People will never be too busy to be entertained.

If you have little and grown boys playing World of Warcraft 365 days of the year like their lives depended on it, you can have little and grown girls watching soap operas. Especially now when everyone wants to escape from their struggles because of the recession.

People don't watch anymore because the stories suck. It angers me that TPTB continue to point all the blame on everyone else but themselves.

Go back to the [!@#$%^&*] drawing board and you'll find your viewers again.

Yeah, I don't think the PP I've seen so far on soaps have been all that natural. However, I think soaps do need to take advantage of product placement. Coke signs and paper cups at Kelly's (GH) or have one of the characters ask another out on a date to see (insert date movie title) type stuff. I really believe it needs to happen for soaps to survive , but they need to learn how to make it more seamless than it has been in the past. I'm sure that's hard though because of pressure from the advertisers involved.

They're counting them...at least on the legal streams and soapnet...but they haven't fully figured out how to monetize them.

I think I see where it is headed.

Yesterday, Roger Newcomb had a link to the latest bit about cable companies METERING internet usage. So, my monthly cable bill will be related to how much uploading and downloading I do.

Once we meter downloads, we're counting consumption.

Then, like they do with VHS blank tape sales, and so forth, a PORTION of that revenue can go back to the studios in whatever way they do that.

I saw that bandwidth article.

http://www.broadcastingcable.com/article/2...g_Is_Coming.php

Time Warner did try to explain that, but most people don't buy it, because they haven't said anything beyond, "The Internet is going to run out because of greedy people, so pay us money." It was a member of Congress who stopped Time Warner's plans, for now. If Time Warner can't even explain to him, then apparently the plan has some big flaws.

Monetize WHAT dude?! They already have figured out how to make money from legal streams and SOAPnet. If these shows weren't making money online, the networks wouldn't put them on different platforms and pimp them the way they do, especially Y&R which is pretty much on every flash site but xTube.

The WGA and other unions ended up getting their arm Ike Turner twisted into settling for this crappy 14-day free promotion crap. The networks and studios are making money from this. And they are making money in a way where they could decide how many views a show is getting and divide that amongst everyone. They just want a head start in screwing the talent over, the exact same way talent got screwed during the home movie market boom(which caused the six month 1988 strike).

After all, there are ads there every time we watch legal streaming content. So networks are "monetizing." They are just saying that to save face and to make the general public and union members with a sense of naivete believe that it's still "a new technology that we're not making money from"

And I am SURE they know how many people are watching their shows online. YouTube even has viewcounts at the bottom of their page. The networks are making money, even if it is a small amount.

And you will still have internet/tech geeks who will want to play WOW and other games at a certain speed without being charged over $1000 a month for it. The free market reigns. There's no way an internet company will stay in business if they charge by the amount of uploading and downloading someone does, like an electric bill or water bill. That's like charging someone for the amount of cable TV they watch.

But, per usual, I've digressed.

Well, let's talk about something, anything but the DAMN swine flu.

