Yea..it's funny, that is when I started tuning out...morose characters in morose storylines...all the fun of the first year of Marland died on the vine. ATWT for the rest of Marland's run was a slog to get through.  I don't mind a heavy storyline but it has to be balanced....and poor Woleck was just Holden 2.0 thought looking waaayy gayer..now he and would definitely have helped Hank get over "Charles" and THAT I would have tuned into see.."Andy, I don't really care about your whining, I got to go meet my dyed blonde muscle boy for some fun!"

Meanwhile GL had a balance of fun and heavy stories, family, etc and it had way lower ratings...go to show, you never can tell.

Well, tbh, Rattray didn't have romantic chem with anyone. I think he had to at least try to manufacture Lily/Holden chem, given the years of investment the show had in them. Granted, it was his fault ATWT was so heavily invested in Holden and Lily as a young lead couple, but still. It's not like Rosanna and Hutch were burning down the house.

I think that period of time had some of the strongest Lily/Holden stories in terms of writing (Angel's struggles, the Walsh takeover, Lily's miscarriage, The Truth About Aaron). Martha and Jon had more chemistry, but I never thought most of their stories together were that interesting, even with Marland there.

(I'm one of the few who never understood why Lily would choose Holden over Dusty)

You are definitely not alone in that regard, my friend. I am right there with you.

From a dramatic perspective, it looked like the primary soap trope of the “poor little rich girl” finds an irresistible attraction to the lower-income older, good looking guy from the margins of farm country (Luther’s Corner). Although, the writing chose to promptly forget that Dusty wasn’t exactly embedded in elite circles either. In fact, Dusty spent most of his formative years in deep instability, not even really having a stable home until John Dixon became his guardian. I wished that the writing had kept some of that fiery temperament that Dusty had  when he and Lily had first met but somehow, by the time that Lucinda’s biological daughter Sierra entered the landscape, Dusty had been made a stabilizing presence in Lily’s life to counteract the upheaval of Lily’s personal life. Then when Holden entered the canvas, the writing seemed to imbue his personality with many of the personality traits that once belonged to Dusty (restlessness, longing for something intangible, etc.), even though Holden was older and presumably more mature than Dusty.

I do think though that had Brian Bloom remained on the show (although one cannot blame Bloom for doing what other popular soap actors did at the same time-exercise their rights to pursue other opportunities), there probably would have been many more romantic turns with Lily and Dusty, for the simple fact that Lily never could make up her mind where a romantic relationship between her and Dusty or her and Holden were concerned.

There were some episodes of 1985 before Marland took over... where Lily/Dusty had that Romeo/Juliet type of situation with Lucinda not approving of him and Shannon/Sierra being the voice of reason for both Lily and Dusty.    It was a good story already and would have been an interesting way to start pairing Lucinda and John as a couple down the road.

I much preferred Heather R's Lily over Martha's Lily... though the period between 1993 and 1997 were good years for Martha playing Lily.

I agree, it was stronger writing, and I'd actually argue the writing shone more because it wasn't Byrne in the role. I think DM had a huge blind spot where MB was concerned, and stories usually tilted to "fix" things to make Lily's life easier. I mean, the Snyders had to "accept" Josh so Lily could get to know her father.

Rattray at least tried to be more mature in the role. Byrne would inevitably end up stomping and yell-crying through emotional scenes.

Linc was such a convoluted character it’s hard to remember his full history as he was all over the place for years. He tangled with Lily, had a very messy history with Julie, and later had affairs with Connor and Debbie. Lonnie McCullough was playing Linc when Linc was involved with Sharon Case’s Debbie and subsequently murdered by her father Ned.

Agreed. My opinion on Heather has changed over the years. Back then I couldn’t stand her but to see the material again I’ve softened a lot on Heather’s portrayal. Unfortunately the breaking point for me is how much whining Lily did by the fall of 1992 into very early 1993. MB could’ve gotten away with it but not HR. Major yikes.

I enjoyed those Lily years as well, mainly because I preferred Lily and Damian together but the triangle with Holden was well played, with Holden’s return being the best thing for Lily at a chaotic time for her.

