Thaao Penghlis Returning to 'Days of our Lives'

Posted by
Thaao-Penghlis-Tony-DiMera.jpgThaao Penghlis, who has played Tony DiMera and Andre DiMera off and on since the early 1980s on Days of our Lives, is back filming at the iconic soap opera.

Penghlis' Andre was killed off Days earlier this year but he has made sporadic appearances since then.

Penghlis revealed on social media that he was back filming at the set once again.

"Loved being with Deidre Hall this week," he posted. "Vets make a difference in case some people have forgotten. We build a great foundation on Days that was years in the making. Walk through the door and speak truth. Next. #days Opens a New Window. ⁦@DeidreHall Opens a New Window. ⁩ thank you."

Budget and production schedule. Rotating actors means they can keep contract players with less guaranteed episodes - these returns are short-term and thus paid less. The production schedule allows them to work around guest actors' schedules + plus they film a lot more episodes in a week than rest of soaps so the time commitment is smaller for them. For example last week DAYS filmed 8 episodes: 13565-13572 (airing 4/2/19-4/11/19). It's so crazy that it's September and these episodes won't air until April - we're almost at 7 months in advance now.

Oh and I'd take any appearance by TP - he's still got it. I hope he's one of the 'undead' - they show really needs a fun bad guy.

7 months ahead.

that is just......no wonder this show is dreck of the worst kind right now.

Question. why can't/won't they go back to filming 5 episodes a week? I have always been confused about this since they went to this awful taping schedule.

My understanding is that filming eight episodes per week (rather than five) saves production money, allowing the studio to "go dark" for longer periods of time, etc.  But I could be wrong.

You are correct. Unfortunately, the choice is no show or a show that is operating in a vacuum - there is no way to abandon a S/L or characters that aren't working and there is no option to capitalize on a story/character that captures the audience's attention. It's a real shame, but that's the reality.

I tried to watch DAYS on my quarterly catch-up on NBC's Roku app - I noticed two things: 1) extremely long scenes - like 2 - 4 minutes - that's hard to watch especially since the dialogue doesn't really move things forward; and 2) the commercial blocks - on the 2nd break when I saw 1 of 7(!) for 3 month old episode, I quit. Maybe I'll try again in a couple of weeks. I kinda hate giving up DAYS completely.

    • If NBC could have for seen the ratings of Lovers & Friends (the replacement for Somerset).. they would have for sure kept Somerset on the air longer. https://jason47.com/days/ratings1976.html  (ratings for Somerset in the final year) https://jason47.com/days/ratings1977.html (ratings for Lovers & Friends short run...getting as low as a 2 rating).

    • I liked them, too, and was really disappointed it never went anywhere. The whole art theft story was ridiculous, but they had a nice chemistry. Certainly nicer than Alan with Christine. With her, he looked like the funny uncle. The worst thing they did to Bolger, IMO, was having Phillip write that DREADFUL novel and dramatizing it while he wrote it. GAG, that has to be in the running for one of their worst storylines that didn't involve wacky things like clones or time travel. Soaps rarely do school storylines, or don't do them for very long. Not the case so much in the early days of soaps, but after GH took off in the late 70s other soaps took their lead and would catapult teens/young adults into adult stories right away. That's one reason Phillip and Mindy ended up with so many ex-spouses--they started getting married really young. They shipped Dina and Cameron off really fast after high school and stuck Alan Michael in a marriage storyline with Harley. Did he EVER go to college? I don't think so. It may also partly explain why Quint and Annabelle had to go, beyond TPTB wanting to do a cast sweep. Teaching is not a profession that plays well on a soap. Quint definitely had to quit being Indiana Jones, because that wore thin really fast, but they didn't do him favors by making him a professor. If they wanted to keep him, they should have done what they did with Amanda (who was in another dead-end soap job, concert pianist)--have him work at Spaulding as one of the major stockholders.
    • Judith McConnell (Augusta) and Denise Alexander (Lesley) were great screen partners on GH.  They got into some stellar arguments in character in the medicine room.
    • He also commented that Brad knows that fans are sick of the constant fake deaths on this show: Finn, Sheila, etc and that it's hard to take this seriously if it's another fake death

    • I just don't think Brad Bell has it in him to actually kill off Liam. He should have killed off Eric when he had the chance. I know John McCook is an original cast member, but Eric is even more useless than Liam. Eric should have died and then it would be revealed that he died without a valid will, so Donna, as his wife, inherits everything, including his shares in Forrester Creations.
    • I think we all will, isn't that how soaps work? lol
    • ^^ I'll believe it when it actually happens.
