Credit to @te. for posting this in the BTG chain.

From The Hollywood Reporter:

TV Ratings: ‘Beyond the Gates’ Has Promising Start for CBS (Exclusive)

I think this part is key as the show was developed with Black viewers in mind so the demographics they’re looking at might be very different from the other soaps:

“More than half of the Beyond the Gates audience — 55 percent — for its premiere week was made up of Black viewers. That compares to 30 percent for CBS’ The Bold and the Beautiful, 29 percent for The Young and the Restless and 22 percent for General Hospital.”

And they (people) once said that soaps were over. Hehhehehe.

True that! The good news is that we now have some streaming stats on Y&R + B&B

It appears Y&R gets 300K+ from streaming. It's been a long time since we've seen total viewer numbers and not sure if those were L+SD or L+3/+7.

It does show that there is interest since streaming is proactive viewing. Anecdotally we knew that from DAYS/GH.

This is great news for the soap industry. Let's hope BTG can keep it going. I'd love nothing more than a soap renaissance!

I agree.  They're not sustainable economically, and they're not exactly luring in audiences either, no matter HOW many big names they attach to these projects.

I did some digging with primetime and cable ratings and I saw a report from January-April of last year and saw that Y&R made the list with 16 billion minutes viewed during that time frame. Shogun, a show that was budgeted at $250 million dollars and got endless promotion managed 4.93 billion minutes viewed during the same time frame. Y&R's budget is probably $30-40 million and they're getting so much more value out of it.

I feel like it's kinda like the old days when daytime paid for primetime. Obviously not to the extent that they did in the past but I feel like each soap is more valuable to their networks than we think. It's just a matter of the people in charge being willing to accept that and value what they bring which I hope BTG will challenge them to do.

I still can't believe FX spent so much money on a series that is so dull.  I don't care that it's more respectful to the James Clavell novel than the original miniseries was, or to Asian culture in general.  None of that means anything if your audience is bored.

People always want to blame the shrinking across-the-board ratings on how much the Internet has changed our viewing habits and so forth.  Frankly, I think that's bullshit.  I think any show could pull down DALLAS-like numbers even today, it's just a matter of telling stories that people want to see and leaving the people who tell those stories the hell alone.

Does Y&R need a lot of sets to tell good stories, though?  Does ANY show need a lot of sets to tell good stories?

Honestly, I'd be okay with Y&R having a DAYS-like budget if the trade-off was having a halfway interesting show for a change.

It's something I've thought about a lot. Yeah, I get what you're saying. You can tell good stories at a kitchen table. Bill Bell could do that. I'm liking the Amy/Damian storyline right now and that doesn't involve more than two sets. OTOH the show is severely limited in storyline choice when they don't have basics like a large hospital set and a police station. Everything becomes a throwaway line at the coffeehouse. Even with the fetish for "business stories" they don't even have offices! It's just beyond parody. A show is firing on all cylinders when it's making a best effort at everything... writing, acting, directing, sets, wardrobe, lighting, music, etc. That's what BTG is trying to do (granted some growing pains in some of these areas).

