I want to know why the misogyny and the emotional sadomashochism is running rampant on this show? Why there are no strong young women left on the show? Why everyone's an idiot, except for K and Nina? You can be plot drien and have shock value and still have none of these things going on. Look at Julia raping Jack on ATWT, even though she had become this larger than life character, she was never the victim like Mary Jane is quickly becoming.

Oh, and I wanted to also ask if Lily loved those Hitchcock movies because they featured shallow ditzes with no personality? Hitchcock loved beating his women down. :/

He's not doing it bc he hates her; its bc he's in lust with her. Yeah this is something he would do....7 years ago. He hasnt seen her in years so it makes no sense why now all of a sudden he's back doing this crazy scheme to win her over. They were never a couple and she never recipricated any love. What I find even dumber is why Amber is letting herself be blackmailed. Why not just tell Daniel that Deacon once was obsessed with her and he is the fatehr of the boy she raised as a son. I dont see why this is even a secret.

I think Julia was played for shock and laughs. Hogan wanted us to wonder what would happen next as Julia raped a man and killed animals. I think he probably wanted the same for Mary Jane but with MAB and Rauch and Hamner around, the show does not have that campy air his ATWT writing had, so she is just more pathetic. I also think the plans for MJ changed somewhere along the line because of bad viewer reaction to the way Sharon was being written. This sudden bond between Sharon and Phyllis is difficult to believe and seems like a way to keep the triangle in place. Now Phyllis and Sharon are both liars, and mentally feeble, but they're presented as poor victims who are just doing what they can for Nick's precious children. Then eventually when MJ is gone, Phyllis will probably go back to the dark side, and we'll get more of what we got earlier this year. Unhinged Phyllis contrasted against sweet, precious Sharon who needs a man to help her, and whose grief means she can't stop sleeping around.

Any show with Hamner, Rauch, and Sheffer is going to be sadistic and have views of women as being all about men, all about babies, mentally unbalanced.

They aren't even pretending Lily's cancer is about anything other than men. I don't want to see Dru return because of what would be done to her, but more than ever I miss her presence in stories like this which should be about the pain a woman is going through and her struggles to survive, not about a woman's overbearing/creepy father and brother or about her waiting for Cane to be her hero.

Not gonna deny the misogyny on Y&R or Hitchcock's work. But Hitchcock's women all shallow ditzes with no personality? Oh, far from it! Undercover Ingrid Bergman in Notorious, feisty Madeleine Carroll in The 39 Steps, Grace Kelly in Rear Window (she does all the detective work while James Stewart is stuck in a wheelchair!) and To Catch a Thief, secret agent Eva Marie Saint in North By Northwest, even prankster Tippi Hedren in The Birds... all those women, while demurely dressed, had balls, brains and sexiness. Not like the passive Mischa Bartons and Megan Foxes of today.

Sorry. Just had to put in my $0.02.

Thank you for the translation. I really liked the idea of that final scene. But because I have never seen or (I confess) heard of Gilda, I missed something.

I guess I need to watch it now...

I knew someone was gonna bring up Grace Kelly in Rear Window lol. But that wasn't one of the movies mentioned in yesterday's episode lol. It was North by Northwest and Vertigo. That female lead (I cannot remember her name) and Bel Geddes, who pined after Jimmy's character for some unknown reason, were two women written in Vertigo with very little respect. They were like children, as was the case for Bel Geddess's character or simply not real, in Novak's case.

And I hated North by Northwest so I can't recall Saint's role as readily but she wasn't nearly as revered as Kelly is in just about all of Hitchcock's films.

The crazy thing is. These films were done when chauvinism and misogyny were the norm. It's the [!@#$%^&*] 21st century and these girls still pine after men who don't deserve it and who have no career goals or self-respect. K is the only woman left who represents that it seems, Chloe to a lesser extent.

So agree and I'm glad you brought up the historical context because I edited that from my previous post. :) We cannot always compare today's standards with, say, 1955-1965 when women were expected to look and act like delicate hothouse flowers.

In some ways, I'm glad that I grew up in the 80s and 90s because at least I had female "role models" like Debbie Harry, Alexis Colby, Brenda Walsh (lol -- c'mon, she was fierce. "I hate you! Never talk to me again!!"), Madonna and Buffy in the public eye. I look at the Hannah Montanas and Britneys and LiLohans and "The Hills" chicks -- all these pretty and passive girls utterly controlled by parents, corporations or drugs. I sort of feel sorry that this is what teenage girls have to "aspire" to. Like aspects of "feminism" -- or at least the perception that women can be strong and smart -- has taken a step backwards since the progressive 70s or bitchtastic 80s.

Not least in Daytime where we have child-bride Lily craving to be the perfect 1950s mother & housewife: giving up work, concentrating on makin' babies, tending to the dream house that Cane brought for her. I'm not laying this at Khalil's feet since she herself is a working young actress now... but I wonder if sometimes the writers do not dare stray outside of what they believe is an actor's comfort zone. CK married exceptionally young and maybe the writers have made assumptions about that and the sort of character she might want to play. Kind of like the way they portray JT and Vamptoria as essentially extensions of the actors themselves and their RL romance.

For someone that was thankfully dead, she gets more airtime than half the cast. Sabrina, Sabrina, Sabrina... why mention something that was a disaster? Same thing with the freakin' chipmunk...

