I felt physically sick when I saw her ugly video. Not your post - I had seen the video earlier. We aren't ever coming back from this. I don't know if I have ever felt such shame in this country. Yes, America has done bad things, terrible things, I'm not going to say this is new, but the crassness of these people just brings home how hollowed out we are now. Jaundiced JD can try as many righteous tantrums as he wants, this is all just one long grifting gut punch after another.

This is great news. It does make me surer they are going to rig any future elections - Arizona's Secretary of State is saying the same, and he has access we don't. So any wins Democrats have in close races now are going to have to be even stronger.

One unexpected bonus of the PA state senate win is that it likely spooked Trump's puppeteers (not him as he seems completely gone) about their House majority, leading them to yank the UN nomination away from hatchetwoman Elise Stefanik. She completely changed her views and appearance to get into the cult, and she still got a foot in the backside. According to Axios she was devastated and pleading with Trump. Maybe he'll do her a favor and let her get a free drink at Maralago.

French far-right leader Marine Le Pen barred from running for public office for five years

  • Marine Le Pen has been barred from running for public office for five years, meaning she would not be able to run in the 2027 French presidential election

  • She was found guilty of embezzling European funds to finance her French far-right National Rally (RN) party

  • Le Pen left the courtroom as the judge handed down details of the sentence

  • She has also been given a four-year prison sentence - but two years are suspended, and two years will likely be spent with a tag, rather than in custody

I am not defending Le Pen by any means, but do we really think prosecuting her is going to end any of this.

i think I am closer to the belief that not addressing peoples real concerns is something so many of these leaders have ignored. I can't speak for the French or other European countries, but part of the problem here is just that. Of course that's not all it is, it's also a lot of propaganda and ignorance on the part of the population.

The Nazis did the same thing in the 1930s, they played to the population's economic insecurities and then manufactured the scapegoat to be the Jewish people.

Le Pen and Musk are no different.  They manufacture scapegoats in order to get followers.

This has nothing to do with the problems of the working class.

Unsurprisingly, Elon Musk and former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro have just issued statements of outrage at the outcome of Marien Le Pen's legal case.

Oh I realize all that.  And I am no fan of Le Pen and I agree with all of this. My question is more about prosecuting Le Pen as if she alone is the problem.  I do worry for Europe by the way. France in particular.  And I fear Germany is getting one last shot before people get more frustrated and go all AfP. I hope not. But I think we're dealing in times with many problems not easy to solve. And I wonder if we have anyone who wants to solve problems. Canada if Carney becomes permanent PM is a glimmer of hope.  I've stayed away from so much of the news, I'm not up to date on so many things.
