I think Patsy officially went on medical leave, but this was it for Patsy in 1990 except her brief 2-episode phone call in December 1990. Then she was back in February 1991.

Anne Howard played the role from March 1990-August 1990 and came back again to fill-in during summer 1991.

Did Phyllis, Linda and Melissa have much to do during that time?  Was Pat Falken Smith still head-writing at that point?  If so, I wonder if she had it in mind to use Mary's strangling as a catalyst for bringing back the Andersons.

Yeah. This was the final weeks of PFS' run.

Melissa stayed. This was around the time Mickey and Maggie finally adopted her. She also had some kind of flirtation with Gwen Davies' long lost brother. After Mary died, she left Anderson to Phyllis and Melissa. Phyllis then sold her share to Stefano and Tony and left town.

I honestly would say this is Dee's best work (I do want to make a plastic surgery joke here but will refrain).  The aftermath was chilling and her breaking down on the stand telling Don she was raped is probably the best Marlena scene ever as far as acting.  My love for Marlena rivals my love for Brenda Barrett, but I do think at times Dee was underrated.  I think her OTT portrayal of Marlena in the last 25 years underscores the fact she does have actual ability.

Agree.  I know from my years of watching that DHall is capable of a lot more than what we've seen since the mid-'90's.  But I also know that the writing after her initial return has done neither Dee nor Marlena any favors.  The Dr. Marlena Evans Black of 2022 is in no way the same Dr. Marlena Evans Brady who took on the Salem Strangler and Stefano DiMera in the '80's.

Yeah.  I am definitely not saying she's the best actress to ever be on daytime, but there was something much more subtle about her portrayal.  She has some talent.  I just think Drake almost de-elevated her or she just gave up because her and John ham it up all the time.  And I know they are milking their fanbase with their nonsense, but DH could do a lot more.  I mean I just really assume she's like [!@#$%^&*] it at this point and cashes her check.

Do you hate the Tale of 2 Romans as much as I do?  Do you feel like it went on forever and explained nothing?  Do you think making John not Roman is one of the worst mistakes Days has ever made?  Do you find Isabella unbearably obnoxious?  Probably not, but these are all the things I think of when watching that crap story.  It's like Days had gold when they got Dee and Wayne back and that was the story choice.  Plus, they just decided to not use them for about a year until Marlena decided she wanted to [!@#$%^&*] John again.  I know there is a lot of talk about just writing a soap yourself if you hate things and I am not a writer, but I legit could have crafted a better return story for two icons in the early 90's.

No, she's definitely no Charity Rahmer.

DHogestyn is capable of delivering better performances as well, but I think he and Dee suffer from the same issues that plague most soap actors today: OTT writing and little (or no) direction.  Nothing will EVER save bad writing, but if you give a director more time to work with his/her actors, they can at least help them modulate their performances - here's a hint: the more OTT the writing, the smaller your performances should be - and find the emotional throughline in every scene.

Yes.

Yes.

In retrospect?  Yes.

YAAAAAAAAAS.  (But that's because I thought DHogestyn had better chemistry with Genie Francis.)

DHall made WN's return a condition of HER return, so unless they had chosen to bring him back as Roman's long-lost twin brother, I feel like the Tale of Two Romans was inevitable and unavoidable.  But, you're right, @carolineg, we could have done a MUCH better job writing it than the show did, lol.

The greatest tv series season finale in history.
    • Mick Savage was sooo unbearable. And more unbearable was the reaction from the female characters to him - they were acting like he is God's gift to women and sooo irresistible. To a point of unbelievable cringe.
    • Today was a short one. Only 33 minutes.  The ‘Part One’ graphic at the beginning was pretty interesting though. I didn’t expect them to do something like that.  I like how everything was focused around John and his family and friends. Again, the acting and the dialogue was very well done and well written. And I love that they were able to incorporate Drake’s, “swing for the fences” phrase into the script. It was nice seeing everyone interact with each other, especially characters who don’t often share scenes together. It felt like every character was part of a big family or community. Plus, an outdoor funeral in June makes a lot more sense than an outdoor funeral in December.  But yeah, it’s very, very strange that Will isn’t at the funeral, especially since we know that

I would much rather he had been there today. And, where’s Anna too? And Jack and Jennifer? What was the point of bringing them all back if they weren’t going to attend the funeral? I expected Steve to want to close down BlackPatch, though I’d rather he just retire and let Paul take it over. But I like that Kayla was there to comfort him. I wonder if he’s going to change his mind at some point.  It was nice seeing Shane again too. Now, he just needs to have more scenes with his son lol but I enjoyed seeing him comfort Marlena. I’m not really sure about his interaction with Cat though? Was it really necessary for this to happen now, at John’s funeral? They could’ve waited a little longer to introduce this story arc.  Btw, was Tate bleeding from his head in his first scene with Arianna?

    • Now this strikes me as funny. I have it up on my acct. The thing is I only have S2. Didn't want either 1 or 3.  Perhaps I should just list all of these that I have up.  Parodies: Dirty Sexy Money, Filthy Rich Incomplete: The Monroes, All That Glitters, Falcon Crest (have all just not all up), Once & Again S2 only Complete: Models Inc, Pasadena, Pacific Palisades, Paper Dolls, Flamingo Road
    • This is wonderful! Thank you for posting this! I loved the first two seasons and never got to see the final season when they cancelled the DVD release. I've been hoping this popped up on streaming but no luck. Happy I'll finally get to see how it ended!

    • In case it is of interest to anyone here, I have digital copies (computer files, mp4 etc.) of all of the episodes. And, besides having the files they are all up on my usual video hosting site, acct name: shallotpeel, channel it is in: Primetime Soaps and file names like  Flamingo Road S1E15 Hurricane Flamingo Road was a primetime soap on NBC by Lorimar Productions. 2 seasons. 1980-1982. Morgan Fairchild, Barbara Rush. Developed by Rita Lakin.
    • Arguably DAYS OF OUR LIVES has been brilliant lately & definitely was last week. But, here I am with nitpick & technicalities. This was the only misstep but it was just a stupid thing that should have been caught. Deidre Hall as Marlena has this one problematic line, "It didn't matter how many identities you had, I always knew exactly who you were, you were the man who saved my life." - Marlena, DAYS, 6-2-25 Unfortunately the flashback closest to it was when Marlena was on the phone, terrified because she thought he was Stefano. Yes, it's true that the line is not accurate. There were many times when she did not feel the way she is claiming because of whatever was going on in story with his 'retconned to hell & back' identity & origin story. Does it keep the whole week from being called excellent? Nope.
