Best Soap Sibling Relationships - Past & Present

Whenever people talk about soaps, a lot of the mentions are always about the romantic couples. But I’ve always had a fascination with family dynamics, particularly sibling ones, and I get a kick out of watching the simple interactions between them on various shows.

Some of my favourite sibling relationships to watch:

  • Jack/Ashley - Y&R
  • Margo/Craig - ATWT
  • Hogan/Cagney/Quinn - SFT
  • Sami/Eric - DOOL
  • Frank/Harley - GL

Are there some soap sibling relationships that have made an impact on you guys throughout the years?

I’ve always enjoyed the competitive relationships between a brother and a sister, so Alan/Tracy on GH, Jack/Ashley on Y&R, and Alan/Alexandra on GL.

I also loved Olivia/Dru on Y&R and in spite of their scenery-devouring tendencies, can’t deny that Kim Zimmer and Laura Wright had a rare and believable sister connection as Reva and Cassie on GL.

I forgot Josh and Billy on GL and Clint and Bo on OLTL. The ‘80s cowboys.

Yep, every single scene these two shared (Chris Bernau and Bev McKinsey). I can’t believe I left them off my initial list. Hands down the most complicated sibling relationship ever (IMO).

I remember how excited I was back when it was announced in 1999 that ED was returning to Y&R, a lot because I wanted to see how she acted against PB as her on-screen brother. And in 20 years they certainly didn’t disappoint. This is just one example.

I heard from a few people that Bernau was ready to leave the show long before his illness (later revealed as AIDS) but agreed to stay on when he heard McKinsey would be playing his sister. Sadly, he died a few years later - so it’s a privilege we even got to see these two together and still at their peak.

Only a short clip, but OMG the cattiness from Dru towards Olivia here. It is such a dirty shame that Y&R wasted Victoria Rowell and Tonya Lee Williams so badly towards the mid-late 2000s. That was another incredibly complicated relationship.

Agreed. Also Reva and Roxie in the 80s (and Rusty too). The whole Shayne clan had a dynamic of their own well apart from the Lewises.

Going international once again.

•Phil and Grant Mitchell- Eastenders

•The Braxton Brothers/River Boys- Home and Away.

•The Slater Sisters (even though Kat was actually Zoe’s mother)- Eastenders

•Ronnie and Roxy Mitchell- Eastenders

I’m sure I missed a whole lot but it’s late here in London

I’ll match your international here (hello fellow Londoner )...

Neighbours - the Robinsons (Paul/Julie/Scott/Lucy). Nowadays it’s just Paul and Lucy, but they still have a very strong and genuine relationship.

GH- Luke and Bobbie.  I’ve watched a lot of classic scenes from their early years, and they always had a push/pull relationship.  Deep love, but also challenging each other, even in the worst of times.

This scene really shows that their relationship was still the same when BJ died.  Later writers and regimes turned their backs on Bobbie, so she no longer had a point of view and it changed the dynamics of their relationship.  But here you still see them as they were, older, but still there for each other and Luke also not always the best person to lean on.

    • He definitely got lost in the shuffle last year. First, they were implying that he was Drew’s son, then he was nothing more than just Violet’s bff

And then they changed him to being Dante and Brook Lynn’s son, which was clunky at first but I’m enjoying the storyline now.
    • GM is adorable, charming and fun onscreen despite months of nothing to do until recently, and has a bodacious bod. I'm not cosigning the show or this story - I haven't watched a full episode in over a month - but I think we're all taking the small victories in 2025 at this point. I'm open to testing this theory!
    • I think Jason might've posted some numbers for the syndication a while ago and the numbers for Falcon Crest was horrible. Like 1.5 rating or something, which was terrible.    ETA: it was actually Paul Raven:   New to syndication 60 min Fall Guy 67 markets 3.1/8 Falcon Crest 110 markets 1.1/5 To get into the top 40, you needed a 4.6/9 rating for reference - and Falcon Crest managed to get into a lot of markets to begin with. In the fall of 1985 Dynasty, Dallas and Knots were syndicated (show / rating / share / coverage % / markets): Dallas 3.4 10 51.7 92 Dynasty 3.4 10 48.7 47  Knots Landing 3.3 10 12.5 20  So, Knots as an example trippled Falcon Crest's rating with 20 markets - I'm sure those were major ones but it just goes to show you how much Falcon Crest bombed in syndication.
    • It's not bad but the stories move too slow. It's the same problem when Dan O'Connor was CO-HW with Van Etten, they have a million stories and they all drag on endlessly with no resolution. I'd argue the majority of the stories airing now are good but you get sick of waiting months for something to happen.
    • Thanks. I must have missed that period entirely for Lifetime.
    • Thanks. I know Marland did that type of thing sometimes but it's less likely with these characters. I don't even remember Alex ever mentioning him.
    • French fan summary Rusty took over Simon's job at Lewis Trucking after Simon transferred to Lewis Oil's North Carolina office to live near Jessie and Calla. I doubt they would bother following up a story for offscreen characters eg marriage and a baby.
    • I suspected that the performance with the reveal was the reason why the Ted actor got the axe and it looks like I was right. He wasn't really good at conveying what needed to be conveyed in those scenes. Claybon is at least slowly improving (but I agree that he still needs to work on his line delivery), but I do wonder what will happen when his big reveal is coming up.
    • I've already asked this before, recently, but can anyone who watched those years more closely tell me if anything said about Jessie and Simon at the end of their profiles is accurate (about them marrying, naming a baby after Brandon/Lujack, etc.)?
