Unpopular Opinions: 2012 Edition

I'll go first:

B&B

- While not perfect, the show is currently in the best shape it's been in since 2003.

Y&R

- Genie Francis is terrific as Genevieve Atkinson. I know she wasn't well liked in her first few months on her show, but I'm currently watching June 2011 episodes and I LOVE her campy take on the character, despite the overall wretchedness of the storyline. Although I never saw Francis on GH, so I don't have that to compare it to. I'd love to see her on B&B in a Sally Spectra/Jackie Marone type role.

- Phyllis is one of very few characters to actually flourish under MAB (save for the Lucy custody madness). And of course, I still consider La Stafford to be the best actress in daytime.

- Maura West was AT LEAST as miscast as Diane as Shari Shattuck was as Ashley.

I never minded Katharine and Jill as mother and daughter.

I never liked Billy or Mac.

I would take Megan McTavish - with a strong EP - over any headwriter in daytime today.

I don't care about who is or isn't nominated for a Daytime Emmy. They have become such a joke that I think not winning one is almost an honor. Every year we are supposed to be outraged if someone isn't nominated or doesn't win. The latest is Chandler Massey, who, unless there is a Best Drake Hogestyn Impression category, has not done anything all that award worthy.

--Sharon Case needs to be jettisoned to B&B stat. Whether as Sharon or a new character, at least Bradley would have the smarts to put her with Diamont.

All non Giggly Heffa female Y&R characters need to go to B&B.

It's not like Maria/Hogan has any use for them.

-I LOVED JR's exit storyline. It was daring for a soap to take a character that the audience actually rooted for and had him end up in a very dark place. Oh and watching him call Dixie on all her sh!T was cathartic to say the least.

Amen.

I LOVE Stephen Nichols and Tucker even more and find him FAR more interesting and charasmatic than Jack, Victor, and Adam

Tucker is tolerable but backburnering Jill was a bad move.

--Joshua Morrow is not a bad actor and plays Nick Newman exactly how he should be.

Joshua Morrow's problem is Joshua Morrow is playing Joshua Morrow.

--If Y&R had listened to ME and cast Mark Collier instead of Sean Patrick Flannery as (whatshisname- I don't even remember), the character would still be on the canvas, viable, and there would be someone for the women of Genoa City to sleep with BESIDES Nicholas Newman.

The character would still be on the show but he would be in a backburner relationship with a glorified dayplayer like Chloe or Avery.

--Maura West was NOT miscast as Diane.

Maura was indeed miscast.

She should have never been cast as Diane.

HOWEVER since Y&R was never going to ask Alex or Susan back the LEAST they could have done was write for Maura.

She's talented enough that had the show had actually invested in her she would have done well despite the issues with her casting..

The problem was the writing for her as a slut.

Writing her as a slut wasn't the problem.

The problem was removing everything that made Diane Diane to unnecessarily prop other characters.

--I preferred Adrienne Frantz on Y&R over B&B and still think there is FAR more story potential on Y&R than she does on her original show.

She wouldn't be bad on B&B if they wrote her like an adult.

She was miscast on Y&R especially when LML tried to sell her as being the same age as Davetta & Adrienne.

Why they let her go in '91 and never asked her back I'll never understand

She wanted to leave.

I'd forgotten about Maggie. I guess she probably never would have stayed, since the actress is close to LML and Lechowick, but I liked her.

Tammy Lauren was a good actress & she had more chemistry with Doug Davidson than he had with any actress in YEARS.

Who was Ben?

Jack's campaign manager (played by Billy Warlock)

I guess I see Y&R as being damaged by Smith, and then LML, but to me MAB/Sheffer/Hamner are the ones who did the irreversible damage.

Smith's Y&R was definitely heavily damaged but it was light years ahead of anything by LML & Maria/Hogan/Hamner.

Maria & Hogan while totally awful have only made LML's mess worse.

Oh that's right, I remember Warlock being on the show briefly. Did he have any story or pairing of his own?

Nope.

But the character had potential solely due to Warlock (which is why he ended up staying past his initial run)

The ONLY reason that Davetta was fired was that she was too black.

That's pretty much it in a nutshell. What's sad is that her firing undid the strides that the character had made and regressed her back into the bubbleheaded Valley girl that we see today.

For that, Lily Winters Ashby is a prime example of lost potential.

--Speaking of that, the Dobsons' second run on SB didn't suck AT ALL, nor was it a disappointment. Yes, they made a mistake with Louise Sorel, but Louise has said herself that the situation was created by Paul Rauch, not the Dobsons. Hell, even I know the Augusta/Dash flirtation began and ended under Paul Rauch and Maralyn Thoma/Pratt. The Dobsons had NOTHING to do with it and walked into a REAL mess at SB. HUGE mistakes had been made and they were stuck wrapping up stories they'd never have started in the first place. It's a pity they didn't write the show to the end because Pam Long is what truly KILLED Santa Barbara. Well she had lots of help from Wanda DeJesus, Maria Ellingsen, Kim Zimmer, and Eileen Davidson. It's a little known fact that the Dobsons were actually positioning Angela as their leading anti-heroine and it was working. Pam Long came on and it all went to sh!t.

IIRC, Bridget Dobson herself said in an interview with SOD that it would have taken at least two years to get SANTA BARBARA back on-track; two years which, in retrospect, the show didn't have, which is why they ultimately relinquished day-to-day supervision to Paul Rauch and Pam Long.

Here's one of mine:

DAYS wouldn't go near Chad/Will as an actual pairing for no other reason than someone at the show probably had a reputation to protect.

And that's all I'm going to say about that.

:)

Seriously Chad is about as interesting as a dead fish now. They should make him bisexual and do a Gabi/Chad/Will triangle

At this point, I'd rather ditch Chad and save Gabi for when Will & Sonny decide to have a baby with a surrogate.

Which I still, to this day, don't understand. They fought their asses off for 4 years in court over creative control and they relinquish it again after 8 months???

To be fair, Bridget and Jerry did stay on as Senior Executive Producers until the show's end. As much as they wanted to resume full control over their show, however, I think the Dobsons realized things simply were too far gone. The SANTA BARBARA they had regained was not the SANTA BARBARA that was taken from them in '88. Factor in a network that had all but given up on the series, and I think you can understand why the pair were willing to allow another team (albeit, one of THEIR choosing) to take over.

She was completely miscast.

I wanted Susan back, but I think I would've accepted Maura as Diane if she had been 10 years older and a brunette.

If TPTB wanted to throw Maura at the Newman men, she should've been Grace Turner.

OK, my most unpopular opinion of all:

I FLOVED B&B's Berry Island Trippy CGI EPISODE.
