That was time when NBC (Fred Silverman) were ordering shows and throwing them on the air seemingly at random.

There were almost weekly schedule changes.Nothing from that time was a hit.Think Supertrain,Harris&C0, Cliffhangers,Little Women,Turnabout, etc

Gerald Gordon seemed determined to have primetime success. He mentions his ambitions in several interviews. The best he could muster was that killer ant movie on ABC and that flop sitcom...Wonder how he dealt with that?

That ant movie was so ridiculous - but then that was when everybody wanted to be another Irwin Allen. LOL GG did do a number of primetime gigs through the 80s into the early 90s - Knight Rider, One Day at a Time, Highway to Heaven, Baywatch, Perfect Strangers, The Hogan Family, L&O - but those were episodics, not a star-making vehicle. The actress playing his daughter on Baywatch was played by a young virtual unknown named Mariska Hargitay.

Haven't watched in a couple of weeks because I've been catching up on my other backlogged shows, lol. I've watched through Feb. 69. But I did tape and tonight watched GG's episode of Knight Rider. It was hard to get Nick Bellini out of my head, though! biggrin.png Add to it that Michael Fairman was on it, and I was thinking of his RH character, Nick Szabo!

I DVR'ed the Knight Rider episode myself. Did you record it off Cozi TV, too? There were two other soap names in that episode - Catherine Mary Stewart (Kayla Brady #1, DAYS) playing GG's daughter, and off course the Hoff himself, a Y&R alum. Michael Fairman was on Y&R himself a few years ago - but then, what show HASN'T he been on? Ever seen his imdb page? Wow!!!

Check your PMs because there's something I think you'd like to see. Always fun to hear your thoughts.

So all of the elements were in place at GH.Popular actor that TPTB were behind, major storyline, playing a similar character to the one that brought him success, yet Mark Dante didn't have anywhere the same impact of Nick Bellini.

Maybe it was lacklustre co-stars,poorer writing and the fact that Mark just reminded viewers of Nick and didn't measure up ...

    • One of the dumbest situations (Lando) ever. What audience member is going to invest in a storyline with a recast they don't like and a triangle where one character is short-term? It bombed as it should have done. So much of JFP's tenure just reeks of desperation. I don't get how someone could produce SB (which did have flaws but was often brilliant) but make so many terrible mistakes at GL.   I still think JFP would have worked better as a director and music supervisor. Her music work at SB was top notch.

    • We see the same with GH, where Mark Teschner, the casting director, reportedly has less say since Frank Valentini took over. Some producers want to take over every aspect of their shows.  I think Lando may have been a CBS push.
    • No idea but she won Emmys & she was the Casting Director at the same time for both ATWT & GL. She hired Lisa Brown with no job for her. Then Marland made Brown his muse so he created both Iva & Nola for her. But, I think we know that Jill does what Jill wants.
    • I did notice a decline in the quality of the performers being cast once Betty R vacated/retired from her position. We would have been spared from the nightmares of some of the castings that dominated the show in the last decade or so of the soap. JFP was an example of someone, no matter the gender, who had no business being in the position they were in.
    • If Betty Rea was the casting director, why was so much of GL during JFP's reign cast by her? Walker, Deas, Crampton, Lando, etc. JFP takes credit for Dusay as well. What is the point of having a casting director, if you don't let her do her job? What happened when Rea left?
    • So much on here slips my mind but this is the first I remember hearing of Peterson's passing. Very sad. Nell was a thankless role, clearly set up for a cheating storyline with Frank, but Peterson did her best.  Betty Rea Rea was the casting director for the soap opera “Guiding Light” from 1970 to 1996 and simultaneously the casting director for “As the World Turns” from 1979 to 1983.
    • Sorry, just one more post on the Thorntons. How did Ruth and Edna feel about each other prior to Tad dating Dotty?
    • I can't remember exactly but I think it may be 1995 as Jake was trying to hide from a loan shark.
