Back to the 1970 summaries:

Henry/Sharon and Howie/Jane are almost interchangeable to me.

Meg is [!@#$%^&*] nuts.

Audrey couldn't go through with the wedding because she was suffering from vertigo?  Where were she and Tom planning to marry?  On top of the Sears Tower in Chicago?

I repeat: Meg is [!@#$%^&*] nuts.

I'm in the same boat, Billy was my AJ and I hated the hypocrisy of Sonny, Jason, Carly and their sycophants so much that I had to love him. Luckily I've grown past that and simply being in opposition to one of those three doesn't make me a fan. See: Nina.

@Khan Billy's height never bothered me, though I think his stature absolutely influenced the writing (despite the fact that he and Mo see eye to eye) it always felt so...petty. But what can I expect from Elton John meets Jean Randolph.

I always noticed Billy Warlock's height and the show did make it obvious that AJ was short.  While I didn't even realize Sonny was short until Jax showed up because Mo's height was always hidden by shorter love interests.   I would also agree with the comment that BW's AJ didn't have much chemistry with his family or love interests although I did like him and Skye as schemers.   Idk, it's so how to grade BW's AJ because his writing was just so truly awful and I can't think of a good story where his AJ came off in a positive light.

Thank you for the 60s and 1970 summaries. I love them! It is wonderful....and thanks to it, we have discovered that one of the first GH restaurants is " The isle of Capri"....Has anyone ever seen a picture of this restaurant? It would be awesome to see it! And I would love to see "The Isle of Capri" nowadays...with Josslyn and Dex having dinner in a place like that...

Billy just wasn’t right for me as AJ.  SK had the chemistry with everyone thing that Billy did not- both Carly’s he played against, Jason, the rest of the Q family.  Even Liz.

Billy would have made a better offspring of Celia and Jimmy Lee Holt if they wanted him in the Q fold.

I do think Sean Kanan's A.J. was sympathetic, especially in his initial return in 2012-13. Early on, at least, there was a clear investment in playing him with Michael, with Monica, with Elizabeth, with beloved characters like Brenda to rebuild the character in a positive way. They made a big deal of him racing to see Edward before he died and being heartbroken, racing up the stairs only to miss the moment. They turned on him later but A.J. remained (for me, anyway) rootable.

But I'm biased in general towards A.J., because I also think Billy's A.J. did have real chemistry with the family unit and a lot of people. (It's touching to hear him talk about how close he was to John Ingle and Stuart Damon.) They just had no investment in him for him, in part because as Billy says in that very dishy podcast interview, GH never wanted him and neither did Riche. I was surprised to discover JFP and co. apparently wanted him back full time in 2005, promising him the moon story-wise, and that he was apparently very happy with his material for the first time during that short stint - but DAYS offered him 'an ungodly amount of money' and he went there (despite BW's having spent the past year performing The Normal Heart in NYC and preferring theater), only to not work for his first two months and discover they had no story for him, they just wanted to take him off GH. Classic Ken Corday!

His OLTL story was amusing - he got called by Michael Bruno to talk to FV and then was hired and working the same day on 45 pages of material, only to discover he was a recast of Michael Lowry. "Michael Lowry is six foot two!"

Interesting too to hear that Guza approached him to apologize for never writing for him and 'underestimating him.' Better late than never, I suppose. I have no idea what role Billy played on Y&R.

Part of that was during LML's run, I think, when she hit upon the notion of Nikki doing something other than sitting all day at the Newman ranch and waiting for Victor to come home.

As I think someone else mentioned, Barbara Bloom mandated they take him after the initial recast post-SK filmed for a week and didn't work out - she knew from DAYS and Baywatch that he could deliver. Riche and Guza took him because they were told to. It was good money and while he never liked the story he loved all the people he worked with, including Mo and Steve who he was close to and who he said hated beating up on him everyday lol. He was also very, very close with JI and Stuart Damon.

Before he began filming it, yes. He'd heard from an inside source he was to be killed off and tried to back out but was threatened with litigation. He claims he arrived on-set furious, but JFP took him aside and said it was going to be a fakeout and that they wanted him back on contract full time. BW says he ended up loving his material in '05 but still took the DAYS offer because of the money involved.

I have my doubts any of the big promises they made him about A.J. would ever have materialized, but I am glad he enjoyed his final stint.

