@dc11786   I don't know if it was during ConWest or not but there was one Bruce Barry directed love scene where his forearm covered the only part of her we didn't see. She appeared to be naked. They were each in black underwear, earlier. They ended up on the floor. She was with Alan, who was in the hospital & Phillip came to her & he talked & then she didn't let him leave.

Also not sure if this is anything you're talking about. I believe it also to be Bruce Barry & there's a series of them & they are very good.

With Beth C. you're not talking about when she was Lorelei, are you?

ConWest was also Eden & Ben Reade nightmare, right?

Brown and Esensten revealed months in advance about the direction Holly was going to take. In an interview in early 1998, they indicated that Holly would become obsessed with baby Maureen and kidnap her. Somewhere along the way, they morphed it into the nursery rhyme stalker storyline.

Well, the Carruthers storyline called into question serious wrong-doing by 5 adult male veterans. And, it wasn't true. It was a gigantic lie. Of course, you have to understand that Weston wasn't really a qualified experienced writer. I never understood why she was hired or why she had an extra year on her contract that he did not.

That is the scene. That is Conboy with Taggart and Culliton writing. Conboy took over mid-December if I recall. I want to say the same week Marj Dusay started appearing as Alexandra again. I believe Taggert and Culliton´s last episodes were the end of February when the bomb went off in the studio.

I was making a bad joke about Chamberlain was more effective in a supporting role post-Lorelei. In particular, there was a scene about October/November, 2003, where Lizzie was pouting because she was cast as the Nurse in ¨Romeo & Juliet¨ and Beth explains to her daughter the significance of the role and, in essence, explains where she is herself in life. There were other scenes, but this one stood out.

Conboy and Weston had Ben working as an escort for Eden, but Eden was a Taggart creation or a Gold/Dunn/Taggart creation. I think Taggart and Culliton may have written Eden out in their last few episodes, but Weston brought her back. I thought the initial escort angle made sense. Ben was broke and most of his stories with Matt Bomer in the role had a seedy undertone to them. I thought the serial killer storyline was fine as I hadn´t watched Ben grow up so it meant little to me. I thought the sexual abuse angle made sense for who Ben had been since returning to Springfield (placing bets on Marah´s virginity, going out with an underage Marina). I just wish it hadn´t been revealed in context of a serial killer storyline.

Nowadays, I think having a character like Ben Reade becoming an internet sex worker would be an interesting twist on an old tale, but I just don´t see any of the current shows handling that kind of story well.

I believe the period of Conboy producing Taggart and Culliton episodes was December 26, 2002-February 21, 2003. It is a very good two months.

This episode features a sequence that I remember was fairly well regarded at the tiime. After months of being deceived her then husband Alan, Olivia learns everything that her husband has been up to, including changing her birth control pills. Agreeing to meet with Alan on a secluded island, Olivia lays all her cards on the table. The final line of the episode, I believe, typically found itself in the favorite dialogue threads on this boards for the next several years.

I think the last official episode they were credited was the 28th with the bomb going off during the call in show. I remember exactly where I was when I figured out that the Conboy era was going to go straight to hell. I was at a Safeway looking through a copy of SOD and saw that Maureen Garrett was being taken off contract. Rauch for all of the negative things about him always stood up for Holly and Blake/Ross being on contract. And with Holly finally getting more screen time in early 2003 and then that news, I know my enjoyment of the show was going to drop. I just don't think I correctly estimated by how much. The late 2002/early 2003 episodes were the best period of GL that I watched live and I wish like hell it could have continued. I really think the show might have been saved if it had and that's the tragedy.

I have a hunch and I've never been able to prove it, but I think the Maryanne Carruthers story is probably a David Kreizman idea. Besides her brief role on the show as an actress in the 60s she didn't seem to have a real working knowledge of the history of the show. Considering how many past stories that arc ripped off, it would have had to come from someone with at least a working knowledge of the show.

Kreizman had been with the show since 94 and showed in his own tenure that he did know the shows history even if his execution was just at the level of really bad fan fiction.

I was thinking about this & I think she was far less experienced & I can't think of others who were so inexperienced who were plopped down in the HW chair! You may disagree with me, but if you do, who in the world might you be thinking of who went from almost no experience, or very very little, to being HW of a show?

This probably has nothing to do with anything but there have always been rumors that they were each other's beards.

This is the first I'm hearing of people loving this period so much with Conboy already on base. It's interesting to hear discussion of from more veteran fans; I may have to go back and look at it again. I just remember the Conboy/Weston regime that followed being utterly deranged in a new way, as bad as Rauch's excesses yet somehow even worse. On a side note I'd really thought Claire Labine would work out at the show, it's too bad she didn't.

The MAC/Annabelle Sims story, from both decades, is ultimately just a farfetched, kludged-together ripoff of Peter Straub's horror classic book and film Ghost Story, which came out shortly before the original take on the storyline in the '80s. I couldn't believe they were ripping off the same storyline twice, both times clumsily retconning all the elder male characters as having known each other long ago when it just did not work. I do think Kreizman had some good ideas early on - a Roger revisit with Holly, an Ed return, Jonathan - but it was clear he had no ability to execute (and the Sebastian story became a nightmare).

And, what a nightmare for her, the experience she went through there. To begin, everything she pitched got shot down. She pitched a Holly/Olivia love story. And, in the final analysis, she was heard to say that the only thing she wrote while she was there, that she personally liked, was Mae the cigarette girl, in Danny's awful after hours club, do you recall? And, then, they fired her & her family. But, for whatever reason Paul couldn't get anyone to come take the reins so he called her & asked her if they would come back. ... And, she did. Oy vey y'all.

