Wow, I wasn't aware of this. But it says it aired on the BBC so I have to think that RTD was aware of it, even though it would be unlike him not to mention his influences.
One thing that surprised me about the reaction to Sin in the US came from some gay critics, who felt that it was perpetuating a a dangerous stereotype by having the protagonist sleep around when he didn't know his HIV status (and indeed, probably suspected he was positive.) I do get that reaction, but I thought it just showed something that RTD is usually good at--the ambiguity of these characters. Because certainly, in a way, I could understand why it was done (and certainly it's something that DID happen) and that it wasn't done maliciously, trying to spread the virus. I guess it just made me think that there still are people who think all depictions of gay characters need to be full on positive even now.
Which has been a reaction I've seen from some about Tip Toe too. I admit, I didn't expect to find the finale quite as bleak and harrowing as it was--DESPITE the fact that we see what happens in the very first scene. But I also am kinda shocked by some comments I've seen by gay people, who seem to think this show will just give fuel to violent bigots because Leo makes some very stupid decisions, and has his own prejudices... Whereas, I think that's kinda the point (and certainly I disagree with anyone who weirdly thinks RTD was showing it was his own fault--HOW anyone can have that as their take away from the show is beyond me.) I've also seen a few older gay people (ok, two) on FB say that it just shows how you really should not flaunt your lifestyle, and then your neighbours will be fine with you even with their own prejudices...
