Daytime’s Best Criers: Actors Who Can Turn on the Waterworks

Any competent performer can summon tears, but some truly raise crying to an artform, even to the point it becomes what they’re primarily known for. Who are daytime’s most talented criers?

I submit to you, Eva LaRue (Maria, AMC). The tear ducts open around 7:09, and admittedly Susan does a fabulous job here as well:

Tyler Christopher. I can't seem to find the clip on YouTube, but it would've been 2004 when Stefan fell off of the bluffs. Nikolas recalled Stefan saving him from drowning as a little boy. That scene really stands out to me.

Actually, both of Laura's sons cried a lot.

Greg Vaughan didn't cry much as Lucky but as Eric...

For all the times I have not enjoyed Peter Bergman as Jack, he can cry with the best of the mascara lined faces of any soap heroine.

I know it is harder than ever for performers with how they produce soaps now, but I have always hated the scrunched face and no tears crying that often takes place on soaps.  I hate it.

There are a lot of people who can cry that I don't consider good actors. Some rely entirely too much on tears to convey emotion and offer little else frankly (subtletly, nuance, anything else beisdes crocodile tears).

Back to the subject....

Florencia Lozano was a Viola Davis type crier, she'd give you tears, snot, the whole nine.

And the pterodactyl screaming. FloLo could have easily had a flourishing career as a death metal vocalist.

I always remember what Camille Paglia said about MTS in TV Guide: “I'm known for having dismissed Meryl Streep, but I can be deeply moved by Melody Thomas Scott as Nikki. Her passion, her suffering, her tortured face, her one perfect tear - incredible!"

    • What consequences are there to suffer? He didnt commit any crime and everyone already hates him. If anything this will set back the progress he's made with Naomi
    • Yes and I also loved how she focused on Chelsea and Naomi when she spilled Bill's involvement in all of this.
    • Danny: Don't drink it. Just hold it. Rocco drinks three laced cups.

    • OH, I AM.   And it looks like it's a pretty good episode so I might watch later on this weekend after work cuz I see a lot of scenes with people I actually like. Very happy to see Rocco/Danny appear to be getting story, too.
    • I do agree that a revival of EON would work, if it doesn't fall into doing all of the typical soap opera tropes... which it became guilty of in the final few years of the show with the over abundance of Raven/Sky at the expense of the actual detectives, police, etc. And I know it was mentioned earlier that Raven had lost any true connections on the show with the death of her on screen mother, and the loss of April/Draper/Deborah.. and I do agree with that. I actually thought the show would have done something with the Shelley character that could have connected her to the Raven character.  There were a few scenes where the two would have scenes and size one another up before they would go their separate ways.. so I assumed perhaps they would have been revealed as half-siblings and/or perhaps cousins.  Alas.. not to be.
    • It definitely flowed beautifully. So much that I was annoyed when Vanessa/Doug because I wanted to get back to the party. I know it was intentional to build up tension and suspense. It worked. lol. I'm glad it was there in hingsight because it gave us that great conversation between Doug and Vanessa. Foreshadowing? And yesss!!! This episode was sooo old school soap giving beat after beat after beat leading up to the unveiling of Eva as Ted's daughter. And we still have plenty of fallout/aftereffects to work through.   Speaking of...Bill, Bill, Bill lol. Good to have confirmation HE was the scary lawyer.   I'm sure I will have a busy Monday, but I can't wait for it. I don't know what I'm looking forward to more. Probably Anita vs Silk Press Sheila tbh. And yes, I feel they will be matching each other 'blow for blow.'
    • And if they go there, it could also be tied to Johnny completely cutting him off, possibly going to work for Titan, etc.
    • @AbcNbc247 maybe it is just that they've gone to that well too often, and I don't like when DAYS goes dark, but I'm OK with EJ abusing drugs, and just skipping the whole sobriety part. Side note: experiencing hallucinations of my son killing me would be enough for me to never want to take a pill again.

    • Part of the reason that Courtney worked at OLTL was because the show had an actual character for her to play.  One that was somewhat different than her character on AW, and after the way she was treated over at AW.. it had to have been nice to be courted onto a new soap that actually valued your contributions.
    • I figured the "long" was already implied
