It's a shame they had a good theme with the witches, but they didn't play it right. Honestly, I would've kept things 100% present day with no Frankenstein's and for Kathy Bates and Angela Bassett, I would've come up with more interesting characters for them. They tried to do too much and ended up wasting so much good story, as usual.

Agreed. It really suffered from one of Ryan Murphy's worst problems -- where he gets obsessed with random little story and character ideas and then loses interest in the sparkly things almost immediately. Let's do incest! OK, now let's delve into the history of New Orleans and their race culture. Wait howabout a Witch with a killer vagina! OK, enough of that WITCH HUNTERS!! Creepy ghost butler guy will get the sacrificed baby, no one will notice, right? Creepy incestuous religious fanatic! Etc. I mean really the ultimate story I guess was the search for the Supreme, which got brought up early on and then was barely even brought up again until the end.

I'm not sure anything can be read into his using race issues and slave torture, other than it being a backdrop for "shocking" the audience. Kathy Bates and Angela Bassett were this season's Nazi and holocaust survivor. I don't think he was highlighting injustice or trying make a point/deliver a message. Is it poor taste? Definitely. Gratuitous? Oh yes. Offensive? That depends on the viewer. If one views it in a vaccuum, it's means nothing and should be taken as such. Just like everything else on this show, everything is resolved via death anyway (using horror licence as a justification) so what point could there be other than escapist nonsense? To try read anything deeper, is to give the show more credit than it deserves or it aims to be. It's all meaningless fluff and if one can accept that without being offended, it can be fun (but one may need a shower afterwards regardless...)

Fair enough--and I largely agree with that.

My issue is two fold. He repeatedly said how he understood why many found Asylum (which worked for me, but I get it) too disturbing, Tim Minear was downgraded from showrunner, Murphy back in and he promised repeatedly how this season would be about fun and camp. That's fine, but while I think it's fair for a show like this to go into poor taste (as horror often does) and for shocks, but he also in his Ent Weekly weekly recaps stressed how important and powerful he thought his whole racism message was. So I do think he aims for more.

I haven't read any of his interviews, so can't comment too much because I may misinterpret what he said. I do agree with you that Asylum was the better season - it was the least camp of all the seasons, played up the darkness of the setting as a strength and an undercurrent of abandonment in all its forms was present in its tone.

I hope he knows better than to come back. I've never been a huge fan, but after seeing bootleg videos and hearing all the praise he really is killing it in Glass Menagerie on Broadway and has some talent I never realized. Maybe he only works well on stage, or even in the role of Tom--a role that is so often played badly by the likes of Sam Watterston and John Malkovich (I think he is in Ryan Murphy's tv film of The Normal Heart--since he was in the recent revival--something I'm kinda dreading. How the hell did Murphy get that property after years of Larry Kramer refusing it to anyone?)

    • Wow, they really wasted Lucky in this latest return. How could they botch it up like that? And I really hate what they've done with Nina. So she's going to betray the one person who's done nothing but be kind and loving to her after having moved past the fact that she pretended to be her long lost daughter for someone who isn't even worth it at this point? There is really no coming back for Nina, is there? I honestly won't be surprised if both Sasha and Willow end up disowning Nina and cutting her out of their lives for good. And Nina is going to be even more of a pariah and social outcast than she already is.  Honestly, if the writers are going to make the entire town hate Nina, they might as well make her a full blown villain at this point and have her actually own it. Maybe losing Willow and the kids forever might finally prompt Nina to embrace her dark side and go full steam ahead with her villain era. At least make her the kind of villain people can get behind and enjoy, not... whatever this is.  On the other hand, Willow delivering Sasha's kid in court is actually an interesting twist. Wonder what Sasha is going to name her daughter now?
    • Someone needs to help me stop laughing because I've been crying from laughter in the past half an hour. My husband came to check if I'm okay. I'm more than okay. Is it Christmas already?

