Just finishing S9, the "dream season". I am curious if anyone knows when the producers/writers knew that Patrick Duffy would be back for S10. Was it a last minute addition for the finale? Did they know a few months before the season ended? Curious if his return impacted the last few episodes or if at the time of the writing they had fully intended to pick up where they were leaving off. I wonder what the writers thought if they were moving forward with their own vision and then told to scrap it all because Duffy was coming back.

Sorry, I love backstage stuff. haha.

I started watching Dallas as a teen when Duffy returned for S10. I just, for the first time, watched through from Episode One thru S9.

Patrick Duffy return was announced at the beginning of 1986. I remember looking at the ratings to see if Dallas would get a boost from the news. It never did until the cliffhanger. The last half hour of the show that featured Pam's wedding to Mark, the two explosions and Bobby in the shower peaked at 26.2 in the ratings.

I don't believe any of the stories were changed due to Duffy returning. All the stories were played as planned until the cliffhanger. One scene that was edited/cut was when Pam opened the shower door. It was Mark in the shower and not Bobby. And the scene with Pam and Mark in the shower was suppose to appear towards the middle of the show. I recall VP mentioned that she wondered what had happened to that scene. But then recognized it at the end only to be edited with Bobby in the shower.

I unsuccessfully tried to find the SOD issue when they asked various soap writers how they would solve the Bobby in the shower cliffhanger that was published prior to the reveal of the dream season.

It was a great idea for a story to see how others in the field would've solved the issue, and I wish they had done that more frequently.

If anyone can find a link to the article, it would be fun to read it again.

I found it on the tellytalk forum.

I was most taken by Stephen Birmingham's Gaslight inspired solution.  While it wouldn't have created more opportunities to tell stories about Bobby for future seasons, the idea of Mark turning into a villain is fun.

And, who knew there were five types of liquid paper?

A couple of theories that don`t turn up in TV Guide include the Rotating Miss Ellie Theory, which posits that it`s impossible to confuse ”Dallas” fans with casting changes.

After all, Barbara Bel Geddes was Miss Ellie when the show was hatched in 1978. Medical problems put Bel Geddes on the sidelines, and she was replaced for a time by Donna Reed. But, eventually, the original Miss Ellie, eminently decent and dumb as a post where her fussin` and feudin` boys are concerned, returned to Southfork.

Then there was brother Gary, played for two seasons by David Ackroyd and two more by Ted Shackleford, who eventually moved the role to ”Knots Landing.” Gary was the lubricous Miss Lucy`s dad, and a megawimp even when compared to his sniveling brother, Bobby.

Meanwhile, actor David Wayne played ”Digger” Barnes for a season, and was then replaced by Keenan Wynn in the demanding role of Bobby`s father-in-law.

But ”Dallas” steamed ahead despite the changing faces, with J.R. protecting his fortune, and his wife Sue Ellen sneaking drinks, and the whole family sitting on that veranda, waiting for J.R. to foreclose on their futures.

Clearly, a show with this staying power and an audience with a certifiable weakness for buying ranchettes in northern Idaho sight unseen isn`t going to have any problem if Bobby comes back as an Evil Twin, or the Six Million Dollar Mope, or an Alien Life Force.

After eight seasons, the premise of ”Dallas” is stretched so tight the writers might as well start freezing characters to rise up later on, or get into some serious, Tarrant County, Texas voodoo.

Why not? How many worthless Asian oil leases can J.R. sell to his friends? How many of J.R.`s business partners can Sue Ellen get into the sack? As a people, as a society, we waited for the answer to ”Who Shot J.R. back in 1979-80 with the same numerical fervor with which we followed Geraldo Rivera into Al Capone`s vault this year.

We deserve what we get. One way or another, we`re getting Bobby Ewing.

I think David Wayne was replaced because he had signed on to do the short lived series " House Calls" At the time he was appearing as Digger on Dallas, he also appeared on Eight Is Enough (another Lorimar series) as the absentee father of Tom Bradford( Dick Van Patten). The 2 part episode was filmed on location in Hawaii.

When they did the EIE Hawaii episodes in 1979, Lorimar should have had episodes where the Ewings visit Hawaii. Maybe the Honeymoon that Bobby and Pam never had etc...

Dallas ended 33 years ago today. I still find it dumb the producers actually thought there was going to be another season, just like what happened to their former colleague Paulsen at Dynasty just two years earlier, especially being like #58 in the ratings. At at least over at Falcon Crest (and later Knots) they saw the writing on the wall and wrapped everything up to a more or less a satisfying conclusion.

I had some actual 91-‘92 season materialized it would have been about Michelle getting her revenge, maybe?

