The Revolution: Discussion Thread

Remember when Frons said this?

“These new shows expand ABC Daytime’s focus to include more programming that is informative and authentic and centers on transformation, food, and lifestyle — cornerstones of programming that resonates with daytime viewers as evidenced by the success of The View. While we are excited about our new shows and the shift in our business, I can’t help but recognize how bittersweet the change is. We are taking this bold step to expand our business because viewers are looking for different types of programming these days. They are telling us there is room for informative, authentic, and fun shows that are relatable, offer a wide variety of opinions, and focus on ‘real life’ takeaways. A perfect example of this is The View, and that factored into our decision. The Chew and The Revolution are in the same vein and will be great additions to the lineup, with The View serving as an ideal foundation from which to launch these programs. They will also provide enormous opportunity for the creation of ancillary businesses and growth.”

How's that strategy working out for you now ABC? laugh.png

May the ratings continue to fall.

I am really surprised that ABC came up with such a flimsy concept to begin with. Honestly, it would have made a lot more sense for GMA in the Afternoon to have started on January 16.

If memory serves me correctly, I seem to recall that some folks at SON predicted that The Chew would bomb even worse than The Revolution (or at least perform as poorly). I never agreed with this line of thinking, because a cooking show on network daytime television was a unique concept (in the sense that it had never been done before).

I apologize for the confusion, Dragonflies, but when I said "network daytime television" I was referring to the non-cable outlets. To the best of my knowledge, The Chew is the first cooking show to be on a "Big 3" network's daytime schedule. These networks have a wider reach than The Food Network, and therefore I can see why some would find The Chew to be appealing.

I am really splitting hairs here, but Rachael Ray is syndicated whereas The Chew is actually part of a network daytime lineup. But even if Rachel Ray was on a network television lineup, cooking is popular enough to where I am not surprised two food shows (outside The Food Network) would do well. (Plus, The Chew is different from Ray's show in that the latter program has more elements of a traditional talk show than does the former.)

People knew The Revolution was going to have less success, because the show was in development hell - that was the only reason OLTL got a few more months than AMC.
