Final 3 Soaps On the Air: What's Next?

CBS' Daytime line-up is solid, except for TT. TPIR/Y&R are a successful combination. B&B holds it's own, despite following local news and not Y&R in half the country. Despite scripted primetime ratings dropping 10-30% in the past 3 years, Y&R and B&B are flat, which is remarkable. Except for TT, I doubt CBS changes the line-up in the next 3 years.

I wouldn't say one day a week, because that's not the nature of daytime soaps, but they could trim the fat and be more concise. There's no reason for such bloated casts that are mostly filler. You could have a main cast of about 15, and then have everyone else as recurring. Focus on clear storytelling and character development. Spyder Games, while a fail, unfortunately I might add, had the right idea. It had a beginning, middle, end with enough threads to continue. No episode was just filler and characters came and went as needed. That could work with the right team.

Something like it is the only thing that can work now and is what should be done on streaming. Arc-based soap seasons, block taping with breaks. That is the only future the medium has in America, IMO but I doubt anyone will do it with the existing brands. The PP soaps came close but couldn't get there due to management.

GH could easily move to Hulu. Not sure how well it does on there. Never forget AMC and OLTL were often ranked #1 and #2 when they dropped way back in 2013.

I have a harder time picturing Y&R/B&B making that transition but it wouldn't surprise me.

Streaming did better than cable/broadcast this last year so ... it's the future whether people like it or not.

I hadn’t seen this until now but thanks for the update. I always did wonder how Frons reacted to the Chew being cancelled after he talked it up and what Susan Lucci said about him in her book. He hasn’t worked in television since definitely not the legacy he was hoping for I have to assume.

It's sad, the lack of visionaries in daytime. All My Children and One Life to Live should never have been canceled by ABC in the manner that they did it. If the shows had to go from broadcast TV, then ABC should have been more active in trying to transition them to streaming.

Such a wasted, missed opportunity. All we're left with are two dead properties that could have been profitably entertaining people on a streaming platform today, if only ABC had been visionary enough to fully support them.

There's talk of the network transitioning General Hospital to streaming; that's what they should have done to AMC or OLTL all those years ago.

    • Hahaha!!! Not Naomi being sure Chelesa ain't filming this time!!!   At last! Kat is proven right!!!   And hey, Nicole's Doctor friend, hey!!!   So far...this is giving.
    • Leslie having the nerve to show up at the Dupree House was pure insanity. Bill being revealed to be more ruthless than anyone would have thought was a good development. I have to imagine that will change Dani's view of wanting him back. The whole reveal was well done and Trisha Mann-Grant owned those scenes. That was most definitely material for an Emmy submission reel.
    • I agree, all the Guys Tux were nice. I like how they differ from each other and all stylish in a way. Awe, same. Can not believe I actually have enjoying a current daytime soap. Rewatching these episodes over the weekend as a jump back into Ryan's Hope and Santa Barbara. Agreed! Exciting times.

And it was pretty dope we didn't know that tidbit before the reveal.
    • yes I thought of the Renee party... But this is different because I'm talking specifically about the revealer convincing someone else to throw the party.  And the someone else complies, having no idea what the revealer plans. I'm wondering if Michele Val Jean did a first with BTG in 2025. But the BTG thread is already so busy -- that I thought it important to *NOT* clog it up with discussing this, so I brought the question here instead. That way, if other reveals come up in conversation, it's not a problem on this "general retro soap" thread.
    • Well, good that they showed Vanessa though I wish she was there.   Lol. And here comes Naomi. AND an explanation from Jacob.

She is diabolical! Remember in this scene she offered Martin a brownie which seemed so random? In this episode its revealed that when he was a kid, Ted used to bring him to a restaurant where the waitress would give him brownies....that waitress was Leslie. She was playing games and trying to jog his childhood memory
    • Yay!!!!!! And made it ON TIME, TOO!!!   And this is giving DAYS reveals circa late 90s already.
    • Bish what? I was not expecting that, I was for sure expecting him to go after Nicole (He still can). Looks like Leslie put her out! I love these new developments, Eva Dorian Lording her way into Fairmont Crest. My good sis better trap that doctor.
    • It should be in its synopsis on the DVR description of the show.
