Tanisha Harper and Tabyana Ali have now been on the show for three years. I guess the show is keeping them both on contract. Meanwhile, TJ has not been seen or spoken of for three months. His mother and his ex were both on Thursday and neither one mentioned him, as if he never was.

On the one hand, we have a brand new soap (BTG) with a cast that is primarily African-American...and on the other hand, we have the oldest soap still on the air (GH) practically wishing its' token African-American characters into the cornfield.  That, ladies and gentlemen, is the state of ethnic and racial minorities in daytime today.

SMH! I haven't watched Y&R so I can't speak to how prominent they are making their black characters. At the very least the bold and the beautiful is prominently featuring some Asian cast members, with an Asian villain.

I'm also appalled by GH's indifference to its long-running black characters, like TJ, who's been on the show for 13 years and has been in a relationship with Molly for most of that time, but who never seems to be mentioned by Molly or her relatives or even his own relatives. But to be honest, aside from Trina, I can't think of many black characters on GH I'd actually miss if they disappeared tomorrow. I don't actually miss seeing TJ onscreen, just like I don't miss seeing Michael onscreen; but Michael gets mentioned several times a week, whereas TJ is never mentioned onscreen.

I think the key word is "token". I'm not sure how many African-American writers are on the GH staff, but it certainly feels like no one behind the scenes is really invested in these characters. I get the sense that the writers are afraid to give them any cultural specificity that might mark them as different from the white characters, and they're afraid to give them deep character flaws that might make them interesting. So instead we've got this group of bland buppies who are mainly there to react to things that the white characters do. I hope that someone on GH's writing staff is watching BTG and taking notes, but I doubt it.

Another time when I was magnificently wrong. Taby is staying for another contracted term. At least that is the general impression among fans. Did you see her recent Instagram "Day at the studio". It was a lot of fun. It's still up if you want to see it. We see her in the booth apparently recording a song. Nurses Ball? Hope so.

Ha Ha Lol GIF

There is no way anyone from the GH team (writing or otherwise) is watching another soap when they can't even watch their own to fix the messes they've made/continue to make.

-- Daniel Cosgrove is doing a good job as Ezra. Obnoxious as all hell.

-- I have to LOL every time Sonny pulls a gun on someone. It's sad no one can tell Maurice Benard how ridiculous he looks.

-- Am I imagining things, or has the music REALLY been amped up on this show?  The dramatic, full-throated cues seem to be everywhere.

Yes! I noticed the same thing this week, especially in the scenes involving Ava or Kristina. The music was ramped up to 11. And I can’t lie, it helped keep me engaged. It made me feel like something actually shocking was on the horizon (didn’t happen).

Frankly, at times I find it a little concerning that they air some of MB’s scenes. He struggles to remember his lines, often puts inflections on the wrong words (probably due to not being able to remember his lines) and rarely looks engaged with his scene partners. There was a Carly and Sonny scene saying a few weeks ago where he completely flubbed his line, he just spat out gibberish and somehow it aired! I know Sonny often looks like a vampire with his shoe polish black dye job but he is not Barnabas Collins and this is not airing live in 1968.

It’s actually embarrassing. He’s supposed to be the star of the show and he actively makes it worse because he’s not even present in his scenes because he can hardly remember what’s been written for him. The only time he ever shows up is when he gets to yell at a woman.

GH definitely has problems addressing Black characters, but I can't give Y&R much more credit than I give GH. Things MAY be getting better with the Damian and Holden adds, but we'll see. Blacks haven't exactly been central on Y&R.

And sorry, I cannot give Bold credit for featuring Asian characters. That show is hardly an example of diversity.

I may be wrong, but in the confrontation scene between Sonny and Ava last week before Sonny collapsed, I'm sure I clocked MB looking at a teleprompter twice.
