Great Women of Soaps

Seeing this latest trend in best/worst threads, I thought to start my own.

Who are some of your favourite daytime divas, those bigger-than-life, magnetic, super stylish femmes fatales of daytime? It can be anyone from a long-forgotten guest star in the '70s to the main female protagonist on the show. Villainess, fairy godmother, the characters ethics and morality are not the point.

And not to forget: is there a particularly soapy name of a female character you like? Like e.g. Dominique Deveraux (not daytime, but hey), Angelique DuVal, Helena Cassadine, those French/Italian/German/Greek sounding names, that sort of thing.

:)

P. S. If a mod could change the b in the title to a capital, I'd be grateful.

^^ Oh, AMEN to that!! Kate Roberts is the ultimate survivor -- she escaped her abusive husband essentially barefoot and pregnant, then worked her way from the ground up to the top of Titan. The tragedy was that she had to leave Austin and Billie behind, which must have been devastating. Even when she played Musical Husbands, there was definitely a feeling that, if the marriage fell through, Kate would still land on her feet, thanks to her brains.

I quite love her marriage to Stefano at the moment. It's like a meeting of equals, something I didn't expect as Stefano essentially married her to save her ass from jail. I also like it when she gets all Mama Bear with Will and Chad.

DF, that shot of EJ looking at Kate. Now *that* is a SL I can get behind.

Oh, and I love Anna Stuart's Donna. There's this one scene I recall where she's getting dressed up for some event. She has Bridget bring in a bunch of outfits, and she holds up the cuffs with buttons against her ears, so she can best decide which earrings to wear. Donna Love was the most feminine of the Stylish, Magnetic Women on soaps.

Here's a scene from '92 between Donna and Rachel (Donna in her fake Chanel, lol). Marley & Jamie cancelled their wedding, so Donna offered to help Rachel to call around to all the guests on the list to break the news. They curl up on Rachel's couch and Donna admits to Rachel that she has always been envious of her.

I just love Kate, she is a truly underrated character played by a truly underrated actress in Lauren Koslow. DAYS is the only show that seems willing to write a glamorous, powerful, intelligent and sexual role for a woman in her 50s, it's a real credit to the show that they realized their Stylish, Magnetic Woman in Daytime, Mrs Kate Roberts Dimera, has worth and is a vital character. She exudes energy. My favourite character on DAYS, ever.

I too love her marriage with Stefano, killer chemistry between Mascolo and Koslow and in actual fact, I think it's the most authentic relationship on the show. Stefano and Kate 'get' one another, they understand each other and they accept each other, just as they are.

DaytimeFan & Cat.... i am so... let down by this Kate love.

I just... i cant even.

Explain your distaste young man!

This made me LOL. We have managed to rob jp of the power of typewritten speech.

jp, I know you hate Kate, but didin't you say recently that you didn't mind her so much now that she is a DiMera? Maybe I imagined that.

How did I not comment on Anna Stuart's Donna Love? I absolutely loved Donna with her fake Chanel (good catch Cat!), gracious manner and ballsy attitude. How could you not love that character, she survived!

Except for that one brief time when she was thrown outta the house (after Victor?) and was slingin' hash alongside Faye Walker at the diner. And then she had blood running from outta her vah-jay-jay, which seemed to clear up as soon as she had money again.

But again, Kate survived. She found a job, a crappy job, but a job none the less.

The story with Kate having bleeding was meant to be a lot bigger, there were some scenes involving Kate and Roman talking about health insurance and how Kate didn't have any...but that story got nixed after a few sponsors complained.

Yeah, it definitely seemed like a re-write. I wonder what the sponsors' issues were.

Well, Kate was experiencing the hell of not having health insurance in America, the only Western country where you're absolutely fucked if you don't have health insurance and are sick.

DAYS, like all soaps, has its share of insurance and pharmaceutical companies as sponsors. Kate's storyline painted the situation in a critical light, the same type of storyline was attempted at Y&R with Raul's diabetes, but it too got the shaft.

How dare these shows try to portray what millions of Americans struggle with! Bring on the possessed baby alien clones instead!

Indeed. God forbid soaps actually be relevant -- or even ahead of the curve as some once were in the 60s and 70s. That might actually bring in viewers.
