An article from September 1971, announcing that Robby had been cast in the film, Jory, said that he would be on SFT until he left to film in Mexico, which was due to start on November 17, 1971. So maybe Michael was just a replacement until Robby finished filming Jory? Though I haven't found anything about Robby returning to SFT. You might be right and Robby originated the role and played it for a few months and then Maitland took over and continued until Gary Tomlin assumed the role.
