I think there's an argument to be made that Hill Street Blues integrated certain soap elements in a way most primetime dramas hadn't before.

I think Sisters mostly existed in its own corner rather than feeling like it was true to any network.

Yes, that made me roll my eyes. I noticed she didn't say that about Paper Dolls. The idea is that if a show is good, it's not a soap.

I prefer the term “serial.” Knots and Dallas, after the first seasons, were fully serialized. Hill St, St. Elsewhere, and LA Law were hybrids: they had serialized story elements that would continue for a limited number of episodes, but they generally had a couple of self-contained stories per episode as well.

20 URBAN LEGENDS of the Supersoaps

1. WAS LINDA EVANS THE FIRST CANDIDATE TO PLAY PAMELA EWING ON “DALLAS”?

Legend Status: Untrue

2. WAS A DALLAS-DYNASTY CROSSOVER EVER PLANNED?

The networks had to use a lot of fake stories (more or less leaked to trashy mags and papers) as an attempt at getting the viewers interested in those shows again. One of the most over-the-top articles had "Dallas"´ J.R. wheeling and dealing with the Queen of "Dynasty" herself, Alexis. Though the two shows were aired by competitor networks and produced by different companies (Spelling and Lorimar), there seemed to be an intention out there to make a crossover and unite these two parallel worlds, even for a brief storyline, though it was never confirmed or denied by TPTB.

Legend Status: Untrue (but funny to think about!)

5. WAS PAMELA SUE MARTIN TEMPTED TO RETURN TO “DYNASTY” AFTER SHE LEFT?

Even after re-casting the role, Spelling wanted Martin back. First, the Shapiros wanted her and Jeff to run a hotel (but Spelling had the rights over the adaptation of Arthur Hailey´s "Hotel", and they sued him: eventually they settled, and this idea was dropped). When they were working on the "Dynasty" spin-off, "The Colbys", they tried to lure her again, unsuccessfully.

8. WAS “KNOTS LANDING” AN ADAPTATION OF INGMAR BERGMAN´S “SCENES FROM A MARRIAGE”?

Jacobs defined his initial idea for the show as "Scenes from a Marriage Times Four", a "dramatic exploration of the way people related in the post-sexual revolution world and how they kept their marriages together if they could". On the other side, Michael Filerman wanted to emphasize the soapy, lighter side.  The Jacobs-Filerman creative duo usually explain very cordially that [..] one wanted "to produce art" and the other wanted "to create trash".

15. DID JOAN COLLINS REFUSE TO APPEAR IN “THE COLBYS”?

Collins wrote in her autobiography "Passion for Life":"The producers were extremely anxious for me to guest-star in "The Colbys" but I refused

19. IS TRUE THAT SUSAN SULLIVAN SUGGESTED HER CHARACTER SHOULD FALL IN LOVE WITH RICHARD ON "FALCON CREST"?

At the time, tabloids published that Robert Foxworth and Sullivan coudn´t stand each other because of her obsession with perfection, and they even hinted that the blossoming affair with Richard was partly a way to keep them apart. The communicative, sparkly actress talked about her shorter new hairdo, her wish to do comedy, her exit from "Falcon Crest" and also, about how Maggie´s relationship with her brother-in-law started. She said that, although actors didn´t have too much input in the plots per se, writers did listen to their suggestions and ideas. It was Susan herself who told them to investigate the undeniable chemistry that she and Richard Channing (David Selby) had on screen.

@Khan - I thought some of these answers would intrigue you based on recent postings

Blog 259 Streaming Classic Soaps

effective Nov. 27, 2023

Many classic soaps are known to have episodes on tape, in warehouses, or other storage. Very likely they are not digitized. To be streamed they would have to be cataloged & digitized just to be streamed in chronological order. To market them by storyline, etc. would require more in editing & creating titles & segues, etc. This applies to most defunct daytime soaps including ABC/Disney and P&G. If anyone has any info about the ownership or whereabouts of any classic soaps, please pass the info along!

90210 the reboot. 5 seasons. Prime Video, CW & CWseed

ABC soaps: AMC, OLTL, RH, CITY, PC, LOV are owned by Disney & it's not known whether they would have any interest or not. AMC & OLTL were warehoused together & they lost 5 seasons each, also to a fire.

The RetroTV website lists cable outlets that carry it. Twice daily, midday & 6:30 & a block on weekends. Also they are removing the copyright credit line. Reason unknown. While most remember Norman Lear for ALL IN THE FAMILY and a slew of phenomenal sitcoms, Soap Opera Fans may remember these shows...
ALL THAT GLITTERS Featured familiar faces like Jessica Walter, Louise Shaffer, Gary Sandy, Lois Nettleton, Anita Gillette and Danny DeVito. In a television first, Linda Gray, appeared as the first transgender series regular on television, Linda Murkland -- a model! Of course, Linda soon became Sue Ellen Shepherd Ewing on DALLAS.
MARY HARTMAN, MARY HARTMAN Featured waxy yellow buildup and deadpan actress Louise Lasser. With a supporting cast of Greg Mullavey, Dody Goodman, Debralee Scott, Mary Kay Place and Graham Jarvis and a slew of zany supporting characters. MHMH was a precursor to SOAP, which spoofed daytime and was aired late night. Stories included The Fernwood Flasher (Mary's Father!!!!) and a series of bizarre murders...
FOREVER FERNWOOD The continuation of MHMH after Louise Lasser exited the show.
FERNWOOD 2-NIGHT and AMERICA 2-NIGHT Satire of talk shows featuring Martin Mull and Fred Willard as the hosts.
PALMERSTOWN, USA Less of a soap but more like THE WALTONS and LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE, PALMERSTOWN, U.S.A. told the story of two nine year old best friends in rural Palmerstown. One is white, the other is black. Featured Jonelle Allen, Bill Duke, and a young up and comer named Michael J. Fox.