What a nightmare, indeed!

    • I know we have discussed the fact that Another World seemed to be planning a location shoot in Finland that got cancelled. I came across this item from the syndicated Soapbox column published June 14, 1982. "Soap operas have been experimenting extensively with on-location shooting in recent years to enhance storylines and increase their viewing audience. A major drawback is the added production costs involved. Another World, for example, cancelled a special trip for Victoria Wyndham (Rachel Cory on the show), who was scheduled to shoot scenes in Finland. The producers felt that the high price tag, along with resentment of the cast members who also wanted to travel but were to be left behind. was enough to scrap the whole project."
    • A few more thoughts about these last two episodes. I thought it was interesting how much disdain both Dani/Anita have for Eva. I thought it was amusing how Dani was calling her lying/conniving and how Anita pointed as if to say, "that part". They definitely are not here for her, and I could see them having harsh confrontations with her in addition to Leslie. I'm curious to see Kat's interaction with Eva on Monday's episode. I think it might be interesting if Kat (along with possibly Naomi/Chelsea) come around to Eva before Dani/Anita do. Of course, Kat will be understandably angry at her. But maybe a tiny part of her might feel sorry for her if she really does believe that she's Ted's daughter as well and that Leslie lied to her. I could see Kat confronting Eva again and warning her not to harm her family anymore. But I could also possibly see Kat admitting that what Ted/Leslie did regarding her was messed up as well. And maybe that will pave the way down the line for them to get along better. I also agree with the comments/speculation made in the threat that Nicole will eventually accept/probably love her someday as well. I still wouldn't mind if somehow Nicole ended up being her biological mother. They have both been acting like they care for each other in this storyline. Nicole somehow ending up being her mother would be soapy and provide some more interesting layers in this story. And regarding Andre/Dani's romance it seems like they are genuinely developing feelings for each other. I have missed episodes, so maybe more of this has been elaborated on. But it seemed like there was genuine affection between both of them when they snuck a kiss publicly in the hotel. And also, them both talking about going publicly with their relationship. I wonder what everyone's reactions will be should they be caught by someone together. Of if they flat out tell everyone about their relationship.
    • I was wondering what week it was, and it explains the low rating for Knots Landing. I was also wondering what preempted Dallas and Falcon Crest.
    • Interesting take on Dallas. Frankly I think the plot of JR Returns should have been the way Dallas ended but for whatever reason they thought they had the chance to get renewed for another season lol. A week later Knots’ 2 hour season finale ranked at #10 against Cheers #3 and LA Law at #5. There’s only a handful of other shows running that long and still doing well enough the ratings/rankings i.e. Gunsmoke, Law & Order, NCIS, Grey’s Anatomy and more recently Blue Bloods.    Another point of interest is the unraveling of the 80’s sitcoms had already begun in the spring of ‘91. The first part of a Who’s The Boss? two part season finale we see here ranked at  #40 and second part ranked at #43 the following week. Growing Pains finale the previous week barely made it into the Top 30. The Wonder Years fared no better. Cosby losing ground, Night Court and Dear John just being there etc.

I haven't posted in a few weeks and have some catching up to do. But I did manage to look at the last two episodes after hearing about how good they were. I really enjoyed them. My thoughts on them: The affair/secret child reveal was very good. TMG was really good as Leslie, her whole confrontation with Ted/revealing all to the Duprees was very entertaining. I continue to love AM/Eva. She my top two favorites on the show (along with Nicole). I have a lot of sympathy for Eva and how she was conflicted/ultimately felt guilty about publicly revealing the truth to everyone. I wonder what will happen to her next, especially if she does go and live with the Doctor that is friends with Ted and Nicole. I lol'ed at how Martin/Smitty jumped up and grabbed Leslie when Eva was calling her crazy. The way they did that was funny to me. I haven't liked many of Martin's actions/his attitude especially regarding Smitty/his children, but I think it was interesting how he wanted to check Ted for his actions. And also wanted Bill to be questioned/confronted about his as well. I haven't been the biggest fan of the character of Andre, but I appreciated his calm and measured approach after the reveal and how he talked with Eva. I thought it was interesting that he knew about the affair and convinced Ted not to tell Nicole. Speaking of Nicole, I continue to love her character and view her as the heart of this show/Dupree family. I am interested in seeing where her journey goes as a character after this reveal. I'm looking forward to her leaning on Dani and (also Anita/Vernon, etc...) for a change.

    • Lol.  I love that this board still allows misinformation from a bad source.
    • Thanks @kalbir what a time to have enjoyed the peak of the primetime soaps. Haha you’re good. The only complaint I have with Lorraine’s death as I mentioned recently in the FC thread was it was overkill, and all we got Apollonia. If a pregnant woman had to be killed off, I would’ve chosen just killing off Robin instead in some freak accident or in the explosion at Richard’s to save us from us that disaster lol.    Did Hotel have a cliffhanger that year? I imagine if Hotel had been soapier we would’ve had cliffhangers like the hotel catching on fire or bombed by an ex-lover of Christine. Peter pisses everyone off and is shot in his office. Or a major Golden age star like a Olivia de Havilland shows and tells how she originally owned the Hotel and how Victoria Cabot & Laura Trent stole it from her but now she owns it etc.
    • The whole AMC 2.0 pulled it together in mere weeks to get a show up and running, with scripts and a cast.

Ginger Smith seemed really passionate about being in the executive producer position, and I think she really did a fantastic job in six weeks. It was just well done.
