Y&R September 2021 Discussion Thread

It is true. Courtney Hope is in her 30s, and her character often feels like a green yet ambitious recent college grad. And Summer and Kyle felt like high school kids playing dress-up as junior executives. But a lot of that is reflected in society, for sure. Thirty-year-olds simply felt older back in the days (compare “thirtysomething” to any comparable show these days—those characters feel ancient.) More and more, young adults feel like they’re in a prolonged adolescence.

There is a commentary to be had about forty-something men feeling rootless and adrift, but Y&R wasn’t making it unfortunately. They just didn’t know what to do with its male characters. They still don’t. Nick is all up in his siblings’ business with no story of his own.