    • Well, Josh was a horndog. LOL Yep. It was one of the first really weird things Reva did with her PPD. She became obsessed with the idea that Dylan and Sam should get married. Sam was only 17, and needed her parent's permission. Reva helped them leave town so they could go to a neighboring state where Sam was old enough. Ross, Billy and Josh stopped them, then Sam went to India to try and persaude Justin. Reva followed her and didn't tell Josh she was going. While Reva was gone, Josh advertised for nannies, and Harley applied. He ended up hiring someone else. But when Reva returned, she hired Harley because (in her weird mental state) she wanted someone she could trust with the kids (because she feared Josh was trying to get rid of her and that Vanessa wanted the children.). After Reva starts treatment, she asks Harley to stay until she's stronger because she's good with the kids. At the party, Reva starts going off the rails, insulting Justin and Josh hauls her to a private dining room to ask WTF. Reva starts confronting him about the "affair" with Vanessa, and he realizes she is weird. He locks her in the dining room and frees Mindy and Van from the ladies room (where Reva has locked them in). Van starts telling him that Reva attacked her and needs help.  Reva escapes out the window of the dining room and goes back to the party, climbs onto a table and starts a striptease. Josh gets her to stop, takes her home and after filling Ed in, decides to go to the doctor the next day. Reva then takes off and spends days running around town, coming on to a guy she thinks is Billy, Billy, Hamp, Frank and Roger.  Roger takes her to his apartment and takes nude pictures of her, which he tries to blackmail Billy with. He wants the deed to the land the Towers is on in exchange for them. (Billy had been left the deed by a sweet old lady who lost her home in the 5th street fire. Roger had stolen the deed from her before she died. After Roger took those pics of Reva, she saw him hide them, and took an envelope from the hiding place. She didn't realize she'd taken the deed and not the pictures.)  Anyway, Billy and Vanessa trick Roger into burning the pictures, claim the deed and at the Towers opening reveal that Billy owns the land and therefore the Towers. That's what led to Roger and Alex's breakup and Roger and Mindy's affair.
    • All the time they spent trying to make viewers feel sorry for Chad only for him to not even last that long. I wonder if they knew Richard Burgi was going so quickly. You're right about Josie replacing Cheryl. On paper, this should have made sense, given all the ties Josie had to the canvas, but I did prefer Cheryl. There was something very synthetic about Alexandra Wilson.  I suppose even if she did have some fans they were just so used to getting rid of people left and right, so she was more collateral damage. As you said above I do wonder what the plans were for Peggy Lazarus. I think AWHP mentioned her once telling Peter that Peggy Lazarus wasn't her real name. Maybe she would have been another Carl moll... Rebecca Hollen never did get her due in her soap roles.
    • So true...Hackney might have had a story on FC with Richard being an old lover of his, but reveals herself to be a Cartel member and blackmails Richard with something into doing her dirty work  LOL. But of course Richard had his hands full with the double trouble sisters Ms. Jones and Ms. Braxton that season.

    • Cat herself will be a stumbling block all her own as she vowed to Chad to stay away from him, thus redeeming her of her crime morally. Classic DAYS would have them gazing longingly at each other at Doug's Place or Blondie's, while Liz is serenading the room with a song aptly chosen to represent their feelings of emotional turmoil.
    • From what I just recently watched, they were setting her up to go into future stories. She was Emmy nomination worthy in the material I saw. If some viewers did not like her, the character could have been rehabilitated after that sick storyline. It feels like they destroyed a character for fun and then tossed her to the curb. Spencer had chemistry with everyone. I'm just retroactively angry on Spencer's behalf.  You're right about how Cheryl was often forgotten and pushed aside and I would take Cheryl over Josie. I think soaps need characters like Cheryl. Characters like Josie are way too common. Josie always got on my nerves.
    • CBS was back in third place in 1994/95. That was the season CBS lost NFL broadcasting rights which also cost them several established affiliates in major media markets. 1995 CBS was sold to Westinghouse and Les Moonves arrived. 1995/96 CBS was trying to be young and cool to compete with NBC and Fox, but it was an epic failure and CBS was once again in third place.
    • I tend to think that Chad will actually listen to Jen (this time). And that will be the next stumbling block in their relationship, which will open the possibilities for Cat to seek another member of their love triangle... To iterate my earlier thought, I am also not a fan of the person Melissa Reeves, but the character of Jennifer looks so chic this week, especially in comparison to Hope (and Gabi).  That blunt haircut is a winner.
    • I think Cheryl was essentially replaced by Josie, and it seems likely that Lemay wanted to bring the Frames back into the picture and for a variety of reasons that it would be McKinnons who would make way for them. Cheryl didn't really get many layers -- she was pretty and kind and sweet and faded into the background so that Scott could participate in the AIDS storyline with Dawn. Looking at the AWHP, other than (not very) shockingly being in love with her mother's adopted son Scott, Cheryl apparently went out with Sam and flirted with much-too-old-for-her John Hudson and MJ's ex-boyfriend/pimp Chad. I know MJ told Mary that she had been a prostitute, but did she tell Cheryl and did she tell anyone about Chad's pimping?
    • I feel the same way about Melissa Reeves' Jennifer. She just makes the show feel like home by her presence alone. I am perfectly okay with them coming in every once and awhile, which probably fits Reeves' schedule better anyway. Their connections to Salem are still there: JJ, the grandkids, Jack still owning half of The Spectator ... they're perfect recurring characters. All this talk of Jennifer being in the wrong regarding Cat is absurd. Jennifer is not being villainized in any way, shape, or form, she's just being allowed to actually be human, which adds odds to the obstacle of Chad and Cat eventually getting together. All inner conflict. Keep it coming!
    • Hahaha. Jean Hackney, Angelica Nero, and the Falcon Crest henchwomen were all straight out of a James Bond movie.
