Writer's Strike Thread

Honestly I can't see soaps doing any better in later timeslots, I lived in a place where GH aired at 4 pm and sufficive to say, it didn't last long in that timeslot......

We have another eight weeks to find out what happens. There's typically an eight week lag between when the show is written to when it is aired, so we have no idea how long this strike will last. It could last a few weeks, or it could last a few months.

Instead of thinking of the worst (even though some people love thinking about how horrible things can turn out and imagine every thing that can go wrong because it's their life's mission to fret and worry about things out of their control), just remember that soaps aside, the BIG TIME PRIMETIME/HOLLYWOOD writers are being affected by this, which means BIG TIME PRIMETIME/HOLLYWOOD PRODUCERS are going to be affected by this as well.

As capitalistic as the television/motion picture industry has become, I doubt this will last very long. I predict we will see scab written soap material air, if at all, very briefly, but then things will resume to normal.

WORD Sin, ITA :)

I have a question...

Does anyone know why the WGA is split into WGA West and WGA East? Other unions, such as SAG, aren't split into any specific coastal area, and many actors do reside in both the East and West.

Another thing. I don't know if this was corrected before, but someone mentioned that the dvd and internet provisions of these contracts don't affect soaps. That's just not true. Suppose a dvd were to be released, in the tradition of vhs collectibles like "Reva Shayne: the Scarlet Years" or ABC's "Greatest Weddings" compilation. That's potential revenue the writers want access to. With the "L.A. Diaries" collaboration between Y&R and ATWT, there's another chance to get paid. And there are plenty of ads being sold to maintain the internet airing of CBS soaps online. Ch-ching.

I wonder if Jean Passanante could be snatched off the picket lines and taken to a spa that does aging experiments...

 Now, that she is in the picket lines...fire hire! Dont bring her back....lock the door at the ATWT studios. Here's your chance CBS!! :D

some of the cast of Greys Anatomy were out there as well today

I just read that Chandra Wilson brought water to those who were striking outside their studio. That is also the same studio that GH films at. GA films next door to GH.

The Office had to stop production today. Several actors picketed while Steve Carrell and Rain Wilson didn't come into work.

That's because lots of actors are also SAG members. They didn't want to cross the picket line.

No one is doubting that at all...but why not speculate? Why not be concerned? Why even talk on a message board?

Well I've been known to eat crow before.

You mean WGA members? Yeah. I know that.

I also don't think this will last at all as long as people seem to expect.

At this point, firing Jean Passanante (or any other HW) is no longer an option. If PGP did, they would be in violation of WGA policy, leaving themselves open to a ginormous lawsuit.

Nor can they fire her once the strike is over, unless they have a damn good reason to. (And no, low ratings/supporting the strike really wouldn't cover it.) Same goes for pretty much all the current HW's.

At the very least, all the HW's could report back to work after the strike ends, and then, down the road, some of them could be replaced. But who knows how long that could be, or what we'd have to put up with in the meantime.

You see? Another important reason why this strike has to last long enough to justify cancelling all the soaps. The last thing these hacks need is job security.

Is so stupid that these hack writers of daytime are wanting more. When they can't write [!@#$%^&*]!! I say get temporary writers....that can write and demote the hacks in charge like Pissant.

Well, TVShowsOnDVD.com said Night S**t (not a typo on my part), per ABC, is coming to DVD next year, so yeah, I guess this would apply to soaps, as well.

Yeah I understand that, but are these writers wanting residuals for stuff they did NOT write then?

I mean something like a Luke and Laura compelation, would any of these writer's be entitled to residuals from something like that???

But the daytime writers have to strike. They have to because they have to support their fellow writers and many daytime writers have written for primetime or will eventually.

Its the same thing with the actors, and I think their contract expires in May or something.
