I'm kind of glad it's cancelled. I don't think I would have been able to stomach the Richie and Patrick reunion of nextarrow-10x10.png season if it had been renewed, which may still happen. But at least there will be less of a torture factor to get there.

That's one of the reasons I don't understand why people were so fixated on Patrick being with Richie, when it was obvious that Patrick just wasn't very into him. I just found it sad that Richie's fans wanted that for him. At least with Kevin there was a balancearrow-10x10.png of mutual feelings and respect. Patrick treated Richie like a fetish he wanted to check off on his sex list, and then didn't know how to tell him "I'm just not into you."

Some other thoughts regarding Patrick that I think kind of hit the head:

I think season 2 is recognized as being the superior season by critics. There was a ton of love for the series during the last few episodes, so I think there was nearly universal critical support for the second season. Most of the criticism (i.e. Patrick is unlikable, the show is boring) stemmed from the initial first season. Most felt that a lot of the major criticisms of Looking were dealt with in the second season for better or worse outside of the Patrick issues.

Season two is my personal favorite, I felt there were more interesting re-watch material this season (2x01, 2x03, 2x08) than anything that was created the first season.

Well, for me I would say that while the writers did appear to deal with a lot of the issues they had Season 1, the problem that came out of Season 2 which was tighter for sure was that Patrick was unlikeable. When most people are liking Auggie more than the star...AUGGIE MOST HATED CHARACTER LAST SEASON...that is a problem. Of course, we still had the 'it's boring,' but whatever. And there are still people who think Episode 5 in the first season is still the high point of the whole series.

Is Season 2 my personal favorite? Hmmm...ask me after I do a rewatch. lol.

However, I have to mention that I loved the fact that Season 1 was all about Patrick and Richie who gave Pat what he needed, but not what Pat wanted. This season he got what he wanted...only to see what he wanted...wasn't what he wanted at all. He had it with the guy who gave him what he needed. Grounding. Would have been interesting to see where they went from there, but alas...

The special HBO is going to air is going to be an epic disaster I feel like. Unless they have Patrick ending up solo (which to me would mean I wasted 1.5 years of life watching a character NOT find true love) half of the audience is going to pissed no matter who he chooses.

Even now I'm not sure what I want. I think Richie is too nice and too good for him. Yet I have a bad feeling they're gonna tie it up that way

Finishing up season 2, just watched the episode with Doris' dad's death. Lauren Weedman was phenomenal in it and it was a great way to get to know more about Doris's life and family. The moments where she told Dom she wanted to invest in his restaurant and then cried in Malik's arms were heartbreaking. And Kevin professing his love for Patrick. Yay!

    • It's funny you say that because part of the entertainment of the trials on the show are all the day players who come on as witnesses and jurors.  I'm certain it was like the Law and Order of its time. It employed so many New York actors, that if you look close enough, there's usually someone vaguely recognizable in the courtroom.
    • I will defend Dante.  People already suspect he may be a bit unstable from time to time (from his time as a prisoner).  And, he's taking care of other people's kids from time to time.  So, he has reason to be cautious with those in his care.
    • Josh continues to try and milk Abbott/Newman rivalry. First it was Billy/Victoria, then Kyle/Summer, then Noah/Allie (that worked out well) and now Kyle/Claire. Do we have any inkling when Billy Flynn will arrive and who he will play? I'm sure Cole's illness will mostly play offscreen. What's in store for Nick and Sharon? Is it time to put them back together? I can't see any other romantic options. Nick has no children on the canvas to play off, as Christian is never seen. Sharon has only Mariah onscreen.
    • I would appreciate (if they're not coming), for future scripts to refer to them by their iconic hairdos.  For example, if Hope needs to call Chelsea because Bo has Sepsis, I'd like Shawn-D to say, "My Mom called Chelsea (the one with the sassy short black hair) for an update." Also, new rule, if Melanie does return, she needs to dye her hair back to red.  I googled who she was five times during Victor's funeral.

    • Broderick, thank you for all of the info [I edited for space]. I am so grateful for everyone filling in the blanks for me. I suspected the Nora/Eliot scene was very important and it was setting something up but I didn't know what. Can't wait to see it play out. The two actors had such a great back and forth. I should have made the Paige/Patty Hearst connection. I thought Paige was in love with Brian from the first episode I watched but it seemed as if they were brother and sister. Steve kept being affectionate with her so I assumed he was the love interest. Then she was affectionate with someone else and well..she's a very busy woman. I can't wait to see Frances Fisher show up. (I'm trying to be vague because I don't know what would be a spoiler in this storyline) Now it makes sense why Draper would be upset. I didn't get the whole background of why he didn't go to NY. I'm a sucker for good acting, so I might still side with April and Margo, if the writers don't give Draper more to do besides yelling.  He had more chemistry with Logan, but I know that's not happening.  Something else I noticed: the show really takes care with even the smallest parts. The acting is superb. Too often, I noticed on older soaps they don't take care with the recurring or day players (Ryan's Hope was so bad with this that I couldn't make it through some episodes). It's only been six episodes, but so far, the casting department was spot on.
    • I thought Dante was overreacting.  Gio made some mistakes but he's young and he tried.  It's not like he dragged two 14 years to a party and made them get blackout drunk.  Dante can have the initial upset reaction, but to go on and on was a bit much.
    • His (adoptive) nieces.  Chelsea and Stephanie.  I think Abby was involved too, but I am not sure if they are related lol.
    • That was such a dark story. I never liked Swamp girl after that. And then the dating your cousin thing. I think wasn’t Max in a triangle with two of his cousins?
    • Thank you, @j swift.  I'm probably more sympathetic to Draper Scott than most audience members are -- even though I'm absolutely CRAZY about Ann Williams & her bizarre Margo Huntington character

The more I watch these episodes -- and I've watched several of them a zillion times, I'm ashamed to admit -- you realize there's a WHOLE lot of passive-aggressive hostility brewing inside Margo Huntington about Draper.  She wants to take April AWAY from him and recreate the childhood that she never got to experience with April, because of the adoption 25 years ago.  Draper has sense enough to realize how heartless and vindictive Margo really is about other people's lives and their feelings, but he bites his tongue rather than poison his wife's mind about how horrible her mother really is.  And I admire him for that.  He's a sweet boy.
    • Unfortunately, as the 90s wore on, Felicia started wearing as many gray and neutral tones as Giorgio Armani and Donna Karan could produce, and the shoulder pads deflated to a drop sleeve.
