Maybe someone should move this thread to the MyNetworkTV section, because this has more to do with those shows than daytime.

The *BIG* reason why MyNetworkTV didn't work MEIDEL is that these shows weren't even marketed properly. No one knew WHAT MyNetworkTV was, and a lot of people still don't.

I admit, FH and DESIRE weren't that great. But, WICKED WICKED GAMES and WATCH OVER ME were both soap masterpieces with excellent production values and really good acting(especially WWG and Tatum O'Neal).

Not if you promote the shows to diehard soap fanatics. Or, wait, how about promoting these shows at all!?

I hope the ratings register a 0HH after that. Without MyNetworkTV's all telenovela lineup, the network is pointless. But, you can't tell that to someone who doesn't like soaps to begin with.

With Meidel saying this, I'm not completely convinced the network will let AMERICAN HEIRESS and SAINTS & SINNERS run their full course. I think they will give up on them way earlier than their run.

Yep, 2007. The year that soaps died!

I love my soaps and the networks should take into consideration the fact that unlike MyNetworkTV (which was admittedly trash when I watched it) daytime soaps are staples. The problem is not the show itself - it's what's going on with each show. All My Children is constantly alienating its own viewers; One Life to Live hasn't had a solid identity since Michael Malone's first run; As the World Turns is generic soap at best; Bold and Beautiful is so fickle you can't keep up; Passions began its descent toward exploitation and trash years ago. GH and GL have some great moments mixed in with the good/mediocre, and powerhouse Y&R is starting to show serious signs of strain. Overhaul the shows! Bring back vets, fire the hack writers, treat the shows with some sort of dignity and respect! It's all thanks to the Powers that Be.

I think the problem that MyNetworkTV had was that they were trying to show a soap 5 days a week at NIGHT, and that is just something that does not work, 5 day a week soaps were meant for daytime, not primetime. That is why when Melrose Place and 90210 were on they were once a week not everyday, I am sure if they would have put them on everyday, they would have never lasted, same thing can be said about Dallas and Dynasty once a week which is all that a primetime soap should be on. Not to mention that there NEW soaps don't have millions of people that have been watching for 20 years or more as a start up base. I in no way shape or form view there problems at MyNetworkTV to the probelms that daytime has. Daytime's problem is storytelling, once upon a time daytime soaps all had great story tellers and storylines, and now alot of it is just throw whatever at the screen for a story and see if it sticks with the viewers. The only way daytime is going to fix its problems is to get back to storytelling and stop writing drivel for storylines.

People these days talk about "The Sopranos" like they used to talk about "GH" and "Dallas." That's where people are getting their soap fix these days. Even they aren't what we think of as "soaps," a lot of prime-time shows have done a good job at adapting soap conventions to primetime genres.

Showing soaps 4 or 5 days a week at night works very well in the UK. The top-rated shows are nighttime soaps there, with 4-6 episodes a week. MyNetworkTV just didn't promote itself or its telenovelas very well. I think a more established network could have a real hit with a 2- or 3-day a week nighttime soap. We see from a reality TV show like Big Brother or American Idol being on several days a week, also, that people can tune into a show for more than just one day a week at night.

Anyway it is NOT the beginning of the end for soaps. Jeff Zucker is clueless and just trying to justify his network's ineptness with daytime.

    • I don't, since they've clearly incorporated them into Tomas' storyline, and I happen to like his tattoos, but his jackets not fitting doesn't mean they're trying to cover his tattoos. The clothing overall isn't the issue; it's the fit. And I expect(ed) more from Jeresa Featherstone and her team. Very disappointed. He's the only male, overall, whose costume irritates me.
    • "And OMG, watching the scenes of Roger's return in comparison...the quality in the writing really nosedived. The stupid mask." Very much agreed.  Having Roger hide behind a mask for weeks/months, with it culminating with him swinging in on a vine at Blake/Phillip's wedding....geez.  So juvenile. IMO, Guiding Light never did a good job reintroducing major characters, either from the dead or elsewhere.  Masked balls = awful.  Amish = awful. When Reva was brought back from the dead, she should've just showed up in Springfield as Reva, and informed everyone that she had been gone for years because she felt like it.  She had a four-year fling with some dude who ended up dumping her due to disloyalty. Josh would be pissed and declare that their love is not *always* but *sometimes* and he'd act accordingly.  Her kids would hate her.
    • Agreed. The Emmys next year are gonna be a pretty tough competition and I hope we get a Days sweep lol  Not only does Deidre deserve a nomination for these last few weeks, but I also think Paul Telfer, Raven Bowens, Carson Boatman, Dan Feuerriegel and Alison Sweeney have good chances as well.
    • It’s not about a lack of faith and trust in MVJ, it’s about a a lack of faith and trust in Ron Carlivati, who I think can be very sneaky and manipulative when he wants to be.  And, all that “He’s just a breakdown writer” talk never changed my mind about anything, because at Days, it was “just a breakdown writer” that gave us some of the worst episodes I’ve ever seen.

    • I think they’re desperately trying to cover his awful tattoos. But anyway them being unable to style short kings properly has been a major pet peeve of mine for a while now.  I honestly don’t understand what some people expect from actors to even begin considering them for recognition. Let’s be real—awards mostly mean that an actor is respected by their peers and has some level of cultural relevance. Actual judgment on the acting itself? That’s often secondary—highly subjective and shaped by the times. I completely agree on both points. If you’re an actor or a dancer you shouldn’t get any tattoos (sorry not sorry). Tomas’ tattoos are ugly too. And regarding the couples- you’re completely right. These writers are unable to write romance.   Further comments: - Kat cannot be this dumb to keep tampering with evidence over and over again. And I’m officially not a fan of the actress—every time she’s in a scene with Leslie, she doesn’t seem intimidated at all. She plays it like comic relief, which is just too much, especially when paired with Leslie’s histrionics and over-the-top antics. Leslie is older, dangerous, and has literally been portrayed as homicidal—Kat should be at least a little scared. • I also didn’t like Kat playing damsel in distress with the hotel manager. It gave off the same weird energy as Dani with the cop. I would’ve much preferred the version Paul Raven suggested, with her sneaking in through housekeeping. • And yes, Dani again accused Hayley of faking the pregnancy—this time even specifying she might be using a pillow under her shirt. (No fake miscarriage being mentioned) I stand by my take: this is ridiculous writing. No one in the real world—except us, the chronically online soap watchers—would even think of such a conspiracy theory. Haley is no Beyoncé. • What in the world was Chelsea wearing in her hair the other day? And this whole thing with Madison is beyond cringe. Chelsea’s coming off as needy and toxic—basically like every other Dupree. • I’m glad the casino storyline is moving forward, but it’s still boring as hell. Honestly, I’d be so here for a plot twist where Vanessa and Doug take Joey out. • The direction and editing lately have been rough. Abrupt cuts, weird pacing… something just feels off overall. There’s a strange uneasiness to how it’s all coming together. • And finally: Tomas is too much of a saint. Where are the messy sluts when you need them? (Vanessa doesn’t count.)
