The Oprah Winfrey Show

I was totally thinking about those clips of teary Jenny on the stand too, she really was hit super hard by it and I wouldn't have been at all surprised if that had been the end of her show. I'm glad that it wasn't, some industry folk are so quick to shut down an operation for guilt by association, "Dammage control, dammage control!". I can understand the family's pain, but who would imagine that someone would have such a terrible reaction. I'm sure all involved assumed the guy would laugh it all off (and maybe the poor deceased was hoping for a little more? ). I'm sure he thought the guy was on the level if he brought him on the show, God, how awful.

Oh man, TCP is EPIC, it just is, one of those movies I cannot help but flip back and forth to when it's on, I'm always in the mood for it. So quotable and visually stunning. Deserved more Academy recognition than it got, but who cares, it is a modern American classic and that's worth more than awards. I still have a VHS copy from 1986 that one of my late mother's white co-workers gave to her for Christmas with a little inscription on the label. :(

What Are You Listening To?:

Git it Tata!

It was interesting to read in Donald Bogle's book about how controversial the film was, especially in portrayals of black men. I guess this is a common criticism though, of a lot of different types of films (I read one blasting Tyler Perry's new film for this issue).

And that's probably the biggest problem about Hollywood making so few films about people of color/marginalized groups... when they do make one, it has to be everything to everybody. And that's just not fair. TCP is a story, but not THE story of the black experience, and yet, it is A black experience. It's hard (impossible) to come up with any sort of black male hero in these films, but then look at all of the roles Misters Poitier and Washington have had to play. Then of course there was the controversy of a white Jewish director being at the helm of this story. I think he did it justice, it was emotionally and visually stunning, and yes, some stuff was cut/softened, but we don't know that that was Steven. At any rate, very smply put, if there were more black movies to begin with, I don't think as many feathers would have been ruffled.

I enjoyed today's show of Oprah featuring the cast of "The Color Purple". It was nice seeing them reunited with each other. I think that Akousa Busia (Nettie) and Margaret Avery who played Shug both looked good. And I thought that it was interesting how both Oprah and Whoopi each thought that the other one had an issue with them. But how that turned out not to be true and they were able to reconnect with each other.

TCP musical that Oprah produced was a huge hit also and it would have been great if she had incorporated that cast into the show as well.

The rumor of Oprah and Whoopi's feud is longstanding so it's surprising that they simply disconnected because they thought the other had a beef with them.

Ray Dawn Chong looks fantastic! Would love to see her in a current project.

Yes, I would love to see all of them in more projects. Margaret Avery would be great on All My Children. I also thought they'd give Tata vega a shoutout, but they did play her singing throughout.

At any rate, I LOVED today's episode, I wish it was 2 hrs. long. I found myself kind of tuning out the clips from the movie because they always get me all caught up, just seeing and hearing them all after 25 years was more than enough. The Whoopi/Oprah segment was really touching. If I may offer my two cents, I think the "beef" came from folks' reactions to Whoopi's reactions when asked about Oprah. Whoopi doesn't kiss ass and she isn't going to kowtow to the great name of Oprah and act like O is somehow greater than when asked about her, "What was it like seeing the meteoric rise of Oprah out of YOUR movie, TCP?" or what have you. It's like when Star asked Whoopi about filling Rosie's and Meredith's shoes. She wasn't playing that. She said something to the effect of, "I have my own shoes... their shoes will be there [gesturing to the side, honoring their place in the show's history], and I'll bring my own." It may come across as arrogance but I think Whoopi's just one of those people who would rather not play fake humility for the cameras and for the sake of other peoples' egos.

I saw that yesterday and with OWN in L.A., I wondered why. But then with O Magazine in the city, her best friend Gayle in Greenwich, even one of her network's hosts, Rosie, in Westchester, maybe that's why she's looking to acquire a permanent tristate area residence. My other question is why so damn big?? I really don't think Oprah travels with THAT much of an entourage actually, but maybe it's more of a tax issue. I just cannot imagine having and maintaining a house the size of the one she has in Montecito plus another one of that size on the opposite coast (I know she wouldn't be the first). And I'm not even talking about money, of course that's not an issue, but it all seems mentally taxing to me to have these huge homes to be responsible for and not know what's going on inside every little room, leaving them empty even from time to time. Plus she has other homes (the Chicago penthouse, and I believe she has or had ranches in suburban Illinois/Indiana/Wisconsin, property in Hawaii  ... I guess you could say she has people to worry about these things for her, but that little incident at her school in Africa, anyone?).

