Thanks to @YRfan23 for finding this and having the right date. From about 1 hour and 29 minutes on you have a partial episode from May 25, 1992. Mostly focused on the fallout of Scott being revealed as Lisa's son. My favorite scene in it is probably the brief scene where Andy tries to joke about Frannie living in luxury, only for her to become defensive - one of the few times that Frannie feels a bit more human and less like a plot device.

@DramatistDreamer there is also a jazzy version of the theme in the Margo/Lisa airplane scene. I'm not sure I've heard it before (probably have and just forgot). I think you noticed a different version of the theme in a 1986 episode too.

@DRW50^^That theme sounds like it could be the same saxy variation on the ATWT used years ago, in the 80s, except in this scene the music is fainter, as if an echo, I guess the situations are completely different, so they tweaked the versions to suit the mood.

Was Joseph Breen cast because they wanted a Gregg Marx clone?  I just noticed the resemblance, particularly in hair and styling.

Comparing ATWT to GL at this time..the show was so damn stuffy.  I love Bob and Tom having drinks in their suit and ties like it was 1972, (Holmes makes Tom such a prig in this) and while I love them finally deal with the fact that Lisa used to be a bitch on wheels...Tom as a kid kind of knew it as she left him to be raised by Nancy and Chris for a while. Lyla has a lot of nerve with her attitude after her own lying for years about parentage (usually Marland was better with  history) and isnt Oakdale in driving distance to Chicago?? A big plane flys from Chicago to Central Illinois.

True, which made it unfortunately easy to go off the rails, but I do remember around this time I just got fed up with Marland's ATWT while GL was going great guns.  He was so good at plot and structure, and usually history, I just wish he had someone to give the show energy and fun. Oakdale is a damn earnestly boring place there.

I think it was missing a young dynamic female character, similar to Meg or Melanie Smith's Emily. Around this time, other than Tess (who was not a main character and wasn't around that long), you had a lot of dull and cloying younger women.

I would have recast Emily earlier and found a better actress than KMH. I also would have cast another actress as Sabrina and emphasized a harder edge to the character during the Tonio storyline. The storyline shouldn't have been as much about the quiet and solemn daughter being lured from her family by a creep living out his hero-of-Montega years, it should have been about a broken woman who had never really felt loved or accepted questioning her life and becoming more aggressive in her actions, even if it put her in conflict with Bob and Kim. I think they also should have expanded one of the younger women we saw floating around Oakdale in this period - Kira, maybe, or different handling of the nice-but-forgettable roles like the Native American girl who boarded with Lyla.

Even though ATWT was my show I thought GL was a better show in the late 70s and early 80s. GL became real fluff in 1986 and IMO never regained that edge/spark it once had. ATWT became the better soap and was reflected in the ratings. I really can't point a finger as to why GL veered off. I could've been that a quite few of characters were fluff.

If GL had the more dynamic stories during that time, ATWT certainly had the more dynamic young cast because their actors were ALWAYS leaving! It's certainly good for the actors but bad for the show.  Imagine having to write around that level of instability. Regardless of what people think about Meg Ryan nowadays, she was probably not easy to replace. Imagine having to replace Julianne Moore!  Gregg Marx was part of a supercouple when he left. And TPTB were likely relieved when HBS and Marx clicked, having replaced another highly popular couple in Margaret Colin and Justin Deas.

    • The whole town gushing over John Black as if he was a saint is eye rolling.  I guess death really colors people's memories over his many flaws, but I guess that is normal and human nature. I'm still confused as to why Leo hasn't been written out.  The actor stank up two soaps with his sub par acting, what does he have on TPTB's to remain on these soaps.   What's the point of Cat?  I hope the new head-writers figure out her purpose and develop her character. And I much prefer scenes not focusing on John's death because life does go on for the world when someone passes.
    • Wasn't there a break in Zaslow's first run? I thought Roger was off-screen for a while, and when Zas came back, Roger was hiding at the boarding house and Nola figured out there was something hinkey about him. I'm pretty sure Simon chose to leave the first time and was replaced by RVV. I don't want to assume Jordan's issues played a role in his first departure, but Maeve said in an interview that at some point, it became very hard for her to work with him and she asked to work with him less. That seems to fit 1986, where suddenly Vanessa is essentially Ross' law clerk and not at every Lewis family moment.
    • He needs to divorce her arse with her constant cheating.   She's no better than Doug... she's F*cking pathetic.
    • I didn't know of any interruptions for Maeve Kinkead after her 1997 return. Her runs would then be 1981-1987, 1989-1996, 1997-2000, short arcs until the end. I knew Maureen Garrett second run was interrupted from a 2009 interview but I couldn't recall the exact year. Her runs would then be 1976-1980, 1988-2000, short arcs until the end.
    • As I said in May, I have no problem with Martin and Bradley being married. You can still do all the fun introloper storylines with them as you do everyone else. Both men of a certain age, and it is very believable for them to have either a first love or have been previously married. And, you can do it without either of them cheating!

I said something similar during the premiere week. Bill was the perfect age to play Martin as Vernon and Anita's child. I would've much preferred this version, but oh well.
    • I don't know how you want to count Maeve. She "retired" in '00, but would come back for appearances. I don't know however if she made an appearance in '01 or '03. In '02 I believe she came back for Josh and Reva's wedding. I assume she came back when Gina Tognoni took over the role of Dinah. And I know she was back for Ross' memorial service. Maureen Garrett was around until at least '00. I don't think Holly was in town when Ben returned though. I just got pissed off about Jerry all over again.
    • So, pretty sure Zaslow, Garrett, Kinkead, and Newman all chose to leave the first time. (If that's wrong, please correct me). Bernau - not sure why he left the first time. Was it voluntary? Or did they decide to write him out? They were writing so many out during that time period. It always seemed odd to me that they introduced Alex, FINALLY giving him someone he could talk to, and then he was written out. Or maybe that's why they made Alex his sister, so she could take his place as the head of the Spaulding family? Would love more intel on that if anyone knows. Simon - was he replaced by RVV? Or did he voluntarily leave the first time? It seems to me like one of those times TPTB decided to sex up or glamorize a character (and it clearly flopped). If he was fired, interesting he came back. Again, would love if someone could spill the tea. Clarke - I've always assumed he left because of his personal issues, but not sure if that was the case the first time.
    • So Doug just leaves Vanessa there with Joey? He's a f*cking loser. Vanessa needs to divorce his arse
