when I was a kid this opening fascinated me for some reason with the flashlight effect and that sound.

Qfan, you probably already know this, but the Hawaii Five-O theme was performed by the Ventures (who are considered the most successful instrumental band in rock and roll history); this theme actually peaked at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1969. (Unfortunately, it is rare for tv themes to do well on the charts.) The Ventures biggest hit came in 1960, with the #2 single "Walk - Don't Run."
