absolutely nothing. Lesley could have easily come out of retirement and Lucas could have easily went to school...simply as that

fact is they didn't and therefore weren't potential candidates. Even if Lucas had gone to school while away, he'd be what an intern or at the very least starting residency now? Way too young with little to no experience for the role
