I guess it shows how well my friends know me that even thought I haven't talked to some of them in ages, they still messaged me to see if I was okay. My jaw hasn't dropped over her since I ran into her, chatting to my friend about Buffy, at a 7th Street Starbucks in Manhattan back when I lived there. The irony of me rewatching her Season 1 Gossip Girl scenes as Georgina Sparks last night (and that I just finished binging the reboot where she returns as well last week)...a great introduction as a villainess if ever I saw one...is not lost on me. First Scooby down.

Michelle, just like Shannen Doherty before her, has always been a part of my life. From Pete&Pete to Harriet the Spy. I loved her turn in Mysterious Skin...which is one of the book I loved growing up as a Southern boy looking for gay novels in a town that did not have very many. And to see her appear on Buffy the Vampire Slayer...oomf! Dawn wasn't my favorite, but that had nothing to do with Michelle's performance. She was a kid. A key. And she turned in some great performance. Not to mention her horror stuff and turn to wearing black.

Which brings me to Gossip Girl. Georgina Sparks was supposed to go to Mischa Barton. Thank Jesus (in-joke) it did not. Cuz she was one of those characters that when she popped up in episodes...like Mama Pope on Scandal...you knew there was about to be some mess popping off and it was going to be gorgeous. And Michelle played Georgina's brand of chaos to the hilt. From hate her on screen to love to hate her to when is she coming back...she navigated that character to some deliciously wicked heights. It was no wonder she was resurrected on the reboot.

And at 39? My brother is turning 40 this weekend. So yes, this hits. Especially just given how much of a Buffy/Angel fan I was and still am.

First Scooby down. RIP.

I totally forgot she was his daughter. Le sigh.

Allegedly, cause of death was not related to her transplant.

Michelle frankly hadn't seemed well for many years. Her bizarre manner of posting msgs on social media (with lots of stop/start sentences) always unsettled me. It's a tragic loss of a very talented young woman, and I hope she's at peace.

Whitney Houston once said to me that Roberta Flack’s voice was one of the purest voices she’d ever heard. I grew up scouring the records my Parents collected. Mrs. Flack was one of their favorites and quite instantly became one of mine as soon as I was exposed to her. She looked cool and intelligent, gentle and yet militant. The songs she recorded from ‘Compared To What’ to ‘The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’ to her version of ‘Ballad Of The Sad Young Men’ fascinated me with their beauty and sophistication. Mrs. Flack was an artist, a singer-songwriter, a pianist and composer who moved me and showed me through her own creative choices and standards what else was possible within the idiom of Soul. Killing Me Softly, a song Mrs. Flack didn’t write, but made hugely popular became the song that catapulted myself and the Fugees into household phenomena. We wanted to honor the beauty and brilliance of this song and her performance of it to our generation. I will forever be grateful for the sensitivity and delicate power of her Love and Artistry. Rest in Grace Beloved One.