Did Billy and Marcy Walker have an amicable divorce? I ask because earlier in the Billy discussion, the idea of his doing a New York soap came up. For whatever reason, All My Children was the first one that came to mind. I'd have cast him as Andrew Hunter, fresh from prison.

    • I was talking about 1986, but the glimpses of 1982 are about the same.
    • I skimmed some of the 1982 synopses; Steve was planning on an opening an office in Finland, and I think Jim went there as part of the preparation. That probably was a big issue; AW had already gone to San Diego that year, with Rachel/Steve/Mitch. And to upstate NY with Pete and Diana. I wonder if upstate was as expensive lol  AW in 1982 has always fascinated me, because of how messy it was
    • That makes sense. What a messy time for the show. And any changes they made were mostly for the worse.
    • The transition from Neal to Adam was very abrupt, and to be honest my theory is that the character of Neal was designed so that we think he is super shady but then it turns out that he was on the side of good all along so Neal could have seamlessly become a hero of the BCPD with no need for Adam. I don't know whether Robert Lupone was hired on a short contract or if he was fired from a longer-term contract because they decided they wanted someone who was more of a leading man type, but I can imagine a scenario where Charles Grant did both the undercover Egyptian treasure/flirt with Victoria and the straighter-arrow day to day police investigation. But in my imagined scenario the MJ prostitution plotline probably doesn't exist and instead he probably continues a relationship with Victoria. The story seems very odd to me. I assume that David Canary would have been included only because a plotline where Steve is going to Finland in which only Rachel is seen in actual Finland seems unlikely. The synopses explicitly mention that Alice can't go with Steve but would whoever was playing Alice at that time have had the kind of clout to get the remote cancelled? It also strikes me as unlikely that production would have approved the expensive location shoot and *then* cancelled it only because of jealousy. It seems more likely that they rejected it because of the expense but then the jealousy part got added to the gossip speculatively, possibly because while it was being worked out they justified not including more castmembers because of the expense.
    • My comment has nothing to do with cast resentment, but does relate to the Finland location shoot: It may be a coincidence, but Jim Matthews died in Finland in 1982.  Hugh Marlowe's final episode was in April 1982, but the character probably didn't die untll May or June. (I'm unable to find the character's date of death, only the date of Marlowe's final episode). SInce Jim and Rachel had very little interaction after around 1975, it is unlikely Jim's death in Finland had any connection to Rachel's potential visit, but the choice to have Jim die in that location at that time is a head-scratcher.  I'm sure the writers sent Jim on an extended trip (and off-screen) because of Marlowe's illness.  But Finland seems like a strange choice considering the (then) recently cancelled location shoot.
    • I totally understand your sloths concern about it and I agree with you. Let’s hope the show plays it’s cards right.    Further comments about the last few episodes: - I liked that one of the attendees was filming the scene. That’s realistic. I wonder if the writers will follow up with that.  - Martin and Smitty trying to drag Leslie out was very heteronormative, so perfectly in line with them two as characters lol.    As for the future: it’s obvious the Duprees will come to accept Eva one way or another, but the rivalry with Kay should be here for the long term   On the topic of acting: the only bad actors I’m seeing are Ted and Derek. Tomas hasn’t proven to be either good or bad, so far, but he’s certainly mediocre and uncharismatic. He sucks the energy out of the scenes and I don’t see any couple of women ever vying for him.
    • I’m trying to think which actors VW were working with at the time, and none of them had been there for a while. Even like Mac and Ada didn’t have that big of a part in Rachel’s storyline.  And Jamie was involved with all that movie stuff.
    • Brooke did ads before ATWT too. That probably helped get her the job. After ATWT she seemed to branch more into hosting, along with ads.  I think I saw Kelley in an ad or two, but you're right she wasn't on as much.
    •   Thanks for sharing these. I wonder if Charles might have been in the running for Adam. I know Preacher was a bit of a bad boy at times on EON, but Neal seemed to be a step down, and Robert Lupone had played a similar part on AMC. Given the huge cast turnover at this point I wonder who thought they had been there long enough to go.  Laura Malone/Chris Rich would get a remote within the next year.
    • Interesting.  It seems to allude to that statement that Warren Burton made around that time about some AW actors getting special treatment.  I wonder who was resentful about not getting to go.
