Was there any reason to have Jack and Sharon married? It was a ridiculous pairing that went nowhere. They barely interact now and when they do it is not as former spouses. Similarly Jack marrying Nikki the second time was pointless.

Ashley's track record would look slightly better w/o Blade and Cole in the mix. Those stories could have played w/o marriage involved. They should have done more with Steven.

Remember when it was a fun bit of trivia that Erica Kane had a long list of former surnames? Now it's every other character.

Most of these decisions to marry characters off come down to the limitations of the genre, how do you build up to a conclusion on a show that never ends? How do you culminate a love story without a wedding? And you're all right, a bigger problem is when the marriages last under a year. It makes you wonder what the point was.

Especially when certain characters (Jack on Y&R for instance) say the same flowery BS to everyone they marry.