    • Delusional Dani would view it as hope... but realistically, it's being cordial and adult...  something they both need to do.  Especially if Naomi and Chelsea ever decide to have children... it would be nice to have them being mature around one another and their kids and grandkids.   Kat needs to simmer down and let the police do their job.  I can excuse the coat and trying it on because she didn't know that it was previously Silk Press Sheila's... but the way she was with Mona when Mona was asked to ID the person in the video was Kat 'leading the witness on'. Even Mona said that she was now more then determined to see if Leslie/Dana was on the camera.   So a defense attorney could paint Mona as an unreliable witness.
    • Even though I can firm a map of Michigan (that included Bay City) was used on the show, I still never heard Michigan referred to in any of the dialogue -- ever.  So the map doesn't really make it canon, in my opinion.  That map was probably supplied by the prop-guy, and he might not have even told TPTB that he was going to use an identifiable state map.  On the other hand, there were hints that it was in Michigan, with references to cold winters, etc.  And on Somerset, a nearby city was Lansing.  But I don't recall Lansing ever being mentioned on AW, but perhaps it was.   I do wish TPTB would have made AW's canonical location in Michigan.  First, because many fans already believed it was in Michigan, and because eventually putting all the remaining P&G soap opera cities in Illinois was silly and pointless.  Variety is the spice of live, my dears.

date: Wednesday, June 4 | Sara A. Bible, Danielle Paige | Phideaux Xavier Anita is definitely lost in space. The space of her own mind and history. Oh, hello, miss eye-sex at the bar of Uptown! I see you eye-sexing Ms Chelsea! We love to see it. Shanice stopped Dana dead in her tracks. Good on her. It comes out: Barbara was the fourth Articulette, started the group, came up with the name, etc. Dante Greene is about to become the most hated man to exist in this universe, and that's a high-level position that many covet. I appreciate seeing Anita own up to her wrongdoings and that Vernon is still by her side. So, Sharon wants to use Anita for her own benefit, and that does surprise me. That ugliness is right there. At least Tracy, outwardly, seems more open to forgiving Anita and reuniting for the one-off concert. I had a feeling it might've been a stroke (or mini-stroke) but did not want to admit it. It hits close to home for me. Very close. Oh, that glimmer and gleam in Bill's eye and that ever-so-slight smirk on his face of Dani checking on him at the hospital. Yeah. He's still got it for her. Vernon continues to be a wise man with some wisdom unlike any other, and I love that he's getting through to Anita. Ugh. Sharon, you're ugly, ugly, ugly. You will reap what you sow. That's right, child bride, watch the woman that knows your husband better than you ever could. Katherine, mama, sit down and be careful. Now this is in the firm hands of Jacob and the police department. Dana, barking up Andre's tree. She works fast. Like a bitch in heat, fast. The one thing Tracy has with Anita that unites them is their love for Barbara and acknowledging her as part of the Articulette's history. Andre, you big dumb dumb. You never saw the suspect the footage before the police can. Ugh. Notes: For the first time in a while, we see Tide and get a commercial right after.
    • I feel like they've worked out the kinks with most of the wigs (notably: Anita, Kat & Chelsea) but they still haven't gotten it right with Naomi. They need to cut her a custom hairline to account for her widows peak. I also don't think you can do a side part without addressing that.
    • There's nothing about the Kyle/Claire pairing that makes me say "Damn, I really want them together."   Yep. Everything interesting about her was swept away.   We were supposed to be moved by that bracelet, but all I could think of was "We never see these kids." Oh, and hearing Harrison had a charm was LOL   Exactly. It's vets rinsing and repeating all the old hits. Josh Griffith thinks honoring history means giving us the same stories over again. Where are the young people on this show? WTH is going on? Cole is a perfect example to represent everything JG is. He does reference history and bring characters back, but it's invariably a huge disappointment. Cole has done NOTHING since his return. Now he's sick, and instead of us worrying about him, we're smirking because these wealthy people won't call a doctor. I don't think anyone cares if he lives or dies.   Complete disaster. The Alexander Dumas story is the worst of all. ALL this buildup for ALL these months -- you just know it's going to land with a thud. Even the best writer couldn't follow through with something good. Will any of it matter? Two days after we see all these shocked faces when Dumas appears, we'll be back to talking about takeovers and changes in job titles.   None of this will change unless Josh Griffith is fired, and unfortunately, the ratings aren't calling for a firing. I will never understand why Y&R and B&B are immune to long periods of relly bad storytelling.
    • I find Kat annoying but Colby plays the part well! I do like the antagonism between Kat/Eva and Kat/Leslie.  Leslie has balls. I found it a bit annoying at first, but at least the writers are keeping it as a throughline. The "twist" of Eva hiding the evidence to protect Leslie was nice. I hope it's a way to keep Leslie going longer. I was afraid she'd get written into a corner and she's one of the best finds of the show.  Tamara is nailing her scenes. I was losing interest in the Articulettes, but Barbara's suicide and now Sharon wanting to use the reunion to push herself at Anita's expense have me interested again.  Nice to see Dani tone it down with Bill and Hayley.

        Naomi's wig is sliding!
    • Uh oh, is Bill giving Dani some hope here? He appreciated her concern, so it's not all hate there. Hayley doesn't seem so pleased.

This dumb bish is leaving a trail of witnesses to corroborate her crashing out