    • That's what Julie Hanan Carruthers is doing for BTG at the new studio in Atlanta, but JHC is credited.
    • I remember when the whole Missy Reeves controversy started in 2012.  She tweeted support of a business that had made homophobic statements. Greg Rikaart (who was on Y&R back then) publicly called her out on it, but was willing to reach out and speak with her. Article here: https://greginhollywood.com/greg-rikaart-talks-about-his-twitter-war-with-fellow-soap-star-melissa-reeves-over-anti-gay-chick-fil-a-73139 That being said, ten years later, on DAYS, in 2022, when they had they double wedding of Leo/CraigWesley and Gwen/Xander, Jack and Jennifer came to the wedding.  At that time, Missy Reeves was only intermittently available for DAYS. Jennifer was living "in Boston" and Cady McClain and Missy were each intermittently appearing as Jennifer, on the specific occasions when the show required a Jennifer to appear. Missy wasn't on contract and she could have said no. But she chose to appear as Jennifer for the gay wedding of Greg Rikaart's character.   So... I mean... I would assume they reached a détente behind-the-scenes. Missy still has her belief system but there's that.
    • That was one of the best grandslam finals.  Alcaraz comes all the way back down 2 sets to 0, and three match points in the 3rd set, to win it in a 5th set tie-break.  And the quality of play was excellent - so many great shots.  What a battle!
    • Indeed. I may try to watch it in full sometime, but not anytime soon... Mark played Sean Baxter for a few episodes when Courtney married Andy. Burke was either on Broadway or at OLTL at that time, I suppose.
    • Well, Josh was a horndog. LOL Yep. It was one of the first really weird things Reva did with her PPD. She became obsessed with the idea that Dylan and Sam should get married. Sam was only 17, and needed her parent's permission. Reva helped them leave town so they could go to a neighboring state where Sam was old enough. Ross, Billy and Josh stopped them, then Sam went to India to try and persaude Justin. Reva followed her and didn't tell Josh she was going. While Reva was gone, Josh advertised for nannies, and Harley applied. He ended up hiring someone else. But when Reva returned, she hired Harley because (in her weird mental state) she wanted someone she could trust with the kids (because she feared Josh was trying to get rid of her and that Vanessa wanted the children.). After Reva starts treatment, she asks Harley to stay until she's stronger because she's good with the kids. At the party, Reva starts going off the rails, insulting Justin and Josh hauls her to a private dining room to ask WTF. Reva starts confronting him about the "affair" with Vanessa, and he realizes she is weird. He locks her in the dining room and frees Mindy and Van from the ladies room (where Reva has locked them in). Van starts telling him that Reva attacked her and needs help.  Reva escapes out the window of the dining room and goes back to the party, climbs onto a table and starts a striptease. Josh gets her to stop, takes her home and after filling Ed in, decides to go to the doctor the next day. Reva then takes off and spends days running around town, coming on to a guy she thinks is Billy, Billy, Hamp, Frank and Roger.  Roger takes her to his apartment and takes nude pictures of her, which he tries to blackmail Billy with. He wants the deed to the land the Towers is on in exchange for them. (Billy had been left the deed by a sweet old lady who lost her home in the 5th street fire. Roger had stolen the deed from her before she died. After Roger took those pics of Reva, she saw him hide them, and took an envelope from the hiding place. She didn't realize she'd taken the deed and not the pictures.)  Anyway, Billy and Vanessa trick Roger into burning the pictures, claim the deed and at the Towers opening reveal that Billy owns the land and therefore the Towers. That's what led to Roger and Alex's breakup and Roger and Mindy's affair. Mark Lewis was on ATWT? 1986 is not a good year, storywise. No bueno. Muy no bueno.
    • All the time they spent trying to make viewers feel sorry for Chad only for him to not even last that long. I wonder if they knew Richard Burgi was going so quickly. You're right about Josie replacing Cheryl. On paper, this should have made sense, given all the ties Josie had to the canvas, but I did prefer Cheryl. There was something very synthetic about Alexandra Wilson.  I suppose even if she did have some fans they were just so used to getting rid of people left and right, so she was more collateral damage. As you said above I do wonder what the plans were for Peggy Lazarus. I think AWHP mentioned her once telling Peter that Peggy Lazarus wasn't her real name. Maybe she would have been another Carl moll... Rebecca Hollen never did get her due in her soap roles.
    • So true...Hackney might have had a story on FC with Richard being an old lover of his, but reveals herself to be a Cartel member and blackmails Richard with something into doing her dirty work  LOL. But of course Richard had his hands full with the double trouble sisters Ms. Jones and Ms. Braxton that season.

    • Cat herself will be a stumbling block all her own as she vowed to Chad to stay away from him, thus redeeming her of her crime morally. Classic DAYS would have them gazing longingly at each other at Doug's Place or Blondie's, while Liz is serenading the room with a song aptly chosen to represent their feelings of emotional turmoil.
    • From what I just recently watched, they were setting her up to go into future stories. She was Emmy nomination worthy in the material I saw. If some viewers did not like her, the character could have been rehabilitated after that sick storyline. It feels like they destroyed a character for fun and then tossed her to the curb. Spencer had chemistry with everyone. I'm just retroactively angry on Spencer's behalf.  You're right about how Cheryl was often forgotten and pushed aside and I would take Cheryl over Josie. I think soaps need characters like Cheryl. Characters like Josie are way too common. Josie always got on my nerves.
    • CBS was back in third place in 1994/95. That was the season CBS lost NFL broadcasting rights which also cost them several established affiliates in major media markets. 1995 CBS was sold to Westinghouse and Les Moonves arrived. 1995/96 CBS was trying to be young and cool to compete with NBC and Fox, but it was an epic failure and CBS was once again in third place.