    • Whoa. She should have fought like hell to get that. Was it the greatest show ever? No, but it had a fantastic cast and was practically guaranteed to last multiple seasons because of its star power. Could have certainly led to bigger and better things. If it had flopped she could have always gone back to soaps. Judith Light broke through on a sitcom where she was basically second banana to Tony Danza. That grew into a very busy and distinguished career. The woman is still regularly booked to this day.
    • I could understand her being frustrated by the fact that she'd been in the business 10+ years at that point, and probably couldn't even get in the door. But then again, she'd already gone out for pilot season once (that we know of) and she and  her agent knew a 35-ish woman had a very difficult time in Hollywood. I know she did a few guest spots, but other than Designing Women, nothing I saw--not even a Murder She Wrote, and that show had tons of ex-soapers on it. I mean, God bless Marilu Henner, but even having been on Taxi, she couldn't get arrested for years either.
    • I didn't rewatch that period, so I'm not really sure how much Bill is on. I recall something about him living at the boardinghouse. I think Van made Matt his guardian, and why she didn't name Josh would be a mystery to me, other than the HW decided they needed to keep Bill in Matt's sphere. Nola is also his aunt, although they don't know each other well, and Van wouldn't have trusted her anyway. There's Dinah---but she's unreliable. Billy gets out of jail around NYE.

    • That's on Kimmer. As someone posted above...she was offered roles in pilots but she would be part of an ensemble or supporting. She didn't want that so she came back to GL. I don't know what she thought would happen..someone offering her "Here's Kimmer!" or The "Zimmer Comedy Powerhouse Hour" variety show..but her housefrau fans did not have the same pull in HW as they did on the soaps. Forbes and Watros knew that you had to take small parts to get noticed ands start a career in primetime. I know she was in consideration for the wife in Evening Shade, but when you go up against Marilou Henner, the soap diva looses. I could see her frustrated in a role like that, where she has to be the understanding wife with a bit of sass, but she could have made it work, if it wasnt for her huge ego.  I think it would have been an issue haveing all the powerhouse comedy actors surrounding...(lets face it..Alice Ghostly woudl have wiped the floor with her...) but it would have been a good launching padd.
    • Oh good, so I don't have to wait too long haha. I'm glad she cares about seeing Bill graduate. I'm guessing I'm in for a bumpy ride between Bill and Matt, if he's going to be his caretaker? Who else could it be, maybe Josh?

    • Maeve makes a few sporadic appearances, but returns full-time the next spring/summer. She's back in time to see Bill and Michelle graduate, although she skulks around town and wasn't going to tell anyone she was alive. She comes back wearing this HUGE hat---which was a throwback to the old Vanesaa. lol.
    • Aww, yeah it's very heartbreaking and I mostly enjoyed the Nola/Vanessa scenes because they finally let their walls down and came together in a beautiful moment. So Nola was at the hospital already and bumped into Vanessa, who had MRI papers that fell out of her hand and Nola went down to pick them up and asked her what was going on. Later, Vanessa confided in her about her disease. Then, Nola told Zachary on the beach (he prodded her and already alluded to knowing something was going on with Van), and then Vanessa found out she told him and got a little upset. Now, however, Nola is strangely absent while everyone is mourning her death. I'm curious if Nola will actually tell people about her MRI results. I would assume so. Only Nola, Rick, Roger and Zachary know anything, although there is the MRI results letter from the mail that everyone has missed seeing at home. I'm sure it'll all come out at some point. But... I just saw the next episode and the opening already cut Vanessa out and added Dahlia and Zachary. I guess Maeve is gone for a long time

That will break my heart seeing the town continue to mourn her and assume she's dead. I can't wait to see her return though, and I have to imagine feelings will be torn between loving that she's alive and being very angry she did all of this. While I hate what Vanessa is doing, I'm happy to hear it's not totally against her character. I think you're right, had Henry still been around, she wouldn't put him through this. I'm still surprised she is with Bill, though. I get her feelings on Matt, because she wants him to move on, but still very heartbreaking. I'm glad this was Maeve's choice to have a break vs. being fired.    Interesting, so I'm curious to see who they eventually pair Phillip with. They're flirting with a Phillip/Annie pairing, but I'm not sure if they'll go that route with the Jeva drama, her growing pill addiction, and Rick's past with her.  Ugh, yeah I'm so sad to see Bridget do a total 180 in the last couple weeks. She has always been a strong character from what I've seen, but now she's just bending over backwards to get Hart to love her and it reeks of desperation. Yeah, sure, this new Hart is eye candy, but I'm already tired of seeing Hart/Dinah have sex all over Springfield and the Cayman Islands haha.
    • Yes.  I remember them together during the early summer of 1986.  They didn't share scenes again for 30 years until 2017 because Carrie wasn't on the show when Anna returned during Sydney's kidnapping.
