Katie Who? Ellen DeGeneres Crushes, Delivers Best Ratings Since 2003

Dr. Oz also gets off to a strong start in his fourth season and Anderson improves with a new format.

While Katie got off to a strong start, the best among the talk show newcomers, Ellen and Dr. Oz returned with season premieres that were also noteworthy.

Ellen scored a 3.0 in total households in metered markets, and its highest rating since the 2006-2007 season, (Full national numbers won’t be available until next week). That projects Ellen as taking an 8 percent share of the viewing audience, which would be her best in that measure since the show went on the air in 2003.

Warner Bros. and stations carrying Ellen have to be very pleased. Ellen was tops not only in households but also among women 25 to 54 (with a 2.2 rating among the key daytime audience demo), women 18 to 49 (1.7) and all adults 25 to 54 (1.4).

It's just kind of blah. Nothing really bad, but nothing to get excited about either. As others have said, she is clearly attempting to emulate Oprah's style, but Oprah, love her or hate her, was unique. She mixed the celebrity stuff with real world issues and stories taken from the news. Plus she connected with the audience better than almost anyone. Katie's perkiness comes off a little fake to me.

I think the show is ok. It's not one I'll watch regularly, only when she has someone on that interests me. But Oprah became the same to me her last few years. Yeah they are trying to be Oprah and she's not Oprah. I think over time shell find what works best for her. She might do better with more serious interviews because I just find her hard to be that relatable person that many felt Oprah was at one time.

THE TALK Season Premiere Up 28% From Last Year; KATIE Drops On Day 2

The third season premiere of THE TALK delivered a 2.3 household rating in Nielsen’s 56 local metered markets, a +28% increase from last year’s premiere and matching its all-time high in the metered markets.

THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS stars Melody Thomas Scott and Michelle Stafford joined THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL's Katherine Kelly Lang on the "Makeup Free Monday" episode.

Due to live coverage of U.S. Open Men’s Final, Monday’s episode of THE TALK aired at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 11 in the Pacific markets. The final weighted average for this telecast includes the regular airing on Monday in Eastern, Central and Mountain markets as well as the Tuesday 10:00 a.m. airing in Pacific markets.

Metered markets where CBS Owned Stations posted their biggest year-to-year gains include New York, up +50% (2.4/08 from 1.6/05); Chicago, up +108% (2.5/08 from 1.2/04); Philadelphia, +79% (2.5/08 from 1.4/04); Boston, up +250% (1.4/05 from 0.4/02); Detroit, up +69% (2.2/06 from 1.3/04); Miami, up +92% (2.5/07 from 1.3/04); and Denver, up +114% (1.5/07 from 0.7/03).

Meanwhile, in its second outing, Katie Couric’s new syndicated talk show drew a 2.3 household rating/7 share in the metered markets, down 18% from its big series premiere.

Katie WHO ;)

http://www.deadline.com/2012/09/katie-drops-again-steve-harvey-now-top-new-syndicated-talk-show-in-women-25-54/#utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

Uh-oh. In its fourth airing on Thursday, Katie Couric’s new syndicated talk show dropped 26% in households to a 1.7/5 in the metered markets and 38% to a 0.8/5 in the key Women 25-54 demographic. In households, Katie still finished first among the freshman daytime talk shows but by a smaller margin. In W25-54, it was edged by Steve Harvey (0.9/6 in W 25-54, 1.3/4 in HH), which finished as No.1 for the first time since the launch of Katie.

In four days, Katie has shed 39% in households and 50% in W 25-54 from its big premiere numbers. What is more alarming is that the show has fallen below the time period average last season (2.3/7 HH, 1.4/8 in W25-54), when a large number of stations carried General Hospital. In comparison, Steve Harvey is up from a 1.0/3 HH and 0.5/3 W 25-54 rating in the time period last year. Steve Harvey also has shown consistency, posting a 1.5/4 in HH for its series premiere last week and again this Monday, 1.4/4 on Tuesday and Wednesday and a 1.3/4 o Thursday, ranking No. 2 behind Katie among the newcomers. But his strength has really been in the women demos, posting a 0.9 W 25-54 rating three time this week and a 1.0 on Wednesday. Steve Harvey also has helped a its lead-out, Ellen, which is posting significant year-to-year gains.

Is anyone watching the interview with Raffaele Sollecito, Amanda Knox's ex boyfriend? A mess! This cow is going at him as if she's prosecuting him. I know she's trying to ask the "hard" questions but making your guest look like a lying idiot is not the way to do it. Ugh, Oprah would have handled this soooo well.

I wonder if anyone remembers who was murdered? I has no issue with this interview of Katie's because I think Knox and her boyfriend are guilty as hell. Don't believe all the stuff the Knox PR machine has drummed up to portray her as aome all american persecuted young student. Meredith Kerchers family has stayed silent though all this, has not capitalized on the murder of their daughter, and firmly believe to this day that 2 killers have been set free.

