It's beyond weird that a fairly high security (though is it maximum? even for Cole? oh well...) prison would have women and men even in seperate areas but it is true of most US prisons that the libraries are shared--I know prisons thet keep juveniles and adults seperately have had some controversy and issues because they still can have "encounters" (and I mean that in a violent way) due to sharing a library--I only know this because I recently read a New Yorker article that decried something that happened in a Michigan prison library.
