More Reactions....

"It really is the end of the genre as we know it," said Sara Bibel, who covers soap operas for the website xfinityTV.com. " 'One Life to Live' was the No. 3 soap last week and it's still being canceled. So this is a signal that the networks no longer have any faith in the genre's appeal. They even expect lower ratings with these new shows, but they also expect to save 30 to 40 percent in production costs."

-------------------

"This was stunning," said Michael Logan, the resident soap opera expert at TV Guide. "These are two more giants. After the cancellations of 'The Guiding Light' and 'As the World Turns,' there was a real sense that we'd hit bottom and the six remaining soaps would be with us for a while. But to see Susan Lucci out of a job really signals that this is a new day in daytime."

Wow, I was under the impression that he "Skype'd" with both casts live, I didn't realize that the news was delivered in a prepared, edited video. Kind of cowardly, he didn't have to "take questions" or hear their cries.

It's the AMC fans I really feel for. They have only a couple months left to shoot, a bunch of poor stories already in motion, and a clusterfuck behind the scenes. If Lorraine Broderick can salvage that in record time - unlikely with Julie Carruthers handling the logistics - she is a miracle worker. Say what you will about Ron Carlivati who has had many a lowlight since 2008, but he knows and loves that show and there has always been at least one story I enjoy; OLTL is, I feel, on a bit of an upswing again, and what's more they clearly began planning for the end and the end couples some time ago, even if the couples aren't always what I would want (John and Natalie - please no). I can believe they will bring back a lot of people and do their best to do right by them. I'm not too worried about us. It's AMC I fear for.

We might get a lot of montages to establish plot developments, the old, "I have something important to tell you" cue music, pull out slowly from the window... Angie and Jesse should be their primary focus, that and Erica b/c while we may tolerate other characters going out on a less than stellar note, we don't want that for her.