The shoulders and sleeves are too tight. He'd benefit from a larger size. The yellow arrows show where the shoulder cut should actually be placed in my opinion. I don't mind the granpa fashion per se, I just have an OCD with sizes LOL
    • Today May 11, 2025, Pope Leo briefly addressed the crowd in the square.  He sang the prayer to Mary and then said:   Dear brothers and sisters, The immense tragedy of the Second World War ended eighty years ago, on 8 May, after having claimed sixty million victims. In today’s dramatic scenario of a piecemeal third world war, as Pope Francis stated many times, I too address the world’s leaders, repeating the ever-timely appeal: “Never again war!”. I carry in my heart the sufferings of the beloved Ukrainian people. May everything possible be done to reach an authentic, just and lasting peace, as soon as possible. Let all the prisoners be freed and the children return to their own families. I am deeply saddened by what is happening in the Gaza Strip: may there be an immediate ceasefire! Let humanitarian aid be provided to the stricken civil population, and let all the hostages be freed. On the other hand, I have welcomed with satisfaction the announcement of the ceasefire between India and Pakistan, and I hope that through the upcoming negotiations, a lasting accord may be reached soon. https://www.vatican.va/content/leo-xiv/en/angelus/2025/documents/20250511-regina-caeli.html
    • Lol! I'm quite sure it would.
    • But that is pretty much situation normal for all soaps. They do not tend to continue to show things like surgical scars. They also play fast & loose with hospital procedures.
    • re: prior two posts about Trump's new opulent plane contrasted with utter starvation in Gaza... Trump and Netanyahu are giving "Let them eat cake".  And it's horrific. In 2013, Pope Francis removed a bishop from running the Limburg Germany diocese because he was constructing an opulent 31-million-euro building. This is from Reuters obit of Francis: https://www.reuters.com/world/obituary-pope-francis-shook-up-church-with-simplicity-raising-conservative-ire-2025-04-21/ From the start, Francis sent clear signals to priests and bishops about the type of Church he wanted. He said there was no room for "careerists or social climbers" among the clergy, told cardinals they should not live "like princes," and said the Church should not "dissect theology" in lush salons while there were poor people around the corner. "If investments in banks fall, it is a tragedy and people say 'what are we going to do?' but if people die of hunger, have nothing to eat or suffer from poor health, that's nothing. This is our crisis today. A Church that is poor and for the poor has to fight this mentality," he said early in his papacy. -- Pope Francis stood up for the poor, the unhoused, the migrants of all faiths.  He lived simply and ordered that when he died, that he wished to be interred in a simple wooden coffin. I sincerely hope that the new pope Leo will follow Francis' example.
    • Co Sign!!!!   I have been watching the show regularly over the last few weeks and am pleasantly surprised by how much easier it is to watch each day. This definitely is confirmation for me that Paula and Jeanne wrote the stroke episodes, cause I felt the same way watching those. Could be more exciting for sure, but interactions now make more sense and everything seems to be a bit more character driven which is great. I will add though, there are still about 10 or so characters i'd love to see gone, and hope a few will exit in the future! Otherwise, happy with the changes so far.
    • Sean Freeman looks good in anything. Would not change one thing. Arielle Prepetit looking cute.

    • There is suffering everywhere you look, says mother of emaciated baby girl trapped in Gaza https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/czrv5rl73zdo Quoting excerpts from BBC article: The baby's mother Najwa, 23, is changing Siwar's nappy. She weighs just over 2kg (4lb 6oz). A baby girl of five months should be around or over 6kg. "There was no food when I gave birth to her," says Najwa. "If I wanted to feed myself so I could breastfeed her, I had no nutrients to make my health better... She now only drinks formula milk, and we don't know how we'll be able to provide it for her." Israel has banned international journalists from entering Gaza to report independently. According to Siwar's doctor, Ziad al-Majaida, "Nothing enters through the borders, no milk, food or anything. This leads to big problems here for the kids. This baby needs a specific type of milk. It was available before, but because of the border closure, the stocks have run out for a while now." Since the beginning of the year, according to the UN, about 10,000 cases of acute malnutrition among children have been identified. Food prices have rocketed by as much as 1,400%. Charity kitchens, which have helped hundreds of thousands of Gazans, are shutting as food supplies run out. Twenty-five bakeries supported by the World Food Programme have been forced to close. Israel cut off all humanitarian aid and other supplies from entering Gaza on 2 March, and resumed its military offensive two weeks later The United Nations has said the Israeli blockade constitutes "a cruel collective punishment" on civilians. The UN's humanitarian director, former British diplomat Tom Fletcher, said that international law was unequivocal. "As the occupying power, Israel must allow humanitarian support in... Aid, and the civilian lives it saves, should never be a bargaining chip," he warned. From the BBC reporter: I put this point to Boaz Bismuth, a leading member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party. He (Bismuth) denies there is an aid crisis caused by the blockade. "There is food in Gaza... Israel wouldn't do such a restriction if the population didn't have food. I mean, I know my country perfectly well," he (Bismuth) said. BBC reporter: I put it to Bismuth that he was denying the evidence of people's eyes, that children were starving. "There are not starving children. I repeat again." He (Bismuth) said that there had been allegations months ago of famine, ethnic cleansing and genocide in Gaza "which was crap". ----  ----  ---- A UK-based advocacy group for Israel has the nerve to claim war may reduce obesity in Gaza https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/may/10/uk-lawyers-for-israel-condemned-over-claim-war-may-reduce-obesity-in-gaza