    • One thing I thought about is if Hayley will have a reaction to Bill threatening to kidnap and sell a baby. That's another level of viciousness and with her just having thought she was pregnant it might make her feel some type of way.
    • You're welcome. Fall 1982-Spring 1985 was the peak of primetime soaps. What a time to have been alive.
    • 1990/91 Cheers, Roseanne, A Different World, The Cosby Show, Empty Nest, The Golden Girls were still Top 10 shows, and Murphy Brown and Designing Women became Top 10 shows. It was the following season that I think was the transition season for sitcoms.
    • @xtr I loved Martin in Thursday's episode, he was almost a different character. I thought he was flirty, funny, carefree, and giggly. Glad I have someone to share my top 2 women(Nicole and Eva) with, I agree Nicole is the heart of the Dupree family, and also the heart of the show IMO. We rode into the show on the passenger side of her car, lol. What I am enjoying the most about the show, is that they did such a great job character building, because all I care about is the CHARACTER journey. Nicole, Eva, Leslie, Dani, Chelsea, etc. very invested in what's coming next. I even feel that way about Mona, Shanice, and Doug.
    • I know we have discussed the fact that Another World seemed to be planning a location shoot in Finland that got cancelled. I came across this item from the syndicated Soapbox column published June 14, 1982. "Soap operas have been experimenting extensively with on-location shooting in recent years to enhance storylines and increase their viewing audience. A major drawback is the added production costs involved. Another World, for example, cancelled a special trip for Victoria Wyndham (Rachel Cory on the show), who was scheduled to shoot scenes in Finland. The producers felt that the high price tag, along with resentment of the cast members who also wanted to travel but were to be left behind. was enough to scrap the whole project."
    • A few more thoughts about these last two episodes. I thought it was interesting how much disdain both Dani/Anita have for Eva. I thought it was amusing how Dani was calling her lying/conniving and how Anita pointed as if to say, "that part". They definitely are not here for her, and I could see them having harsh confrontations with her in addition to Leslie. I'm curious to see Kat's interaction with Eva on Monday's episode. I think it might be interesting if Kat (along with possibly Naomi/Chelsea) come around to Eva before Dani/Anita do. Of course, Kat will be understandably angry at her. But maybe a tiny part of her might feel sorry for her if she really does believe that she's Ted's daughter as well and that Leslie lied to her. I could see Kat confronting Eva again and warning her not to harm her family anymore. But I could also possibly see Kat admitting that what Ted/Leslie did regarding her was messed up as well. And maybe that will pave the way down the line for them to get along better. I also agree with the comments/speculation made in the threat that Nicole will eventually accept/probably love her someday as well. I still wouldn't mind if somehow Nicole ended up being her biological mother. They have both been acting like they care for each other in this storyline. Nicole somehow ending up being her mother would be soapy and provide some more interesting layers in this story. And regarding Andre/Dani's romance it seems like they are genuinely developing feelings for each other. I have missed episodes, so maybe more of this has been elaborated on. But it seemed like there was genuine affection between both of them when they snuck a kiss publicly in the hotel. And also, them both talking about going publicly with their relationship. I wonder what everyone's reactions will be should they be caught by someone together. Of if they flat out tell everyone about their relationship.
    • I was wondering what week it was, and it explains the low rating for Knots Landing. I was also wondering what preempted Dallas and Falcon Crest.
    • Interesting take on Dallas. Frankly I think the plot of JR Returns should have been the way Dallas ended but for whatever reason they thought they had the chance to get renewed for another season lol. A week later Knots’ 2 hour season finale ranked at #10 against Cheers #3 and LA Law at #5. There’s only a handful of other shows running that long and still doing well enough the ratings/rankings i.e. Gunsmoke, Law & Order, NCIS, Grey’s Anatomy and more recently Blue Bloods.    Another point of interest is the unraveling of the 80’s sitcoms had already begun in the spring of ‘91. The first part of a Who’s The Boss? two part season finale we see here ranked at  #40 and second part ranked at #43 the following week. Growing Pains finale the previous week barely made it into the Top 30. The Wonder Years fared no better. Cosby losing ground, Night Court and Dear John just being there etc.
    • I'm glad a lot of people are continuing to enjoy this show.

I haven't posted in a few weeks and have some catching up to do. But I did manage to look at the last two episodes after hearing about how good they were. I really enjoyed them. My thoughts on them: The affair/secret child reveal was very good. TMG was really good as Leslie, her whole confrontation with Ted/revealing all to the Duprees was very entertaining. I continue to love AM/Eva. She my top two favorites on the show (along with Nicole). I have a lot of sympathy for Eva and how she was conflicted/ultimately felt guilty about publicly revealing the truth to everyone. I wonder what will happen to her next, especially if she does go and live with the Doctor that is friends with Ted and Nicole. I lol'ed at how Martin/Smitty jumped up and grabbed Leslie when Eva was calling her crazy. The way they did that was funny to me. I haven't liked many of Martin's actions/his attitude especially regarding Smitty/his children, but I think it was interesting how he wanted to check Ted for his actions. And also wanted Bill to be questioned/confronted about his as well. I haven't been the biggest fan of the character of Andre, but I appreciated his calm and measured approach after the reveal and how he talked with Eva. I thought it was interesting that he knew about the affair and convinced Ted not to tell Nicole. Speaking of Nicole, I continue to love her character and view her as the heart of this show/Dupree family. I am interested in seeing where her journey goes as a character after this reveal. I'm looking forward to her leaning on Dani and (also Anita/Vernon, etc...) for a change.
