I'm not really a classic DAYS fan so I was surprised when I read on Wikipedia that Kate Roberts was introduced in 1977 as Kate Winograd. I always thought that Kate was introduced in the early 90s, played by Debrorah Adair, which started the Kate / Vivian / Victor triangle. Also, if she married and got abused by Curtis Reed in the 1970s, how come she didn't recognize her children (Billie and Austin) in the 1990s? And why was she a prostitute when she had a working job as an anesthesiologist in the 70s? I checked SoapCentral and they list DA debuting as Kate in the 90s, too. So does anyone know (Jason? lol) if 70s Kate is present day Kate?

The two characters are completely different characters. People on wikipedia keep putting that in because they haven't grasped the fact that a show would use two characters with the same name.

And then there is the sticky point of the official DAYS book, written by Lorraine Zenka with a forward by Ken Corday, that credits Lauren Koslow as "Katherine Elizabeth Winograd etc."...

Unfortunately there's also the sticking point of both Kates having affairs with Bill Horton, causing Laura's mental break and institutionalization. It would make more sense for Kate Roberts to be Kate Winograd considering the backstory, but they are not the same character.

Don't feel dumb. I've pondered this same point myself before. This is how we figure stuff out!

Also, regarding Kate's kids: She didn't recognize them in the early 90s because she'd be led to believe they were killed as children between the time she left Curtis and when she went to retrieve them. Meanwhile, the kids had be led to believe their mother abandoned them.
