I agree, it's nothing new, the programming blocs that newer networks had a couple of decades ago that catered to more urban audiences are proof of that. Those shows were eventually dropped, though, when those networks took different directions. What is somewhat new is minorities in leading roles in dramas, as it the only leading roles before were mostly in sitcoms.

Lol this thread just is too hilarious. I could read it all day long...reads left and right.

Cookie with Andre at the beginning of the episode just killed me...."he's won't talk......just shattered to pieces.

Good for Rhonda to stick up for herself. Liked that they're not making her one dimensional. If Oprah brings even half of what she brought to the Butler then I'm sold. Love the heffa haters be damned.

Yep, that's the thing. I remember about 10-15 years ago, TV Land was into making documentaries about TV history, and there was one about blacks in dramatic roles. Several people pointed out that there had never been a successful family drama centered on a black family on network television - ever. I refused to believe it, but it was true!! It boggles my mind, especially with the success of Roots, that no one ever thought to bring forth a black answer to Eight is Enough or The Waltons or whatever.

Soul Food may have literally been the first to run for a considerable amount of time, and that was post-2000. Amazing.
