It's a stupid move on Garland's part re: the old norms of the institution closing ranks regardless of conduct or past behavior because of longstanding protocol vs. context. It's a mistake.

This is exactly what I saw some worrying about when Garland was chosen for this position. Biden having to then come out and say he doesn't agree just gives the impression that no one in charge.

I'm starting to lose faith that anything will happen to these people. We're celebrating the retrieval of pipeline ransom money(well that is good work) but the failures of the FBI, DHS, Dept of Defense and others still whitewashed while a private company is helped.. And that senate committee report issued had to be scrubbed to get bipartisan support and have the word "insurrection" removed. 

 

I mistakenly thought Garland was a good choice. I thought the democrats might finally tell the GOP to get *ucked.  I get the importance of Biden's trip to the G7 and Harris's mission in Central America, but there needs to be a heck of a lot more focus on the health or lack of what's going on here. Why on earth isn't the DOJ stepping in in some capacity to defend voting rights and the nonsense going on in Arizona. There can't be NOTHING they can do.

Nothing of any major consequence is going to happen to Trump or any of the high officials who were involved in the insurrection. The ones that end up leaving office often end up in the  business world making seven or eight figure salaries in some sort of made up position. The few rubes that have been convicted by a lower court will simply be pardoned by the next Republican president (Donald Trump). That Republican president will use the DOJ to go after political rivals whether they are private citizens or not and the "but the Biden and Garland didn't do it" crowd will be yelling that out to no avail.

I'll just say this: the framing of this as the "Biden DOJ" is a red flag that the person writing this is not acting in good faith. Trump is a private citizen now. The DOJ shouldn't be involved in his defamation case. It looks to me like Garland is trying to shut down the involvement of the DOJ because making the US government the defendants pretty much ends the case. Then Carroll can go after Trump as a private citizen.

Trump is never going to jail IMO, but I never thought he was. I do think there will be a House committee on 1/6 which will be more effective than whatever weak tea compromise the Senate would've slapped together to appease McConnell.

 

DOJ isn't the most effective agent for voting rights. The best we can do to protect voting rights starts with passing something - that's what the next month or two is going to be all about. And I think an expanded VRA likely will pass soon, and that will be very good. But leaving it all up to DOJ and executive orders isn't going to do it.

 

As for something I really don't like, if separating Trump from DOJ so he can be prosecuted as a citizen is the angle then DOJ needs to make it clear, IMO. Because right now it looks and feels to a lot of people like the DOJ choosing to simply uphold the old norms and institutional mores, protect the outgoing admin like it was any other and 'move on' as opposed to taking the situation on the individual merits, which is flashbacks to a lot of Bush/Cheney hangover stuff. That's not more #bothsides ammunition anyone needs this month.

They can't do that. They can't come out and say "we're taking this action because we think it will make it easier for Carroll to get him another way." That's exactly the kind of thing Barr would've done. That makes it political.

I'm not naive enough to think Trump is going to prison. Nixon didn't. Yes he was pardoned but he never would have anyway. But there are a lot of other people including Barr and others who should be investigated along with a lot of other people in or were in our own gvmt.

The case with the DOJ taking up/continuing Trump's defense is less problematic IMO than other things like refuting the lawsuits by the protesters in Lafayette Square. What kind of nonsense is that.

Whenever people talk about Trump going to prison I always ask how they think he'd get there. Aside from the fact that putting a former president on trial would be a terrible precedent, (y'all seriously think Repubs wouldn't trump up some charges against Clinton, Obama, or any other Democrat?) how do people think a trial would work? Where would the trial take place? What kind of security do they think the judge and prosecutors would need? Imagine being a juror? That's a death sentence or at least it would ruin a decent person's life. I've done jury duty and I consider it an obligation and necessity but I wouldn't serve on this jury for anything under the sun.

Do you think that the only way he'll see any prosecution is with the NYC people and his business dealings? Or will he wiggle his way out again?

 

We'll never again have any peace in this country until that orange beast is dead - and maybe not even then. P.S. I want to throw shoes through the TV every time Joe Manchin is on. He's a sniveling coward, along with nearly the entire Republican Party. They all make me sick. There is no justice in this country anymore.

Not one reporter has asked Manchin why he supported THE EXACT BILL in 2019 - HR 1 - he was a senate co-sponsor and it then had NO GOP co-sponsors. Not one.