    • She absolutely needs to be on this show.
    • they need to bring her back for a role! I say expand Bill's family and have her play his meddling aunt that moves into his house with he and Hayley and goes head to head with Anita
    • I'll be brief with this response because it is veering into Classic thread territory, but I agree about the Taggert writing especially when the show revealed he worked with/was mentored by Deke and knew Sonny killed him.  It gave Taggert a bias that was unnecessary and made it seem like he was a poor judge of character, so the audience was already primed to dislike him even if Taggert was right. Plus, Garcia and Taggert were pretty obnoxious, especially early on lol.
    • THE ROAD OF LIFE from 12-13-1984 to 7-1-1955. But this soap had been on radio & very popular from as far back as 1937. Then in 1954 P&G suggested to Irna Phillips that she develop this project for television & P&G would sponsor it. It may have been the beginnings of the sponsor-owned soaps.
    • SOD Where Are They Now? She left daytime more than 25 years ago, but GUIDING LIGHT fans have not forgotten Lynne Adams (ex-Leslie, GUIDING LIGHT, 1963-71; 1973-76; ex-Amy, SECRET STORM, 1971-72). She's one of Digest's most frequently requested "what ever happened to...." GL alums — a pleasant surprise to the actress. "I'm really flattered," she smiles, then admits that fans still occasionally recognize Leslie Jackson Bauer Norris Bauer. "It's amazing because I haven't done it for so many years." By Melissa Scardaville   The years that she did spend there were good ones. "My main memory is of all the women I knew on the show, like Charita [Bauer, ex-Bert], and Fran Myers [ex-Peggy] used to be a great friend of mine." Adams's main storyline — the tortured triangle of Mike/Leslie/Ed — was also a bright spot. "I really enjoyed doing it, until the character got married [to Mike] and she was happy." That, in turn, was the impetus for Adams to leave. "The character got boring, frankly," she shares. "It was very conservative and boring and happy. Not that happy is bad; happy is great, but it's not that great on a soap opera. You want to have some conflict and drama, and her biggest drama was that she was worried that her stepdaughter was going to get involved with some guy. It just wasn't interesting, so I left."   GL has ties to Adams's current project, Made-Up, a comedy about our culture of beauty that she wrote, starred in (with her sister, Brooke Adams, as well as brother-in-law Tony Shalhoub and Eva Amurri) and produced with Sister Films, a company she founded with Brooke. "The whole time I was on GUIDING LIGHT, I used to dye my hair because I went white when I was about 16," she shares. "After I had been off the soap for a while, I let my hair go, and it was shocking the difference in the way people treated me. You feel like you've disappeared and you're not a viable person somehow. Then, I would go to an audition wearing a wig, and suddenly it was a whole different story again."   That experience led her to write a one-woman show, Two-Faced, which she performed for nine years. Adams then embarked upon the arduous task of taking a version of the play to the screen — "One time, we had the $5 million in the bank and Kevin Kline couldn't do it and all the money fell apart." But, thanks to her husband, George Fifield, a media arts curator, she eventually got it shot on video as a mockumentary. "It's a movie that people who used to know me would love to see," she notes. To check if the film is coming to your area, log onto www.madeupthemovie.com. Adams also points out, "If you click 'Contact,' that [e-mail] comes to me, and I'll answer it."   Sure, her plate is full now, but would Adams ever return to soaps? "If you had asked me two years ago, I would have said yes. If you had asked me 10 years ago, I would have said no. Right now, I live in Boston, so that would make it kind of impossible," she chuckles. "But I loved doing soaps. It was a hard job, but it was really fun. I used to have some relationships with some of the people who watched the show who would write to me. I miss all that."
    • Thank you for this!  My guess is that they had actresses audition as backup in case Tunie said no. Debbi Morgan mentioned she was asked but turned them down and I imagine it was likely for Anita as well. I love that they sent her a letter acknowledging her advocacy.  I hope that down the line they consider her for another role. We need two Articulettes!
    • Very interesting - thanks, @P.J. and @DeeVee!  This makes me want to go back in time and start my watch at '89. I think I'm going to power through just a little more of '96 right now just to see A-M/Lucy marry (so I can see their happy ending), how Phillip enters the picture, more of Alex vs. Amanda (because that's so funny/amusing to me), and what happens to Blake's twin babies (the only things really keeping me going right now).
    • Today marks the 139th anniversary of Emily Dickinson’s death. She died on May 15, 1886 at the age of 55. WalMart has said their prices are going up. As ideas go, I am againsr this one.
    • Just finished yesterday &  SEX Bill & Hayley & I'm looking around, waiting for them to be through, not into it. Dani & Andre
