@MichaelGL It's amazing that Potter/Marland GL is holding its own against massive hit/pop culture phenomenon General Hospital. OTOH Y&R is struggling against All My Children.

NBC entire network was a mess in the early 1980s. As we all know, NBC would have some signs of life in daytime at the start of supercouple Days in 1983 and recover in primetime Fall 1984 with the premiere of The Cosby Show.

GL is strong. Y&R is struggling within itself I guess. With the time change and expansion to an hour it lost its footing but I consider Y&R strong in 1980. All My Children was on fire then and One Life was coming into its own. I know Agnes Nixon was still HW at AMC. I consider All MY Children's best and golden years as 1978 to 1984. I think she also may have been doing some writing for OLTL or consulting. NBC was a mess, both daytime and nighttime.

Out of curiosity, I Googled that date. Those short preemptions were on the day of a fire at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Eighty-five people died as a result of the fire. Just speculation, but perhaps the preemptions were to provide coverage of the fire.

Variety reported daytime ratings for week ending March 7 1980

What is interesting is that the afternoon speciais were included, which I have never seen reported before . They were shown over a number of years pre-empting the 4pm shows. I always wondered how they did and if they were shown mainly for good PR. Anyway, this week shows that they did score excellent numbers although not the desirable demos that advertisers wanted.

1. ABC Afternoon Special 'What Are Friends For?'

2. GH

3. NBC Special Treat ?

4. AMC

5. OLTL

6. GL

7. Y&R

8. CBS Library Special ?

9. AW

10. ATWT

If Days had been in better shape, I'd say Y&R would have dropped far further in the ratings during this period. Days struggling more was a saving grace in a lot of ways.

Though I also think Y&R had a strong base viewership who were willing to weather the storm.

GL at #2. Looked up what was happening that week and found the following summary if anyone else is curious:

Holly left with Christina for Switzerland and told Ed she was getting out of his way for the sake of his and Rita’s happiness.  Tim was arrested for drunk driving and later jumped on Kelly for blabbing to Sara.  Elizabeth took Phillip from Justin and Jackie for Thanksgiving.  Andy urged Barbara to go into the restaurant business to get over the shock of Adam and Sara’s planned wedding.  Rita accused Ed of blaming her for Holly’s departure.  Chet drew a sketch of Jane Marie to aid in the search for her.  Ben decided to be a witness for Jennifer’s defense, but couldn’t face telling Amanda.  Diane got fed up with Joe when he insisted that the tapes are missing.  Alan told Rita he will surprise Hope with a Christmas vacation to their deserted island.

    • -- Tamara Tunie was good today, but can we hold back on handing out Emmys? I'm not seeing that yet. -- So Anita has Barbara's entire letter committed to memory, yet it took her DECADES to reach out to Tracy and Sharon? Uh....ok. I don't get the impression that THE DUPREES spent a lot of time thinking about the little people. -- We again heard "Articulettes Strong," this time in the letter. Make it stop already. -- I'll wait and see on this "Anita's Sin" story. My bottom line is that it's unfair to point blame when someone takes his/her own life. -- I thought Tomas looked fine af in that suit today, and that the fit was perfect. -- Why is Basic Ashley kissing her boyfriend while at work in the hospital? I find that inappropriate and ridiculous. Ashley still doesn't act like someone in love. -- The 3-way conversation among Ashley, Derek, and Andre was awkward as hell. -- Hayley was embarrassing for taking her pregnancy test to Dani's. Dani is embarrassing to harp on it. These two need to stay away from each other. -- Dani treats Andre like crap. What he sees in her beyond the physical, I have no idea. No way is either of these two in love. -- Also clueless? Bill and Hayley for thinking Naomi would love hearing about the pregnancy.
    • Susan Lucci was on bereavement vacation because her on screen mom had recently passed away so she was off canvas when this tornado occurred.
    • Thanks @YRfan23 Wow I didn’t realize the cast has gotten that tiny either which is absolutely pitiful.    Surprised that Budig is still on as Taylor barely watched any lol tbh but nonr of the recent daily recaps ever mention her anymore I figured she was out the door soon.
    • I love the yellow bumpers with the crew lol. That's Donna Lewis as the music at the beginning! I haven't heard her in ages. R.J. and Tea were so hot and so underrated. I remember seeing the bit with the Buchanan men promising to show Max a good time in his bedroom and it's still hysterical.
    • I think a lot would've gotten over it the same way they got over the Trina recast, especially since it became swiftly clear NAC is never coming back. The key issue, we agree, is Frank. As long as Trina is onscreen he's not touching that. As for Nikolas, honestly I'd kill him off. Adam Huss has done a wonderful job in a very difficult situation but I don't think he has leading man power for a soap opera (not because he's gay, but he's very intense and I don't think it translates to potential lighter or romantic material; his flirting with Ava briefly was strange) and I was holding out for Tyler to recover and return someday. I am not interested in Nikolas #5 or 6.
    • AlwaysAMC - Your posts are a crack up; they make me laugh.  Thanks.  I especially like how detailed you get enthused about something, and how you curtly and flippantly you reject that which you find subpar.  LOL.   What's great about Annie is her increasing rooting value as time goes on.   I often wanted Annie to be victorious.  Watros infuses her with an energy and a vulnerability that really works, even at times when neither should. Soap viewers often remember and talk about the Big Moments, which is fine, but what I also find really interesting is the 1-2 week time frame that follows the Big Moment.  Later, there are scenes between Annie and Rick involving a trip to the hospital (no way am I telling you why and what happens - hopefully no one does) that I think are as well done as the Big Moment.  Astonishing stuff. Oh..and to reiterate...I ain't telling you sh*t.  You'll just have to suffer!  Ain't anticipation grand?  LOL.
    • @alwaysAMC Glad you made it to the soft rock theme. I share your disgust for the Gilly story, as many viewers did. Gilly was never a big character, but she was a part of why the early '90s feel real and different for GL, and she deserved a much better exit. This was also the last worthwhile role Amelia Marshall had on daytime (I don't even know if Passions fans would disagree). This was also Petronia Paley's only major chance at story and as someone who always appreciated her work, I'm sorry it did not go better for her. And I liked Charles Ewing a great deal on Loving, so I was even more unhappy with how they treated Griffin. It's a deeply offensive role, in many ways.  As for slapping, you may enjoy this, if you are able to find anything onscreen underneath all the ham. It really goes into hysteria in the second clip. As a bonus, you also get a quick glimpse of why the Billy and Mindy recasts were not accepted by viewers. One positive I will say about this clip is that it's one of the few times I remember the show making clear that Roger was able to defend himself if he had to do so.
