Although I've enjoyed Lindsay Frost in other roles since her ATWT stint, she was simply all wrong for the role of Betsy. Her deep, throaty voice was the opposite of Meg's "little girl" voice. Meg also seemed much more petite than her replacement. Worst of all, Lindsay had zero chemistry with Frank Runyeon, and as a result ATWT lost it's signature couple.

I think it was more than that. Marland himself saw Steve and Betsy as a "limited" couple when he returned to the show in '85. Even if Meg Ryan had stayed around, I think Steve and Betsy's breakup was inevitable.

In a lot of ways I think they were a limited couple - and Steve was a very limited character. Basically just a hothead.

If I was watching back then, or if I wasn't still annoyed by the Meg Ryan of the last 10-15 years, I might have a different view, but from what I've seen I much prefer Lindsay in the role. What I've seen of Meg's Betsy mostly involves her standing around looking stupefied. Lindsay's Betsy just seems so much more adult to me, and while there isn't the same chemistry with Steve, there's still a certain maturity and softness, yet also a hard edge, which makes for very complex and real relationships with characters like Emily or Josh.

I just wish that the character hadn't been shunted off after Lindsay left.

Carl, you make some valid points. Maybe I'm blinded by the fact that the Steve/Betsy/Craig storyline was the first one to draw me into ATWT. They really packed a lot into the two years it ran. It was a shame the way this once-vital s/l just petered out after Meg Ryan left. I think Lindsay catches a lot of the flack for that. But what really ticked me off was having a major hero like Steve end up as a drug runner in a Greek prison (is he still there?).

I actually enjoyed Lindsay Frost as Betsy. She's the main Betsy I've seen when watching older episodes. I haven't gotten to see anything substantial from Meg Ryan, but she seems too sweet for me. Since I've never been too big on AW or AMC, could somebody tell me how the other two recasts fared? Were they really overwhelming success stories?

Judy Dewey didn't even last a year. Laura Malone was truly special and if you ever get to see any of the material from the show's lean periods, you'll see that she made the character. There was no Blaine without her. Most likely Blaine would have been going no matter what, as Chris Rich was leaving the show, but it still sucks.

That Nina was apparently loathed by fans, and lasted a year or less.

At least she'll always have this:

He was still there when last mentioned, in 1995.

I can see why that story would anger fans. I'm still a little shocked they wrote that for one of their major leads. I always assume there was some bad blood, although they did spend a year or so building the story up.

    • Thanks!   Was anyone watching during this time? Wondering how Peggy’s rape played out onscreen. It just seems cruel to subject the Brooks family to this trauma a 2nd time.   Feels like the writers have already given up on the character of Jennifer, even though she sticks around another year-plus. She should be a passionate and fierce protective mother, but instead she seems just reactionary (and not even mentioned in this recap) This was also the case in ‘73 when Chris was raped. The writers are definitely more invested Stuart as the Brooks parent.
    • BTG got another SNL reference at 00:50  CONTEXT (so it isn't misconstrued) in this joke swap segment, Michael Che frequently makes his white cohost Colin Jost read racist jokes written by Che.

    • It's obvious that Israel's presence is a major divisive issue, and this is something that the EBU needs to deal with. According to the now published results Israel got 13 out of a possible 19 max points in the semi-final, and while their song isn't bad there's no way they would get those numbers without some kind of manipulation/political voting. They are clearly using this contest as a way of improving their somewhat tarnished reputation. I know that some people are comparing this to the massive sympathy votes that Ukraine gets and which propelled them to victory in 2022, but I feel that that was a more genuine show of support than this concerted effort from Israel to influence the televoting. I even had an ad on Youtube from Israel in Swedish(!) asking for votes! It might not be against any rules, but it feels a bit icky nonetheless.
    • Yeah, as you wrote, an Israeli win would have been a political disaster. Congratulations to Austria. 0 points from the televoting to Switzerland was a disgrace. Other than that, I really enjoyed the show ... but I'm also glad that Eurovision season is over

    • Hahaha Sorry if I was too negative, I just started typing and typing once I got going hahaha
    • @dc11786 Thanks for taking time to answer my various questions, along with giving your thoughts on the different writing teams. I wonder why they didn't just have Ryder and TR leave together if Jane was going anyway. The discussions over the last few pages have made me more interested in watching these episodes than I have been over the years - without the extra details and analyses provided, these years can be difficult to decipher (not helped by how often Jo seems like a side character).
    • I didn't think this was very good (I've never yet seen a good episode of this revival), but you do get a lot of Michael Stroka. And if you are a Donna Reed Show fan, you also get Paul Petersen.

    • A very rare, fascinating look at camera blocking in a 1980 episode. Very loose, almost startlingly so (who expects to see Will Vernon with a cig dangling out of his mouth?). @vetsoapfan There's some Jacquie Courtney content in the back half of the video.

    • Thanks @Paul Raven  I concur that this isn't the most interesting material, but I do wish I could see how JoBeth Williams played those trial moments.
