parties and events are a cultural element that are going to be a theme.

The biggest difference between this and the other soaps for me is that the characters seem to have more vitality. At the same time I think it emulates traditional soap story telling in how the character conversations are more than filler and contribute to overall development.

I completely agree.

On that note, I hope we get some "Silkpress" today with her plots and plans.

The events themselves don't bother me. I enjoy having large number of the cast interacting within a scene. However, I think they could have utilized these group scenes better in that they didn't do much to advance story.