    • I can't imagine it was a shock to any of the actors, especially one so industry savy as Zimmer. However, it must have been like all of us, watching a loved one fading away and knowing it was going to happen but still being shocked when it does. Wheeler is to blame for waiting so long for that Hail Mary pass to be thrown. Its funny but this was the time that the writing seem to be getting better so someone fixed that, but why didnt it happen sooner? Again, at least the GL I saw go off the air, despite looking like it was filmed in my backyard, was the GL I knew with the right characters coming back and the right things happening. Unlike ATWT.....
    • This is a guess, but Kat is going to mess around and help get Leslie off on a technicality. She is too determined to go around the law. Sharon is so entertaining. The way she acted like Anita was about to trip her down or something at the end was hilarious. The silence from Tracy and Sharon when Anita called them out for not backing Barbara out was telling. They can't defend themselves because they were just as hungry for success as Anita was.
    • I am sure it was not what JJ thought was going to happen with Lucky or Lucky/Liz and I don't think JJ will ever be back.  That was just an awful return and his return in 2010 wasn't anything great lol.

    • I don't think this is anything but a pause. I think there's a lot more of Liz/Lucky coming up ahead. Think of it as a classic fakeout.  Edit to ADD: Well, crap. Ignore me. Outta there.
    • Now she used to be on the Directing rotation, so is this when she was off of it for awhile & now is back?

    • A Day Off from the Drama Felt Like a Breath of Fresh Air Honestly, I didn’t mind the change of pace today. The episode had a lighter tone, and it was refreshing—like coming up for air after all the intensity lately.  But, did anyone else notice that Bo's hospital room is larger than Marlena's living room? Chad and Leo: A Surprisingly Enjoyable Pairing I actually enjoy Leo in scenes with Chad. It's a shame Chad hasn't been given more lighthearted material before—he’s much funnier than I expected. At least we were spared the referenced Ari/Leo interaction (dodged that bullet). Gabi’s Hair: A Curl Too Far Let’s talk about Gabi’s hair. Those curtain curly-q bangs? Ridiculous. Not only unattractive but completely impractical. And if she doesn’t like living with Leo, then… move out. Yes, it’s Rafe’s house, but she’s the CEO and titular head of GabiChic. If Chanel and Johnny can afford rent, I’m sure Gabi could swing Li Shin’s old place (they've probably painted since Gabi found him dead, and Melinda was held hostage there). Rafe and the FBI: Why Though? I still don’t understand the narrative function of Rafe suddenly working for the FBI—unless it’s to explain why he’s perpetually off-screen. Side note: Has anyone told Elon’s team that the Bureau is hiring middle-aged men who talk to stuffed animals and are apparently set to retire with full pensions in less than a decade? Doug3 and the Mystery of the Necklace Now, Doug3 is suddenly concerned about the age of consent? Not touching that. Also—whatever happened to his friendship with Sofia? And how did he manage to find a loan shark when he only hangs out with high school girls?  How much could he have borrowed?  He changed his name and moved out of town, so he must owe enough for the loan shark to hire repo men to find him and photograph underage women. But the real head-scratcher: why is he asking Leo who bought the necklace? It’s Melinda. He knows it’s Melinda. Was this filmed out of order? Or did she fence it? I’m confused. Gwen Mention #1 (And we all know what happens when you say her name three times…) Cat: The Kookiness Has Worn Thin I’ve tried. Really. But I don’t like Cat. I don’t like her secret. I don’t like that she’s never at work covering Marlena’s phones. I don’t like her brand of kooky. I don’t like that she stopped blow-drying her hair. Honestly, I never invested much in her character because I figured she’d be gone by now. But now? I just don’t like her.
    • I'm actually stunned at the writing for Liz and Lucky today. It feels like a writing team that's out to make JJ look as bad as possible -- immature, irresponsible, and ridiculous. He comes off as a complete loser.