    • There was a scene in the past week or two with Leslie looking at some papers and mementos, which included an invitation or souvenir from Alan's memorial service or funeral -- it was dated as November 2024. Me just guessing but it seems to me that Martin's nightmares about the accident are from something longer ago than November.
    • ah thanks! do you know who the third one was in the blonde? the fifth one i know ive seen before in the brown wig but i forgot, and then ive never seen the psychic one before lol
    • I felt for Ted early on but as the story unfolded it has changed my opinion on him. To know he was cheating while his wife was struggling to give him a baby is a lot to deal with. Plus, this happened ages ago and still he's paying Leslie off and threatening her to leave town.  What really caused me to lose him in this episode was how even though he was busted, he still refused to take responsibility and come clean and the way he talked to Martin and Eva was terrible. To tell Smitty he better get Martin away from him when that is his SON who he used to cover up his affair? That is true dog behavior. Ted seems upset he got caught but I'm not seeing the remorse I would need to want Nicole to forgive him. I'm curious how I'll feel after Ted gets to talk to Nicole but I need him to fix it with the rest of the family as well.
    • I'm sorry. I well remember Jake doing Doris but I have no independent memory of the story around it.  Krystle with a K Lake, sure, both Tony the Tuna stories & NOT.  And, Jake also impersonated a woman named Bunny Eberhardt but he didn't know she was a woman so there was no drag. This weekend I re-watched Kevin & Mac, GH, and my strong impression is exactly what it was when I watched it in real time: They did not let them look very pretty. Of course, I think the best ever drag on GH was Alexis posing as the Q butler.  In a different use of drag at AW one Halloween, Jensen Buchanan went as Charlie Chaplin & Judi Evans went as, I think, a male gypsy.

    • I'm not sure who wanted them to dump REUNION & instead do a "Dallas-like daytime show" but it seems that it def came from NBC to AW through Rauch, so, yes, it absolutely could have been his (cough-another-stupid?) decision!!!! I've just begun the new Lisanti book so maybe I will find out. (I waited for the kindle version to come out.) I would apologize for being so critical & so sarcastic, too, but, well, I'm not actually sorry!  Silverman was NOT a friend to AW.  And, I believe the critique is on point & deserved! I wanted to explain why I think the timing is off for the 90 minute show to be a reaction to the GH Luke & Laura story & its hype. Because, for sure, networks & production companies did react to it! The first 90 minute show was Monday, March 5, 1979.  And, there was some unknown amount of time ahead of that with people arguing about it & then, planning it.  The Luke & Laura wedding was mid-November 1981.  They were on the run from Frank Smith & stayed overnight in Wyndham's Dept. Store early August 1980.
    • terrible at using forums and inserting photos, but jake in another world had a drag persona named doris, anyone know the episode or year? http://www.anotherworldhomepage.com/ffad19.jpg
    • Yes, I am familiar with Fred Silverman. Agree, the 90 minute AW a very poor decision by Silverman. I think Silverman was behind the decision to go with Texas.
    • Thanks -- you're doing God's work The Gio reveal was everything I hoped for and more. GH got it right. Head to toe, GM is a stunning physical specimen.
    • I really wonder how they'll handle Netflix's usual long breaks between seasons. That girl is going to grow up fast... makes me wonder if this wouldn't have been a better fit for HBO Max considering they're leaning into a more broadcast style of production model with The Pitt.
    • I agree -- I didn't suspect Ted, either. I think a lot of people are giving themselves way too much credit in predicting Ted's problems

And can I have a different take on Ted here? Yes, he's made a huge mistake with this Leslie debacle, and yes, he has to suffer and pay for it. But does that make Ted a terrible human being? I don't think it does. He made a horrific mistake over 2 decades ago, and as far as we know, he's been a good husband and father since. As far as we know, he hasn't strayed or violated his marriage since. He didn't know that he fathered another child, and thought he "removed" Leslie from his life. I won't blame Nicole if she doesn't forgive him, but I also won't blame her if she decides what they have and what they've had more than makes up for what he did. Ted is getting dragged far more than Bill is on these boards, and I think Bill is MUCH worse as a husband and father. How many times did he cheat on Dani during their marriage? How many times did he do vile things in his role as fixer? How much did he hurt his daughters by screwing their friend and marrying her? With Keith Robinson coming in as Ted, maybe we'll see a character change in direction and we'll discover that Ted has many flaws and always had a dark side. For now, though, I'm inclined to both be angry with Ted for hurting his family while also sympathizing with him. I know what you mean, but I do think that was intentional. So much was going on in that episode, and I think they decided not to let Nicole's reaction be lost in all that. Nicole will get those scenes that you're asking for.
